This is a completely random question and a threadjack, but after reading that Wicked thread on the Broadway board that sparked some fighting within it, I was just curious: How many of you Adam thread regulars are fans of Wicked? If you are, what made you a fan? Was seeing it live a big part of why you like it?
I honestly tried to like it. Really, I did. I downloaded quite a few songs from it and I just felt it seemed so childish and ordinary. I've heard that actually seeing the show makes a huge difference and perhaps that's what I need to do.
Opinions, anyone? I didn't want to ask on the main board and start an argument (Wicked seems like a volatile topic in general), so I thought I'd pose the question in here.

I saw it live before the CD even came out, so I went in knowing like... The Wizard and I and that was it. I think a lot of what makes it so popular IS seeing it live, though, 'cause it's big and splashy and all that. Regardless of your feelings toward the show itself, the production IS spectacular.
I don't hate it. I just hate that it's really overrated.
Whoa, BWW went stupid.
Anyhow, I put the CD in one night, No One Mourns the Wicked, I didn't like high-pitched Galinda, but by The Wizard and I, I was hooked, and I really do enjoy it. I'm so excited to go see it, and unfortunately you're going to have to keep hearing me say it, because I'm not seeing it until the end of October.

Wow, weird things going on with this board.
Regardless of your feelings toward the show itself, the production IS spectacular.
That's what everyone seems to say. I kind of want to see it just for that reason alone, and I know some of my relatives in NYC want to go to Wicked with me the next time I'm there, but ugh...
CS, you get to see my JULIA!!! *drools oh-so glamorously*
I also thought it was overrated. I wanted to see the show so badly. I listened to the songs before I saw the show and I loved Defying Gravity, Wicked, What is this Feeling, etc.. but I'm not 'obsessed' with it like so many people are. I don't think it's anything *special*. It was a wonderful show though and I would see it again.
I know I'm so excited. I like her voice, and I know who she is.
What the s**t just happened to BWW?
That was weird. I couldn't reply to any posts.
So, I tried to post this about 10 minutes ago but obviously couldn't.
I've seen Wicked twice. I don't think I knew any of the music going into it, but I don't really remember. I had read the book though. It's not like Rent, where it truly affected me. But, it was entertaining, and it is quite a spectacle in terms of sets and costumes, etc. I don't think it is worth all the hype attached to it. Personally, I really enjoyed the cast I saw (Idina/Joey McIntyre/Jennifer Laura Thompson) - but there was no way I could see myself going back to the B'way show now. Maybe if someone came in that I reeaaalllyy wanted to see.
does anyone else not see any avatars or is that just me?
I remember when Adam almost played Fiyero, and I was like "ugh. great. Now I have to go see it again." Once was honestly enough for me, but someone I know had an extra ticket a few months before Idina left and she REAAAAALLY wanted me to go with her, so I did.
I saw Wicked back in May, not having heard any of the music from it other than a clip of Defying Gravity and just knowing the basics of the plot. I don't think its OMG1111!!!themostbestestshowinthehistoryofeverrr, but it was enjoyable (and although it might be because I was majorly PMSing at the time, I cried my eyes out during No Good Deed, not gonna lie) and I liked the music enough to buy the CD afterwards. I saw it with my mom, and she said it's her favorite show that she's ever seen, which kinda surprised me because she's been seeing shows for over 40 years.

Honestly, I thought Idina was some old woman, because in the movie the Wicked Witch is kinda old. Then I saw a picture of her without the makeup, and my world turned upside down.
I can see them when I go to post, but then I dont see them anymore..it's kinda sad hahaha.
I hear that the night I went was one of the best performances of the show ever...so maybe that's why I liked it so much?
I can't see pictures either.
I thought that the not being able to post thing was just for me, so I had a minor freakout. (sorry em!)

I haven't seen it yet, but I have the recording and I really like "For Good".
I don't dislike it at all, it's a wonerful show..I just don't understand why peopel are obsessed with it.
Wow... yeah, BWW is behaving strangely tonight.
I enjoyed Wicked on some level because I've always LOVED The Wizard of Oz (seriously... one of my greatest experiences was playing Glinda in high school). I like the darkness of Maguire's book (although I've come to the conclusion that he's generally a terrible writer with intersting ideas), so conceptually I think it was a cool idea to show the story of the Wicked Witch of the West. The musical, though, is way too sugary. The score has some really great moments, but almost as many really underwhelming ones ("Something Bad," and personally I've always loathed "Dancing Through Life"). I hate the jarring contrast between songs like "No One Mourns the Wicked" and "As Long As You're Mine"... just too much genre-switching for my brain to handle. Lyrically, Schwartz makes me cringe sometimes.
At the same time, though, I did honestly enjoy seeing it. It is a huge spectacle, and seeing it for the first time is really exciting. There are some cute moments, and of course show-stopping belting. I'm glad that I went, but it doesn't seem like the sort of show that would be as thrilling on repeat visits.

I obviously have some sort of emotional problem -- after listening to the CR a few times, I didn't sympathize with Elphaba at all. The whole recording just seemed so... cutesy. I don't know. It's probably just me.
Em, do you know why Adam turned the role down?
I like Wicked too, but I can't see why people obsess over it.
