Yes, yes, I know, its cliche bulls**t, but I really think Lorne Michaels needs to step down at this point.
This is just plain desperation

Will anyone but those who read the SNL blog even know? I read the actual post and it didn't really sound all that desperate, nor did it say that any of these suggestions would lead to the host/musical guest. And Betty White's hosting gig was all the internet's doing, so it's not like it's even unprecedented.
SNL really can't win. When they keep things the way they are, they are accused of being a dinosaur. Then when they do something like this they're called desperate.

True, tiny, but The AV Club portion of their website is on the level.
And here's the thing on SNL's page

Yeah, the A.V. Club is actually legitimate reviews and news.
I think we'll see Ceiling Cat as the host, and Keyboard Cat as the musical guest.

Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" and Liza Minnelli
Liza Minnelli and A Tomato
Liza Minnelli and A Tomato
Liza Minnelli and A Tomato (Three Weeks Straight)

Posted: 9/17/12 at 11:02amConsidering that they let the audience pick the host for the first time back in the third season (Congrats, Miskel Spellman!) wouldn't you say 1977 was the beginning of the end?

Oh and remember they had the call in campaign whether or not to cook the lobster? I think they ended up letting it go.

There was also the phone-in poll over whether to permanently ban Andy Kaufman. They voted yes.

Posted: 9/17/12 at 1:39pmAs long as they don't add a blonde precocious 6 year old cousin to the cast, I think they're ok for a while.

Having public opinion be the backbone of your curating and creative drives is the death of imagination. Imagination is SNL's spine. The philosophy of it irks me.
And watching "internet sensation" Karmin was exactly like watching Up With People do gangsta rap. I was slack-jawed.

Where do you get the impression that this is going to be the backbone of how they get their guests?

Posted: 9/17/12 at 10:16pmThey , for the most part get their guests as part of promotional tours. Notice most guests have movies or TV shows that are popular. Occasionally they will snag a sports star. Someone pointed out to me you can guess the next musical guest by the CDs they are selling at Starbucks.

Posted: 9/17/12 at 10:19pmI was under the impression that the last couple of seasons featured a considerable amount of guests who knew the some of the cast really well beforehand or there was a cast member who were a friend of a friend of the guest host. That yielded a wide range of success (Jon Hamm) and failure (January Jones).

Posted: 9/18/12 at 12:20pmMusical guest Frank Ocean was a horrible disappointment. Was thankful I watched on DVR and after a minute confirmation that it wasn't for me I fast forwarded. I enjoy seeing new artists and eagerly listen in the hope that I have someone new to follow.
