i was born in 91 as well
I always feel weird when I mention people from the 80s and no one knows who they are. I mean, I wasn't born until halfway through the 80s and I still know who these people are.
I know what you mean. Even though I may not necessarily be familiar with all of the work of people who were popular in the 80s, I at least know a bit about who most of them are.
My musical tastes are generally rather pop-leaning, but I can appreciate a good voice even when the genre isn't necessarily my thing.
my itunes is all showtunes
mine too
My itunes is probably 3/4 broadway.

It's so weird for me when people my age, or especially people older than me don't know artists that I would expect them to know. Even though I wasn't born in the 80s, I guess I expect most people to know about the notable songs and artists of that decade.

I would say my itunes is half showtunes/broadway solo albums and half other stuff.
I like older music too...the music today pretty much sucks.
I think I know a lot about the 80's.. not everything, but I know major arists and stuff.
Try not to be too shocked, but I was one of Elton John's original fans. I probably know the music of the 70's better than the 80's, when I sort of tuned out.
You have to remember that just because we were born in the 80s, doesn't mean we know all the music. I was born in 85, which means I spent four years and four months in the 80s, and am not old enough to know it. Plus, I grew up with my parents oldie music, so it wasn't really until high school where I started listening to my own music.

(How about no offense to me, SD? You were probably just thinking off the top of your head. I know what you mean though..)
What? I rarely, if ever, look at that thread, but I was generally aware that the two I mentioned are major posters in the Anthony thread. To be completely honest, I couldn't name most of the posters in there. If I offended you, I apologize. The amount of fangirling in there really isn't my thing. Perhaps it's died down of late -- I'm not sure. Regardless, I'm sure you weren't one of the irritating ones in the first place. :)
My music taste is pretty eclectic... yeah, I know everyone uses that adjective to describe what they listen to, but mine really is! I like a lot of the "chick singers" (e.g. Fiona Apple, Tori Amos's older work), but also love a lot of 90s alt-rock. I like Nine Inch Nails and stuff like that thrown in once in a while... I find the music interesting, even if I can't relate to lyrics in the vein of "black as your soul!!" Of course, showtunes takes up most of my iTunes.

I would expect most people my age to know artists from the 80s such as Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Air Supply, B-52s, Billy Idol, Chicago, Whitesnake, R.E.M, ...but most people have no idea who they are save for maybe Bon Jovi and Aerosmith.
I guess I just feel that if I know it, other people should too. Which is a stupid standard to hold.

My iTunes is about 1/2 broadway, maybe a little more. I love that my other music is so eccletic.
And to whoever loved Elton John, I do too. I wasn't an original fan butI completely love all of his music!
OK... I didn't get into music until 1999... which explains why I loved the BSB. I loved "I want it that way" (even though the song makes no sense). I had to find music for myself... and when I tell people I haven't this song or any songs from that artist, they think I'm retarded. I was just sheltered!
I was never into rock or whatever. I couldn't tell you a Guns and Roses or Chicago song. I've never heard of Air Supply. I think it depends on the type of music you like. I was a pop fan, so I know more like Cyndi Lauper, Bangles, Gogos, Pat Benatar.
I was OBSESSED with the Spice Girls.
Back in the 5th grade I loved Hanson. A lot.

I still love Hanson. Heh.
I never really liked them..but I always tried to sing that song that they had, and I could never do it the right way but I didn't really care. I forgot how the song goes.
I don't even know what a lot of the stuff on my iTunes is - probably random radio interviews and live performances and such from my favorite pop singers/groups. I've only recently really started stocking up on showtunes - for some reason, the idea of buying the cast recording of a show I hadn't seen didn't really cross my mind until a couple of months ago.
I don't like the Spice Girls, at all. I thought the people in my grade were mental for obsessing over it... I listened to the whole album too. My mom got it for me for Christmas in '98 (8th grade)... ack!
I liked Hanson after puberty.

MMMBop!
I know all the words to that song. It's sad I know. Don't make fun of me, lol.

Oooh, someone mentioned R.E.M. I love them.
I was OBSESSED with the Spice Girls.
Who wasn't? They're apparently reuniting sans Sporty. Although, I can't say that I ever listen to them anymore except for "Saturday Night Divas." I have no idea why, but I think that's the most fun song ever.
I can take pop in small doses. Like... Britney Spears's Greatest Hits? I love it. However, Madonna is someone I can listen to all the time, especially her older stuff. I love "Physical Attraction." So hot!
