Dented, I checked the rates at Covered California and they look very good !Gold/Platinum plans cost between $513-697 with no deductibles for a 54-yr-old.

What Lisa has said really is the bottom line. The rates have little to do with the healthcare. No one is going to be concerned at first, siny, if the rates are decent. But I have yet to find a doctor who has learned what their reimbursement is for any procedure.

In San Diego many physicians have refused to see Medicare patients because of that reason. Now, some that I have talked to fear their compensation may be cut by 20%. In San Francisco, Bart workers with high school educations are averaging 76K a year and are striking because they want 12% more over three years. Yet no one seems very concerned that physicians may have to take a big cut----except the physicians.

There are a lot of unknowns. Siny, you notice that none of the California plans list the doctors. They are the ones providing the healthcare and they are completely in the dark on any of this. And except for a few physicians from academia, have never been a part of the new law with regards to input. I guess the government assumes that since they have a 12 year time and financial investment in their careers, they have no choice but to go along with whatever the plan calls for. And to a great extent that is exactly true. How would the people on Broadway feel if told they had to do nine shows a week and, by the way, we are reducing your salaries by 20%. That is how physicians see it.

But students entering school will see what happens. Maybe a career in medicine will not seem so glorious to the next generation. Don't think there can't be a huge shortage of physicians if it becomes financially impractical to become one. The job has long hours, it's hard work, there is a lot of responsibility and very little glory.

Jersey Girl, I assume you are referring to Canada and you are right. But it's not just the difference in pay between doctors and teachers. The BART situation in San Francisco is an example. Teachers make about the same as the BART workers. Teachers are about the least appreciated and, relative to their importance, lowest paid professionals in our society.

And you are certainly correct that the high cost of becoming a physician and the huge overhead costs of running a practice AND the very real threat of law suits requires a very sizable gross income to make ends meet. Perhaps slowly moving your way is the best answer for our society in general. But the transition would be very difficult. But I don't disagree that you may be correct about the advantages of single payer.

The physicians that I know have all seen their income go down and their work load go up over the last 10 years. The changing work environment and the increased hassle of dealing with conventional insurance coverage and has many of them ready to throw up their hands and yell " Just let me do medicine!" It has become part of the profession to deal with all the extraneous stuff. Single payer with no hassles would appeal to many but, like many on this board, most people don't want the government telling them what to do or how to do it. No one knows that more than people in the arts.

As much as i think its ridiculous to quote a comedy show with politics, its done regulararly here so when in Rome....

October 21, 2013 - After the government shutdown, Jon Stewart said all Democrats had to do to regain political footing was "a mildly competent implementation" of the health care policy they'd been touting for three years, and somehow they managed to screw it up royally, leaving Stewart to tear into President Obama and the Democrats for failing to "spin this turd."

Stewart was utterly befuddled at how buggy the Obamacare site is being. It's so bad, even the calculator doesn't work. Stewart said normally websites are set up so it's "nearly impossible to not sign up for something," but somehow the Obama administration managed to fumble at every turn.

He even had some choice words for Obama for defending the "product" of health care and saying that despite the massive number of people who haven't been able to sign up, a teeny tiny bunch of other people managed to pull it off.

Stewart sent John Oliver to sign up for the health care law, but for some reason he got trapped inside the computer and chased around by Pac-Man instead.

Sorry romantico it does no such thing. I guess you didn't read my first line where I said yes this is ridiculous to use a comedian but when in Rome.

The point is not me or even the content.

Its jon stewart who the bleedng hearts to use Esquire s term are fond of pointing too has bashed and ridiculed it more than anyone has. This failure has gone beyond fox. Its mainstream now. That's my point.

Romantico, anyone who's read your post(s) knows you don't get your news from Jon Stewart. Just as anyone who's watched his show also knows that his commentary, while funny, is very often insightful.

Again . I used it cuz it shows not only obamahaters hate it as yiu say. And cuz its funny. Not using it for its fsctual content. Usi g it cuz hes not fox and hates it.

What did you think of comments? All I'm saying is that they are funny.

And I would not think anyone would co sider Jon an obamahater so there goes that point you were trying to make.

Despite your snarky remarks, I will tell you I read it on line on a website on facebook. As soon as I get the specific name I will tell you so you can sleep at night. I will make sure you are given a source going forward but it probably will not make much difference as it goes against your politics so no matter how true it may be you will deny it. What flavor Kool Aid do you drink?
