If you're doing an audition and your character has to talk on the phone at the end and reference the phone a lot (it's Catherine's monologue from Memory of Water) is it okay to bring in a cell phone or is it better to mime one?
mime, but actually HOLD the phone, don't do the "hang ten" thing
I don't recommend doing a monologue over the phone. It's better to have a monologue where you're talking to someone in the room (and then visualize them straight ahead of you in the back of the audience and deliver it that way). A phone locks you off a lot.
I've actually done a Catherine monologue from MoW as well... The one where she says she gives too much, and ends up saying she's lonely (the f-word can be removed if you need it to be). You really don't need a phone for that at all. You should look at it.
If you really want to do the monologue that involves the phone, I agree that you should mime holding a phone.
It's not that one. It's before it, at the beginning of the scene. It starts "ring ring ring, please God make him ring...."
For that one, I'd bring a cell phone.

i've heard to always bring the phone IF you are set on doing a monologue using a phone...
but i've heard its better to just not use "phone talking" monologues in general.
To clarify for those who don't know this monologue, I'm fairly certain that she talks AT the phone and ABOUT the phone... I don't think she talks to another person using the phone at that phone in the play. So it's not what you think when you read "telephone monologue". It's more a question of whether it's a good idea to bring a prop in general.
