"Eeeh, I go to Ah-MEEEEEE-riccaaa!”

Best part of TITANIC, by far. Love it.

I also love watching Mickey Rooney in BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S. It's so bad it's great.

I really don't understand why people think Van Dyke's cockney accent is distracting, I didn't find it distracting, it was more comic than anything. He was excellent. I am sure the English found it annoying but still Van Dyke's charm is wonderful!

I thought Gwyneth Paltrow's English accent in "Sliding Doors" was the worst!!

I don't know what they were thinking with the Mickey Rooney character in "Breakfast at Tiffany's". That character isn't even in the book. I think several people were smoking wacky weed when they made that decision and filmed it.

Hardly any of that movie is in the book.

I don't remember her having an accent. The only thing I remember about the movie was the gay guy. And a dog.

Good list! Adding my own nominations...

Leonardo DiCaprio in Blood Diamond.

Also, a lot of the Boston accents people go for in the movies end up sounding more like New York accents, or a way overdone "pahk the cah" accent.

Note to movies - not everyone in Boston has a thick accent, but if you're going to use it in a movie, at least get it right!

The cast of The Departed did a better job than most, though!

Hugh Grant in "Our Sons."Generic American accents almost always sound weird coming from British actors, but this one is uber bizarre. Julie Andrews was his mother, dammit. He could have kept his own accent.

Speaking of Boston accents, Robin Williams, although surrounded by Bostonians in Good Will Hunting, deigned to drop an R or two and expected us to accept that as an accurate dialect.

And won an Oscar.

i found Tom Hanks' Boston accent in Catch me if You Can to be very very distracting and almost comical at moments that shold have been serious. i didn't know if it was really BAD, it was just overblown, maybe.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Madonna's terrible british accent in that Guy Ritchie Movie No One Saw.....oh maybe that's why...

Oh and even though I didn't waste time or money on Pink Panther...isn't Martin's accent supposed to be comically over the top? Kinda like Cohen in Talledega Nights?

Or Barbra Streisand.

Do you know she is really British? That was her real speaking voice in the British scenes in "On A Clear Day. . . "

In all of her other films her Bklyn/NYC accent is a fake to make her more mainstream.

I don't get the Dick Van Dyke thing either. I've heard lots of Americans attempt a cockney accent, and his doesn't sound particularly bad to me. Oh well.

But yes...Leo in Blood Diamond. What the hell was that? Was it supposed to be Australian??

She's playing a French maid. In a very slutty French maid costume. Of course she needs the slutty French accent!

What was the movie where Brad Pitt did the Irish accent?

Leo's accent in Blood Diamond is quite good, imho. It's white South African. (Afrikaaner) It's a very hard accent to get, and his was pretty much spot-on.

But ABSteel, why is it that when she whispers to her killer right before she gets killed, the accent disappears? (yet it seems to return as she cries out "It's you!" before she gets strangled)

I've seen that movie WAY too many times, it seems.

Brad Pitt's "Irish" = Devil's Own.

I hate myself for knowing that so easily.

Leo in Blood Diamond. What the hell was that? Was it supposed to be Australian??

Actually, the Afrikaaner and Australian accents do sound remarkably similar. I work with a sumber of white South Africans, and when I first met them I was unsure of their background. I haven't seen Blood Diamond so I can't judge Leo's accent, but from your comment it would seem he did a pretty good job.
