The Balance of Straight Power in Musical Theatre
The Balance of Straight Power in Musical Theatre#0

Every few months or so a threads inevitably arises questioning the roots of the "more gay men are into musical theatre than straight men" stereotype. With such threads a fair amount of people chime in, either to explain the roots of this stereotype or to dispel it. It seems like it's generally a much bigger deal to the straight men than it is the gay men. I'm not interested in discussing the reasons why musical theatre is often perceived as a gay art (there are already several threads devoted to that). I'm curious to know why, if indeed musical theatre really is a place where gay men are in the majority, is it such a big deal to some.
Is it an issue for most straight men to be involved in something that others might perceive as "gay"? Is it more important to try and dispel that notion than to just simply accept that perhaps it is true?

Posted: 8/4/06 at 2:23pmI better thoroughly think about it before posting. Though I don't care for any stereotypes, I guess what really counts is whether you work with people who have a big creative output and if they happen to have any sexual orientation that's fine ( better than if they don't have any at all *lol*)

That's exactly my point, papa. Is it because one of the (if not the absolute) worst things a straight man can be accused of is being gay?
the balance of straight power in musical theatre#5
Posted: 8/4/06 at 2:28pmWell, I'd say it is because some still regard it as such. On the other hand, I'm sure that'll change with time passing.

Posted: 8/4/06 at 2:31pmi've never understood that, kringas. i just don't understand people who get upset when accused of being gay. if you're comfortable with who you are, who gives a sh*t what someone else thinks?

Papa, statements like that make me love you despite yourself.
Problem is...not many are as comfortable with themselves as they should be.

don't you guys also have a problem with people who are on "our" side, using homosexuality as a way to denigrate some politicians?

I agree...what's the big frickin' deal? If they're that uncomfortable with it, get another career.
YES, breeder boys, musical theatre is a totally stereotypical GAY arena of self-expression. YOU KNEW THAT WHEN YOU SIGNED UP FOR YOUR FIRST F*CKING SCHOOL MUSICAL.
I wouldn't try out for a football team and then whine about how it was so heterosexually slanted...
Shut up. JUST SHUT UP.

Posted: 8/4/06 at 2:41pmhow many "opinion makers" are there in musical theatre? this isn't about politicians or the media, it's about people who espouse a love for musical theatre who still feel the need to point out that even though they love musicals, they are not "that way" and who seem to display an certain level of discomfort being around people who are.

no, it's about being comfortable in your own skin for straight folks. and that has nothing whatsoever to do with politics.
jaily's right, this attitude of "omg, there are gay men" in theatre is just so ridiculously disingenuous it's pathetic. if you're that uncomfortable with the glbt community, get the f*** out of theatre.

I adore Randi Rhodes. She is fearless in her attacks on Bush and his failed administration, but many times I've heard her show her true colors when it comes to gay men. She uses the "gay" card to demonstrate weakness in certain politicians.
I once heard her say on the air "...I think you guys should have all the rights afforded to everyone but I don't want to know what goes on in your bedroom." The context of this comment was her reaction to Sam Seder reading a passage of a book that talked about two men kissing! Kissing!
