Picturetaker, not to be a bitch, but capitilization is greatly appreciated at bww.
Lexi, I got too trapped by A&E to watch Adam. A&E holds great powers. =)>]

Some people are just blessed with naturally straight teeth. *smiles widely*
Quick question on behalf of a friend, and then I'm off to bed... if someone was looking for "scholarly sources" to compare Rent to La Boheme, what might one look for? I found a Study Guide written when Rent was still at the NYTW, but not much else. Perhaps he'd have more luck at his school's library? Any suggestions?
Allie, would listening to a recording of La Boheme be considered fair game for research? I'd think you would get a feel for the story and could find the similarities, etc that way.

*smiles and shows off her thousand dollar smile* Others of us weren't so blessed with straight teeth...but I am now!
Ooooh, scholarly? Good luck...I mean, there's a ton out there on La Boheme in music and opera sources (obviously)...and most often they mention Rent, but that's usually where it ends I've found. He'd have to just pull the similarities himself, its really not that difficult though. That's a really interesting question though...hmmm...

It's alright. I also suck at typing, just to warn everybody. SO if my messages are lkie htis & it bothers you, please tell me. I'm usually too lazy to change these type of things. Right before I hit the "post Message" button, i found several typing errors. Don't worry people, I can spell most of the tiome, but I can't type. =]
Well, this is thread 9, so you kinda have to go on the assumption that we didn't all meet today.
I'd say the Bible is as close to a primary source as you can get with Rent, it's the official book. I wouldn't really know, Anthony's autiobiography might help too. They're not written by historians or anything, but they're primary sources.

I don't know, Emcee. The liner notes on my La Boheme CD are fantastic. VERY detailed synopsis, and a bit of a Puccini mini-bio. But, yes, the music... I'm not sure. Maybe I'll upload the CD for him.
I mentioned the big black book to him, and also part three of the DVD documentary. Other than that, I can't think of anything!

That might be enough. I mean, obviously there are no musical similarities.
I've still got wires on the back of my teeth.
There are also a lot of videos of La Boheme out there. If you can't see it live, it's probably the best way to see the similarities.
And, I bought a libretto of La Boheme for like $2 on amazon that's in Italian and English. That helps to.
*is probably writing EE about it next year*

Does he need specific sources on Puccini and Boheme? I could give you the names of a few to check the library if he needs something "scholarly."

Go for it, Amber, with the book titles... this tiny bit of online research I've just done has gotten me intrigued! I may have to do some reading of my own.
This reminds me of the paper I'm supposed to begin to think about soon. I'm taking a class in Restoration drama, and we have a term paper coming up. I'm going to do it -- I think -- on The Beggar's Opera and its role as an ancestor of the modern musical, but it's going to be hard to do research the way you normally would, with books and stuff -- I have to listen to recordings and watch videos and things.

Beggar's Opera is really interesting...musically, I find it rather boring...but as far as what it did, and how it completely turned everything around (and put Handel out of a job)...ok sorry, nerd moment over...

Angela, I still don't remember more than a few people's real names, and I've been around a really long time. I'm really looking forward to Adam's podcast too.

That's a much more fun way of doing research anyway, Em!
Gah, okay, I have to go bang on the ceiling with a broomstick, a la Mr. whats-his-face with the waffle in Friends, because there's a party going on up there. And then to bed! 'Night, all!
Oh, and hello to the newbies.

HECKLES! It was Mr. Heckles. Okay, I can rest easy. Bye!
Mr. Heckles!
"We'll try to keep it down...."
night, Allie.
I'm afraid I might fall behind, when I go to bed.
Canadian- I now go back to my posts & capitalize everything that needs to be. =]
I have no more papers to write. That's the last I'll say about it until Friday.
Aww, thanks, it's just harder to read because things aren't broken up. You can call me CS or Sarah, everyone pretty much calls me whatever they feel like. And they switch on occasion which is fun.
I clicked on this thread without reading the title, and I got confused when I saw that I was on page 4.
Night, Allie!
Thanks for doing that, Angela.

That's from tonight's concert. Nothing too in-depth, but fun to read anyway. Apparently someone gave him a photo of herself as a gift, which is odd, but I digress.
So much for my "doing work," right?
