The Big Sick

Wow! This movie was magnificent! Kumail is already one of my favorite comedians, but this showed me a whole new side to him that was just devastating. Please go see this movie, its brilliant in every single way possible. I laughed, cried and everything inbetween. Some of my favorite bits were when Terry and Beth went to the gig and when terry brought up 9/11. I could not stop laughing. Also loved seeing Aidy Bryant, Bo Burnham and Rebecca Naomi Jones as well.

What a gem of a film. Funny, touching, insightful . Lovely.

Just watched it and thought it was somewhat okay once you got past all the smarmy stand-up persona garbage that plagues half the film. I'm so burned out on the dry, deadpan, ironic standup schtick. Maybe living in Chicago only amplifies the oversaturation of that particular trendy brand of comedy or perhaps attending too many parties with Second City students taking over the room with their HI-LARIOUS improv exercises has turned me off the genre, but every time Nanjiani forced a one-liner into the conversation, I wanted to shut it off. He's playing himself and maybe that's the problem. I'd probably be just as annoyed by him in real life. And are his parents really that blandly stereotypical while Zoe's parents were more dynamic and interesting? Meh.

To me, Kazan and Hunter were the only reasons to watch (even Romano had his charm) and elevated it from being something merely average, or at times, insufferable. I give it a C+.
