i wonder if robert altman ever smacked lindsay lohan on the set of prairie home companion.
i remember when he died, she sent a letter to his family that was so unbelievably cringeworthy. *shudder*

i know someone who's very spoiled... she's 8 years old and has an ipod and a coach purse and alot of other things that an 8 year old doesn't need.
but even though her parents buy her all this stuff she doesn't need, they have raised her to be a very caring person. she's an absolute sweetheart and ver polite.
she's spoiled, but she's not a brat. she's just the child of very wealthy parents.

I was in the Coach store a few weeks ago and a young girl was on a shopping spree with her mother for her 7th birthday. She was allowed to buy two purses.
Wow blueroses, I had almost the exact same experience last week- I was in Coach buying myself something, and the customer in front of me was this maybe 5 year old girl whose parents were buying her a Coach purse...and the sad thing? (well- sad to me, I mean) It was a purse in the exact same pattern as what I was buying, kid you not- apparently I have the same taste in Coach as 5 year olds. :)
eta: i'm not sure how spoiled this is, but i knew a guy who was so incredibly lazy that, during a movie, instead of getting up and buying some snacks from the concessions center when he got hungry, he proceeded to eat his entire Sunkist can.
That sounds like pica or something.

i saw a young girl with a coach purse at the mall and i heard her say to her friend that it was a present for graduating 4th grade.
i mentioned it to a friend of mine and he said something that made me think....
he said that for all i knew she could have had a very hard year and passing 4th grade was a huge accomplishment. she could have lost a parent, or been ill and missed alot of the year, or had other problems that we may not know about.
i dont judge kids who appear to be spoiled beacuse of that.
i remember when i was really sick and having a hard time in high school, my parents bought me a $400 guitar for my birthday. it's not really that different.

I know many kids 10 & under who have 2 - 4 coach/Louie/etc/ purses/shoes/ipod covers/etc. It's more the parents trying to help the kid fit in with the rest of the kids at school.
I have "seen" many spoiled kids posting on BWW. I don't know if all that they say they get is true, but still.
Abba - you make good points, but that type of thinking can appeal to ANY situation. But it is part of life to judge the things you don't know. May not be the right thing to do but it is human nature.

Am I the only one who doesn't think that it is at all unusual to see little kids with designer handbags? Not that it's right, but. . . it seems very common to me.
My godfather bought his daughter an iPod a few months ago. I would guess she's 5 or less. She lost it within a week. =)

Those purses might also be knock offs, not the real thing.
I don't think LL is spoiled, just out of control and ruining her life and career by making immature, dangerous decisions.

Abba, I think there is a huge difference between giving a high school student a guitar and indulging a seven year old child with (two!) new designer bags.
It really got under my skin for some reason.

...and when has the damage that's been done become permanant?
On "...Housewives of Orange County" that mom who's husband lost their fortune, and they were now broke (relatively!) That younger daughter was still a little ahole who didnt appreciate anything. You'd think she would've learned a lesson.
Gotta blame the parental units...

The most annoying moment in the store was when the mother announced, "Bella has just turned seven and we're going shopping!"

Kids are like dogs...if you feed them something, they will continue to consume until they puke, and it will become their way of life.

Posted: 6/26/07 at 5:42pmUgh I have a (kind of) friend who is UNBELIEVABLY spoiled... do you guys know the Sclafani brand that sells Italian food goods? She's the child. For her 8th grade graduation, she got a horse. For her 16th birthday, she's going to get a car that her parents choose. When she's 18, she gets to pick out a car of her choice. She has 2 brothers and they both have cars, and her family has 2 cars. WHY NOT USE ONE OF THOSE? God, it makes me really angry. I honestly don't think she notices how much she flaunts it, either. But she's always saying things like "oh, my dad will just give me money." Ugh, people.

Posted: 6/26/07 at 6:20pmi think the problem is that people believe that, because they were willed into being without their will, they really really really don't need to work hard.

blueroses, the point i was making is that you dont know what those kids have done to earn that purse, or if they're been through something horrible and the purse was a gift.
i remember my mom telling my brother that a patient of theirs (she works at the children's hospital) got a brand new mustang for her 16th birthday (this was after my brother had saved up to buy his mustang) and he called her spoiled.
my mom explained everything she had been through and how when her dad said she could have any car she wanted, she said she'd like a mustang.
i'm not saying that every child who has more than they need is in that situation, but when you think that every single child who has something nice is spoiled and doesn't deserve it, you're not really being fair.
my parents could have easily bought me an applause or a squier like most of the students in my guitar class had, but because i was going through alot at the time and i was working really hard to not miss anymore school than i had to, they suprised me with an alverez.

Posted: 6/26/07 at 10:26pmSo much of it comes down to the parents. You can't expect when a child has been given everything, occassionally for the wrong reasons, that they will suddenly grow up and not remain at least a little spoiled or materialistic.
#44re: The Most Spoiled Child (Or Even Teen) You've Ever Met?
Posted: 6/26/07 at 11:38pmi think it is super easy to criticise parents like this, but obviously some people clearly have the means to purchase items like these for their small children... it has nothing to do with the kids, and everything to do with the adults. And why is this sort of materialism such a bad thing? Unless the kid is a real brat, you don't know how grounded these kids are. Having nice things doesn't make a person "spoiled."

Posted: 6/27/07 at 12:05amExactly. Spoiled and materialistic have negative connotations, but you're right - they could be very generous, grounded, sweet people. They just happen to have nice stuff

Posted: 6/27/07 at 5:55amThis guy in one of my classes was complaining about the state of the economy. It had gotten so bad that his dad sold their private jet. The rest of the section went silent. He didn't understand why the rest of us didn't sympathize with his tragedy. I think the odds of him being grounded even without a plane are slim to none.

Well, I would consider myself pretty spoiled. My parents are very well-off and always say that they'd buy me anything I want, practically no matter what it is. I've have my own TV, computer, and every popular video game system that has ever came out since I could remember. Even though I never really cared about or bought designer cloths, I spent my parents' money mainly on video games and tickets to see shows. My parents NEVER gave me any lectures, they never grounded me, they never taught me any life lessons, especially about money, but they provided me with everything I could ever want. But, I really try not to take advantage of my parents' generosity that often, because I've always been very conscious about spending my parents' money and because I know that there are other routes to happiness that are better than materialism.
I would consider myself to be a kind person, and I'm very aware that one day I'll have to stop relying on my parents to give me things without giving anything back. In my case, it wasn't really about my parents raising me in a particular way, I just simply knew that I should appreciate what they've done for me, and I'm sure there are at least a few other kids and teens who feel this way.
