I am pretty appalled but not surprised that tweet got RTs from over 100+ people.

As for Tyler Clementi, his roommate Ravi's friends are defending him saying he had no 'intention' to 'spy' on Tyler but was really a 'concerned roommate' (The Daily Targum is practically playing spin control for Rutgers). Yeah let's ignore Ravi's now down twitter feed was updating his followers with a link to get a look at what Tyler was doing:

As to 50 Cent, I have no doubt whatsoever that he meant gays. None.

And as to the Rutger's situation, I just hope they follow through with the criminal proceedings.

Why does everyone assume that Tyler was targeted because he was gay ? What if that Ravi guy is just a perverted creep who would spy on Tyler even if he was with a woman ? And the timeline from that aolnews article does not support the idea that Tyler committed suicide because he ended up on webcam. After he saw Ravi's first tweet, he complained to the college officials (the question is why did not they do anything about it). Then he set up another date, during which he noticed that the webcam was on again. He committed suicide shortly after that.

The way I see it, a hate crime or a manslaughter would be pretty impossible to prove. Violation of privacy is probably the only charge that will stick.

No one has said they'll be actually charged with a hate crime. I think the violation of privacy will be enough. It's not gonna bring Tyler back. It's not gonna stop people from treating gay people like they aren't human. It's only going to martyr the two assh*les by people like Maggie Gallagher and every other rancid homophobe like her out there.

Even Ravi's idiot friends conceded Ravi's whole 'concern' was there was an alleged 'older', 'weird' man in the room with Tyler and Ravi's tweets implied it was in a sexual nature.

However, since I'm all about fairness - I think it should be pointed out that there's a young woman who helped Ravi and deserves a place along side him in the Douchebag Hall of Fame.

I wouldn't want to leave her out of the outrage. That would be descriminatory.

i happen to agree with the idea that the fact that it was a gay liaison is coincidental. i know, i know, but come on does anyone here really believe that the roommate would not have broadcast that no matter who it was in the room?

Excuses my ass! I love how friends of the two perpetrators say the two of them had friends who are gay, so they couldn't possibly have targeted the Tyler. Give me a break.

I'm not buying that Ravi was concerned for Tyler. Hello, his tweet which stated that he found out that his college roommate was gay knocks that one out. Gee, when you're concerned for a friend of yours don't you actually state your concern to them as opposed to taping such person on your webcam?!

This was a senseless and heinous crime and I'm truly saddened that Tyler decided to take his life.

Everything I've read makes it clear that yes, it was 100 percent because the incident involved two men.

That's what made it "funny."

well, i hope that the two perpetrators are punished as harshly as possible for this, but i don't agree that it's a hate crime. i reserve the right to change my mind on that, though.

what i really hope is people in power and celebrities use this tragedy as a moment to stand up and convey the message that no one should be ashamed of who they are. yes, i know there will be the usual posturing and calls for more limits on personal freedom, but i would just like to see some folks get up and, like the link from above, talk about how there is nothing wrong with being who you are and that there is nothing to be ashamed of. anger toward the people responsible is great, but only education and understanding can ever surmount the kind of ignorance that feeds this.

wouldn't it be a wonderful gesture for the presidnt to use this occasion as a springboard for an outright call for the end of dodt? to call for a repeal of doma? to state that when the country itself discriminates that it should come as no shock that its citizens do the same and that until such repeals were made he would veto any and all non-essential bills to emerge from the congress.

I may have missed something, but where in his tweets did Ravi say it was "funny" ? It may very well have been a hate crime, but I honestly haven't seen anything that would prove it.
