I hope you get it, tlp! Good luck!
In case anyone just wants to hear the new arrangement of Glory, I took it from the audio... it's not really great quality, but it's by no means unintelligable.
I'm off to bed. 'Night, all!

Good luck, Tracie - it would be great to see it even if you can't edit it down.

Thanks for all you do, Tracie!
Can't wait until the girls arrive back from the concert!
Tracie - Let me know if you need any help at all. I've been fooling around with a bunch of video clips for the site, so I may be able to help. Then again, I might be inept. *g*
Does anyone know if there is a fuller version? Is that even a word? I thought there was a longer one on Sunday night. I could be making things up again.
No you're right, there's a one hour version of this show which aired a couple of days ago at 7pm. Since they list the same two guests, it seems that there must have been a longer segment.
We're baaaacckkk!
heh. Per usual, I need to eat, then I'll post.
We've been waiting for you, and having quite a bit of drama of our own while you were gone. At some point you'll all want to read back, for sure!
Uh oh...
Wait, it's nothing bad! Very good, in fact. Adam was on a Comcast TV show that *some* of us (not me) were able to stream on the web. Allie and Mandi got audio versions, and Tracie is working on a video version, so you will not have missed out, either.
Eeek. Drama.
I had a great time!
Alright!
I don't really know how much there is to say, so this won't be *terribly* long.
Adam puts on one hell of a show -- for everything the man lacks in acting, he makes up for in presence, charisma, charm, passion, and wit. He was a bit more toned down and subdued without his band, but this really gave him a chance to show off his musician-ship, which was very nice. He played bass for the majority of the set, but he also had two acoustics with him, only one of which he used. In performance, he makes evident every reason and then some for why he's a star.
I didn't take pictures. I tried a bit, but they weren't turning out well. He looks great, though. :)
His voice sounds as good as ever -- and strong and powerful as hell. I've never heard him riff I'm With You the way he did tonight.
The set was a good blend of showtunes and Adam's own stuff -- he weaved in and out of them. From memory, not really in order.... Beautiful Song, Model Prisoner, Liken a Razor, Maybe This Time (different arrangement than last year's from Joe's Pub, and even more beautiful), Maria, Book of Endings, Every Time Around, a cover from a jukebox workshop he did, but he didn't say whose, I'm With You, Something of Ours... and Glory and What I Did for Love as the encores. His re-arrangements of the showtunes are perfect fits for his voice, especially What I Did for Love. The scaled-down arrangements of his own music totally work; they're a lot more chill and relaxed than the full band, in your face stuff on the CD's. The only disappointment was that he didn't play any new music. Glory gave me chills. Always does.
He told some stories, and got away without dirty jokes. He had funny moments even without those, though -- he asked why there was so much barbed wire around the campus -- to keep the students in, or the Hasidic Jews out? Commented on all of the girls, added that there were surely gay guys, and added "hey, I know who my fans are!" Gave some very heartfelt background about Civilian and how emotional his life was when he wrote it, and explained how he wrote Model Prisoner during Aida tech -- he spoke with even more honesty than usual, which is cool.
The Q&A was interesting. Someone asked (a) shoe size? (ten) and (b) boxers of briefs? (boxer briefs) -- I mean, hello? Put the two together. College students! Someone asked theatre advice, and he said to learn to audition well -- you can be the worst actor ever, but if you know how to audition well, that'll help you. He got asked about taking care of your voice, says he drinks a lot of water.... if Rosario is that sexy in person (he says yes)... if his personality is anything like Roger, if he thought Rent was true to Jonathan's vision -- he said a bit about how revenue isn't THE indicator of good art, and was really very passionate about what he was saying, so good for him -- got a marriage proposal ("I'm already married...."). Nothing really great, but his answers were pretty interesting, eloquent and well thought-out.
The crowd was special. Loud and shrill. Mostly hardcore Rent fans. That got TONS of applause, while his CD's only got a smattering. They seemed into him, though. Maybe This Time got like... zero reception. I think they had no idea what it was. I dunno. He talked about why he loved the song -- saying that it was just a favorite, very beautiful moment in the show where so many talented actresses could really shine, and a moment that he got to watch from the stage. Anyway, they shouted weird things and whatnot. At one point, they all went "awwww!" and Adam was like "awwww! LET ME FINISH THE STORYYYY!"
He signed for about an hour after the show, and it just went row-by-row. By the time we were getting up there, the people were cutting it down to one item per person to be signed (people were there with PILES of stuff) and were telling you to hurry up and whatnot. He was being very chatty with everybody. I can't remember being as nervous as I was tonight in a long time, and I'm not sure why. I got up to him, and I wasn't nervous anymore. I was unrolling my poster for him, and he looked up and... the look on his face is one of those sort of mental pictures -- he was like "HEY!!" I handed him the poster, and just... talked. I was like "hey, how are you?!" Then he said "hi sweetie," again, and signed my poster. He said the words as he was writing them -- it was cute -- "All my love, Adam Pascal." He was personalizing stuff for people, and my inclination is to think that he might be a little embarassed at this point not to know my name. Like, he'd look stupid if he asked, even though I know he doesn't know it -- and I'm fine with that, he's not required to! I was going to tell it to him, but I... didn't. I watched him write it, and was like "awwww, Adam!" out loud. Who knows why? He was like "so, how are you?" and for a good few seconds, I just sort of nodded and smiled: "I'm......... *nod, smile,*" Adam goes "oh, good!" and I said something to the effect of being quite good at the moment. He asked if we came all the way from New York, and I said we did in fact drive in from the city. He looked up and thanked me, and asked if we had fun -- enthused yes. We took a picture -- table in the way, bah. Fantab took it, so I asked her if our eyes were open. Then I turned to Adam and said "you ALWAYS close your eyes?" He gets this vain look and goes "who, me?!" "Yes!" Then I took pictures for everybody else I was with. I passed by the table once more right before someone else got up to Adam, and he stopped me again to say thank you for coming all the way there. I waved and said something like "it was great to see you!" and took off. He's so very kind, and I hope he knows how much I appreciate that.
Sweet! Thanks for posting - I'm going now, but I'm glad I stayed up.
I'm pretty sure he did get to everyone. I heard someone say the turn out was about 175.
And yeah, he took photos with anyone who asked.
Aw, yay! Great post, Em, sounds amazing.
He remembered you name. That makes me happier than it should, but it's seriously awesome.

oh that good news! There's hope for me then!
Of course, my luck there will be a huge turnout (though that would be good for Adam's career) and he won't have time to stay for very many autographs.
5 days now 'til I get to go, I can't wait! I've been driving everyone crazy... everyone I work with, especially. They have no idea who he is but by now when I say 'guess what' they roll their eyes and go "How many days 'til you get to see that guy?" lol
Great review. :)
Wait, skittles, no he didn't! And he didn't ask, either. I think he probably figures that at this point, he'd look like a dumbass to admit that he has no idea what my name is. Next time I see him, I'll shake his hand or something and say that I don't think I've ever *properly* introduced myself.

Em - WHAT are you doing awake?!?!
I'm still on CALI time - that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it!
Heh, I knew a full review would be up before I even got home!
So I mean, Em described everything but I guess I just wanted to say from my own perspective...
The only time I've seen him sing live was from the balcony of Aida years ago and the one time at the Elvis Costello concert. So I was very excited.
When he came out and smiled and said hi to the crowd, I even said out loud "oh my god, oh my god, oh my god." Like, this was really happening. It just hit me.
I mean, you've heard this before, but as a performer, he just has an amazing charisma, stage presence, everything. His smile melt the room, and the honesty and realness in him came out, and really the whole night I just thought that I can't believe I'm really there, seeing this.
Maybe This Time was fantastic! As the first Broadway music I ever heard in my life, the songs from Cabaret hold a special place in my heart, and boy did Adam deliver! As he went into the verses, he kept going higher and you could see the feeling in the song in his face. It was just great.
And Maria...fortunately, no mention of disliking West Side Story, but...an amazing song and an amazing performance. His high note at the end was gorgeous, and the passion with which he sang the "Marias" in the middle, even in the jazz version was just...amazing.
Umm, he didn't understand the excitement of him taking off his jacket...
And Glory, which of course, just...wow...I noticed he flipped pages on a stand so he had words handy. Heh. Some things don't change I'm glad he was able to make it a bit more his own, while totally staying true to the song and the character.
And I really loved What I Did For Love. It's a great song, and throw in his voice and passion, and I think just the meaning...it was a great way to end the concert.
Oh the answer to would he say he's like Roger was No. I laughed, thinking of what Anthony wrote in his book about that. He said maybe the one thing they have in common is their passion for music.
And I dunno, I really loved his answer about auditioning. Like he started to say there's one piece of advice I can give you, and you so expect to hear go to college, or be yourself, or be able to deal w/ rejection, etc. but he gives something so honest and unusual as to say be a good auditioner, mentioning he's not one. Poor Adam. I dunno, I just really liked the honesty in that answer. Not that I would have expected less, but it just really struck me as something I wouldn't expect to hear as the one thing he would tell people.
Ooh, and yes, he was very passionate about talking about how great things aren't necessarily financially successful. He said like haven't we ever seen a show, movie, play that we thought was so great...but people didn't do go to see it? Then he added how he thinks if Rent premiered on Broadway now, he's not sure it would do better financially than the movie, but that wouldn't change its greatness. Another answer I really liked.
Emcee isn't exaggerating about her nervousness
Though granted the whole time, I kept saying calm down, it's fine, and then when we were like 5 ppl away, I started getting nervous, which apparently I was supposed to be the not nervous one so that wasn't a good sign.
But aww, Adam's so sweet. His face when he saw Emcee and was like Hey! just so warm and inviting, anyone could melt. He actually said oh, we drove all the way up to see him? Kind of amusing. We're giving him the benefit of the doubt that he was a little direction-confused and doesn't think we live in Florida.
I don't remember if this was before we all left or Emcee but he really seemed generally concerned like oh we drove all this way, did we enjoy it? (Of course we did). Again, really sweet.
So I got there I suppose more nervous than I expected. I wasn't expecting him to remember/recognize me from the Costello concert but when I got there he was like Hi! How ARE you? And then told me he's sorry, he forgot my name(which I'm pretty sure I never told him), and I was just pretty shocked/taken aback that I very weirdly said, kind of shaking and muttering...You...remember...me...from...the...Costello...concert? And he took a minute and then said yes, of course! I'm thinking maybe he recognized my face but not specially like where. Anyway, that was so unbelievable and his smile, and he's so sweet and I'm sorry this is getting to be very badly constructed sentences with bad grammar, but that's my state right now.
Oh, then well I'll show you guys which picture I printed for him...one I got of course from Emcee's fan photos...and he saw it and kind of commented on it, like...I was still in a weird state so I can't remember his tone but he said something like ohh, a headshot? I think the tone was a bit of surprise just b/c it was random and prob the only pic of that he signed of the night. I was still in a just...nervous/shaky/surreal state so I had to take a moment, and then was like ohh yeah, it's..my favorite picture of you. My cheeks must have been pretty red when I said that...
And then he thanked us again for coming. Oh, I think I mustered in a "you-were-great-BTW" at the end. One of these days I gotta remember to say that first...
Oh, and finally just a few comments on the "special" audience. I mean, the expected...big Rent fans, screaming, etc. But first...Maybe This Time was the third song he sung and these 3 girls in front of us were talking the whole time! I'm the kind of person who gets very distracted by these things and I was getting really pissed. I even leaned over to ask them to be quieter during songs. I think that did something, they weren't completely silent, but didn't talk as much after that.
Someone screamed out for him to sing "Suddenly Seymore." Random much.
Ohh, and after he made the Hisidic joke that I loved so hard at, this woman 2 seats down from me said "good thing there aren't any Jewish people here." Now, this is a Catholic school? So maybe that's why she said that? But still, Adam's Jewish!! I mean...I just looked at her and said...yes there are...and she got this nervous look on her face and said were you offended by the joke and I said no I laughed the hardest and she laughed and said oh good...but I don't know. Even if it is a Catholic school, it was open to the public...and to think/assume there's no Jews there just seems very odd to me.
Oh, and of course ppl were whispering along w/ Glory. I finally covered my ears so I just heard Adam and no one else. Eh, there was barely any singing so I guess that's good. More talking than I would have liked. And yeah the laughing while he was hitting really high notes made no sense.
That all aside, it was just...an AMAZING night. Adam is just an amazing performer who could take your mind away from everything but him. He's so great.
He was probably thinking "DAMN, I looked good," re: the picture.
rawr. I hear my roommate typing, and I cringe thinking of trying to sleep through it.
The picture I brought
Haha Em, that thought actually crossed my mind as I was typing that...
Ooh, another thing to add. For the record, he's not a fan of tech week. He actually demonstrated it for those unfamiliar w/ a tech week by "standing here" and "standing there." It was amusing.
Oh no! Your roommate isn't perturbed by the 9am fire alarm?
ETA: Jyn, I think the signing bit is different for each. This was advertised w/ meet and greet and I'm pretty sure they paid extra, so he was supposed to stay an hour. I did forget my coat so we went back and he was still signing--I think it was a bit over. But my assumption is it's what each college paid for--if they didn't get the meet & greet, he'll probably do what he did for the others--sign for a couple of minutes with the restrictions.
But he took pictures with anyone who asked, and personalized everything, asking everyone except Em their names
Sorry, Em. I knew that, my mind wasn't connecting. Heh, I even made the nametag comment before and I still posted that. Whatever. I'm out of it. :-P
Glad you had a great time as well, WRQ. Hopefully we can weasel some responses out of Fantab and Bohemian tomorrow, I like to hear all the different perspectives of these same events. Especially when it's people's opinions I kind of trust, as opposed to a bunch of random LJers commenting about how much Adam looks like a Hanson brother.
I want to sleep but my head hurts too much.
Glad to hear you guys had a great time (and even more glad to see the ultra-detailed reviews :-P)
