No VCR when I was little! But I agree that it made the anticipated viewing all the more special. I lived for the yearly airings of:
Really Rosie.
The Sound of Music. And I love it just as much today.
It's a Wonderful Life (my Mom introduced me to it and I fell in love. Could not wait to see it every year).
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
The Wizard of Oz.
The Ten Commandments (they'd air it every year around Passover and it was just this cool, big epic...we'd all watch it together. Don't know why I loved it so much. I guess I thought it was exciting.)
Those great claymation Rankin Bass Christmas specials--ESPECIALLY The Year Without a Santa Claus! What cartoon today can top Heat Miser and Snow Miser? Also, were they the first gay characters on television? Did this air before Paul Lynde on Bewitched?
ANY Snoopy holiday special...The Great Pumpkin, the Christmas special, etc.

I watched pretty much everything from Disney, but the movie I watched nonstop was The Princess Bride. I watched it all the time, and still love watching it today.
I'm with those that didn't have a chance to watch movies over and over...
BUT
When I was about 4 or 5, there was a re-release of Dumbo. Loved that movie! And way back then (early 70s), without vcrs or cable, what they had was an LP (vinyl) that pretty much narrated the story, and had all the songs. I used to listen to that 3 or 4 times a day. And act it out.
To this day, I think Dumbo is my favorite Disney movie. At least the one that makes me the most nostalgic.
I remember those narrated Disney albums very well! My favorite was Mary Martin telling the story and singing all the songs from "Sleeping Beauty."
I played that one to death. And you're right, DD, it was a great way to "replay" the movie, at least in your mind.

I had some of those narrated albums as well. "In Search of the Castaways" was one of them. It starred Hayley Mills (sister of Juliet from "Passions").
I totally acted them out! I guess it was an early sign of what I was to become.
I wish I'd saved those.
From the age of 3 I was obsessed with Romancing the Stone. Watched it non-stop for years. Still Love it!
DD---I used to do the same thing with Burt Bacharach's "Lost Horizon." I wish I was joking, but I'm not.
Not only was that SO very gay, it was that wretched but blissful favorite of mine... the musical version of LOST HORIZON!!!
Oh, the shame. Oh, the horror!
Oh, the wonderful memories.
It starred Hayley Mills (sister of Juliet from "Passions")
While I see the resemblance now, I had no idea she was Hayley's sister. What the heck happened to Hayley? Where is she now? Last I saw of her she was on Saved By The Bell.
the little mermaid. I insisted on being called ariel til I was like 10. She had red hair, I loved her

we didnt have have vcrs til i was in highschool.
prior to that, i would make recordings with a radioshack tape recorder of THE WIZARD OF OZ so i could listen & sing along all year round.
i made audio cassettes of GONE WITH THE WIND, some Shirley Temple movies & lots of episodes of CAROL BURNETT as well!
when we got a vcr, i would wake up extra early every morning so i could watch my three favorite movies (@ the time) before school: BREAKFAST AT TIFFANYS, CRIMES OF PASSION, and HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE.... i would act them out all day @ school, & then rush home afterwards so i could watch 'em again!

JerseyGirl - Hayley Mills was supposed to star in the tour of ON GOLDEN POND with Richard Chamberlain, but when he pulled out suddenly, they decided to recast with old TV stars (Tom Bosley and Michael Learned.) I haven't heard anything mentioned for her since that recasting, which was only a couple of months ago.

i loved 3 ninjas, and i was very disapointed by the sequel's casting change.
Toy Story, I saw it in theatres and apparently cried a lot to make my parents bring me back and they did more than 10 times in theatres alone. I have it on video now so I don't know how many times I used to watch it.
