"there really is so much more to her than the blonde hair and pop music."
Because that's what she projects.
Diva has a point. She puts out there what is making her money, and it doesn't interest me enough to dig deeper. I have to say I was indifferent to her until she did that big song about the paparazzi killing her when she's been famous for what, five minutes? Pretty obnoxious. Plus, she baits the paparazzi - it's not like they can miss her the way she dresses.

The song isn't about the paparazzi killing her specifically, it's about the paparazzi killing celebrity in general.
Paparazzi isn't really about HER. The song/video/performance is about social death, the media building you up to tear you back down and how 'The Fame' creates a fame whoring 'monster' within you acting out for their love and attention. Celebrities have a love/hate relationship with paparazzi...in this day in age, the majority couldn't live without them.
She chooses to use the media (apart from their obvious benefits) to promote designers, she'll always say who she's wearing - usually a friend of hers. Sure, she's falling into fame whoring herself but at least its for her art, rather than to promote a fitness dvd.
The thing about Lady GaGa, is that it really is the whole package. It's the image and performance just as much as it's about the music. You can take it all, or choose to stop after her music if you find her 'too weird'.
Music wise, she'll be fine. I doubt she'll continue the shallow electro-pop now she has shown how diversely talented she is - just listen to the re-worked orchestration's of her AI and VMA performances. Thats a completely different depth from the original. Even if she DOES continue with 'Poker Face' type songs - electro dance pop is HUGE in Europe if nothing else.

Exactly! If you listen to her music, hear her performances, look at her, anything, you'll see that she's doing anything but projecting an image of bland pop music. She re-orchestrates her songs for almost every major live performance, she has used and performed several versions of acoustic arrangements of her biggest hits so far, and tries to promote up and coming designers. And if it really just comes down to her having blonde hair, that's just ridiculous. Need I even say more about her personal style?

I hope, especially since she's using a backing band for live performances now, that she goes into the dance pop/rock genre. She has a few early songs that aren't on her album (Fever, Retro Dance Freak, Retro Physical, Rock Show- which sort of has a disco sound as well, and Vanity) which sort of mix dance pop with rock. She says she's heavily influenced by glam rock (David Bowie and Queen, specifically) and I really hope she explores that in the future.
In general, I just see her as someone who can successfully reinvent herself over the years and do many different genres if she wants to.
We'll see if anyone remembers her in about 5 years...

I am determined to prove you wrong and I am confident that she will.
I know this probably sounds ridiculous to anyone else but me, but I am a very passionate Lady Gaga fan but I will fight for her until people give her the respect she deserves.
The song that's most "out there" in the world is Let's Dance, a bland, incredibly repetitive piece of dance crap that got/gets ridiculous airplay. That's what I know of her. It shows no creativity, no great vocals, nothing that interests me in the least. The only other song I know is Paparazzi from seeing it on the MTV Awards, and honestly, that didn't show me anything impressive vocally either. If she's not about great vocals, then fine, but many posters in this thread seem to think she is, and she hasn't proven it to me.

Oh and PS: the songs called "Just Dance" not "Let's Dance" :)
For you, I watched the first link, the stripped down Just Dance. There is a good voice there, but her placement is pretty bad and she has some pitch issues. Still not impressed, but at least I will agree there is potential.

For good vocals (live and recorded) and creativity/versatility. I personally would go as far as to say her vocals are far better than other far more famous starts like Madonna, Britney Spears, and Janet Jackson. Insofar as performance I find her wholly more interesting than Christina Aguilera and even Beyonce, even though their vocals may be better, too.
ETA: Rathnait, what pop singers *do* you like, just curious.

Sorry, I'm not going to spend my time listening to endless Gaga music in hopes that I'll hear something I like on the sixth or tenth one.
And if the best you can say about her vocals is that they're better than those three, then I rest my case.
I like Britney, but she is not about vocals. I like some of her music and I used to like the shows she put on when she was more energetic. I like Pink and Kelly Clarkson vocally, and sometimes Aguilera when she's not riffing the hell out of a song. I like Beyonce, most of the time her vocals are pretty good. I think a lot of people spend a lot of time going on and on about how great and brilliant and talented Lady Gaga is, and it's kind of bemusing to me, because I am not seeing it. If we're going for fun and spectacle, then yes, she's entertaining.

Your loss.
And I used those three as qualifiers because they're so famous and universally recognized. But I don't get why proving why she's a good singer, or comparatively better than anyone makes her good/bad. I find her artistically captivating and tremendously talented. Beyond that, it gets tedious and frankly, pedantic, to dissect things like vocal placement, diction, timbre, etc. But I do love the unique color of her voice.
ETA: Even if her music is not your cup of tea, you've got to hand it to her, she knows how to write a catchy song, or at the very least, hook. And her acoustic performances at the piano show me a sort of talent that I can't think of any other big star in recent memory ever employing.

Her best vocals are in the Japanese 'Poker Face' acoustic (with the elephant hair sculpture on her head). She's improved so much since the Cherry Tree Sessions (which, in themselves are great).
The sheer fact she can sing like that, write catchy pop songs (that are incredibly successful), dance, maintain complete creative control...as well as being a classically trained pianist who attended an arts school (Tisch) - makes her stand head and shoulders above most pop stars from the past decade(s) and makes her far more qualified to be in the entertainment industry.
Of course, that doesn't mean you need to like her whatsoever...but at least, appreciate and respect her as an artist.
"Your loss."
What, wasting my time listening to music that isn't very good?
How is that a loss?
Just because you like something, doesn't mean everyone else is going to like it. And just because they don't agree with you, isn't a resaon to get a snotty.
I'd rather respect her as a human than as an artist.
3 Part Fuse interview with Gaga
I don't know if I'd call her "weird", but she's just too much for me.
#1 song, video, and album on iTunes. GAGA DOMINATION.
If she weren't trying so hard, I might be able to appreciate her. I don't buy it.

Yero, I WOULD call her stuff pop/dance (with some glam)--so I'm nto sure what you mean by hopign she goes that direction? One thing I appreciate about her work with RedOne, etc, is she's helping to bring the US out of their obsession with R&B/Hip Hop which has become so old and it's more of a European dance basis.
However as a fan I am PISSED that all copies of Monster (the one disc and 2 disc edition with Fame) released, at least in N America have accidentally been the "clean" version which even has Bitch in Bad Romance wiped out (why? they even say bitch on daytime tv). her label has apologized but it's not likely to send out replacement discs to those who wanted to get the "explicit" version. May seem a small thing but I think it's pretyt outrageous no one noticed.
"Even if her music is not your cup of tea"
She's not my cup of tea - how bout the bees knees? Or better, the cat's meow?
(just teasing because I'm old.)
She's absolutely fabulous. Very talented and unique, and unflaggingly committed to her style. I can't wait to see what she does next.
