re: The Lovely Bones (Peter Jackson's next project)

I absolutely love the book, and, like some other posters, I'm a little nervous to see it adapted into a movie. Hopefully Jackson will exceed my expectations.

This book touched me so deeply, as did "Lucky"... I cannot wait to see the movie but I'm a little scared it won't live up to my expectations. I think he needs to cast a total unknown as Suzy otherwise it won't work - at least not for me.

YES! I mean, can you imagine- Dakota Fanning as Suzy? Or some other such casting- ugh!

This wasn't a good book. It had the potential to be fantastic, and started off extremely well... and then it just all went to hell. I did not at all like the idea of the psychic friend who was able to communicate with the dead girl, and the whole body-possession thing was RIDICULOUS. Parts of the story had great emotional impact, but overall it was a brilliant concept that was badly executed.

I agree that it tends to fall apart at the end. There's a late turn, (VAGUE SPOILER:) involving a sexual experience, that bordered on ludicrous and pretty much destroyed the journey for me. People do adore it, but filming it will be like trying to do THE WHITE HOTEL. (Remember Streisand's attempts to get that made??) These books with metaphysical texture require a deft touch. I fear Jackson -- brilliant but inclined toward heavy -- will make it weighty in the wrong sense. But who am I to judge before he even starts?

The body possession part is the lurch I referred to that is unsuccessful.

I don't know if I could watch that film; the book gave me nightmares.

Despite the books faults, I still adore it! Some places fall apart, but I still have not found anything from the recent books I have read that top it.

Hmm...interesting. This isn't really a film I could see him doing, just judging from what he's done before (granted, I don't really know much of what he's done and I don't think I've seen any of it either). I'm interested in seeing what the film adaptation will be like, especially since he's the director; I think it's a good book...I had to read it in high school and it was definitely one of my favorites.

re: The Lovely Bones (Peter Jackson's next project)

I've been putting off reading this book forever. I went through a phase where I read a bunch of books by these sort of authors, Dorothy Allison, White Oleander (which I LOATHE), Lucky, and I sort of got burnt out. I remember I liked the first half of Lucky and the second half of it kind of burnt me out emotionally, and not really in a good way, and for the life of me I can't remember why. I'll have to revisit my livejournal from when I read this book.

I don't know. I don't think it's because I don't have a vagina, but sometimes I get very burnt out on those books about girls who discover Jesus and get raped by their daddies and stuff... they're depressing and sometimes they feel a little fake. I really want to read The Lovely Bones as I am assuming it does not fall into this genre (or at least exceeds it).

Although I think it's kind of a ploy to be making a movie out of it for Peter Jackson. "Hmm, I think I'll make a movie out of a best selling well respected novel and appeal to a whole new fanbase."

I was bored to tears by the book of White Oleander.

Oh God, don't even get me started... it was the most manipulative book I've ever read. The characters sucked, and the prose blew. The only good thing about it was that it was the sort of book you could read in one sitting because it offered NOTHING.
