Could it be an open book with writing on the two open pages?

I'm always buying more Sharpies because I hate when they lose their sharp point. I just have black and silver ones.

I have a bright green sharpie. Raul touched it. Therefore it is special to me.

So, I saw Threepenny Opera this afternoon. I'm really glad I did - I love the score, which I'd only heard a few songs from before. I'm not sure that this production does the show full justice. I have a lot of mixed feelings about it. The audience seemed to like it quite a bit but not love it. Most of the performers were very good. Alan Cumming did his best and was quite engaging, but I do think he's miscast, as others have said. Cyndi Lauper seemed right, and I found Nellie McKay strangely fascinating. She's not a seasoned theatrical performer, obviously, but I enjoyed her odd readings and unusual voice. The two friends I was with were very taken with Jim Dale, but he left me a little cold, I'm not sure why.
The production had an interesting look and some good moments, but I felt the director was putting in too many *nudge, nudge, wink, wink* moments for the theater queens. He seemed to be updating it in a rather superficial way. Interestingly, I was with a gay couple involved in the theater, and they didn't like this aspect at all.
I have to say again, though, that the score is incredible. It's so obvious how much Cabaret depends on it, but I think Threepenny's music is much better. It's so much odder and more astringent. So I'm not at all sorry that I went today. We also had great house seats, thanks to my friends - 6th row center.

I know nothing about the show, but I'm glad you had a wonderful time. You should post your review on the main board, as only a handful of people read this thread.

Which is why I'm posting it here! I'll leave the main board reviews to people who see more and know more about it than I do. But thanks for the suggestion, Lexi.

Oh. Well, your posts always have an aura of knowledge about them, even if you're truly not extremely knowledgeable about a certain topic.
I'll put it on my list of shows to see when I get to NY. Even if he's miscast, I'd love to see Alan Cumming live in something, so I hope he's still in the cast by the time I'm there.

I might want to see it. I don't know, I'm always open to suggestions.
I know what you mean about the main board, Chloe. I buried my Company review in the Raul thread for that reason. I just don't feel like I'm experienced enough in reviewing shows to be posting on the main board at this point. I mean...Margo may read it! *panics*

Right now it's a lilmited run slated to close on June 18, but it was very full today, so maybe it'll extend. Alan Cumming is certainly a presence on stage, and I think he does his very last song extremely well. I also saw him in Design for Living with Jennifer Ehle. She's an absolute goddess on stage, incredibly radiant.
As for my aura of knowledge, I think I'm pretty well educated, but in theater I'm in kind of a middle ground - not bringing a fresh, new perspective like you students, nor someone who's seen a huge number of shows and learned a lot about theater history, so I feel a little diffident about posting a review.

I'm glad to hear you liked it! I'm trying to get a tickets, but I think I waited too long to get anything through HipTix.

I know exactly what you mean, skittles. I was debating whether to even link my review on LJ here at all.
I'm glad that you enjoyed Threepenny Opera, Chloe, and thanks for posting your review. There are so many things opening soon... it's exciting! As a side note: oh my god, I would LOVE to see Jennifer Ehle on stage. She's amazing on film.

I think I've developed some review fear. I haven't posted a review, save for Company, in a long, long time.

I love Jennifer Ehle - she was so wonderful in Pride and Prejudice. If you ever have the chance to see her on stage, definitely take it.
Emcee, what's HipTix? I don't think I've heard of that before.

Have you heard of Lincoln Center's StudentTix program? It's kind of like that. You sign up, it's free, and you can get student tickets without having to wait on rush lines and without the spontenaity, because you can order them online in advance.

Sounds good. Maybe you can still get a ticket through them, especially if it extends.
I'm watching Zoe Caldwell reading some of Mary Tyrone from Long Day's Journey into Night. It's in a documentary about Eugene O'Neill that's on 21 right now. She's pretty astounding. Al Pacino, Christopher Plummer, Liam Neeson, Robert Sean Leonard and Vanessa Redgrave have also read from O'Neill's plays. Wow!

Isn't Jennifer Ehle doing Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare In The Park this summer?
And this is WAY late, but on the Emmy Rossum front- I know someone who did her make-up for an event and said she was a nightmare.

That's right. It seems like quite a stretch for her, but I think there's plenty to be said for making that character a young beautiful woman.
I'm not surprised about Emmy Rossum. I have the impression that the director of Phantom was somewhat infatuated with her and gave her the idea that she's a really talented star in the making. Probably did her a lot of harm.

Ooh, Jennifer Ehle as Lady Macbeth? That sounds really interesting.
I've noticed, Emcee... which is sad, because I like reading your reviews.
I've heard (though it's never a good idea to trust these things) that Emmy Rossum was kind of a diva from the start of things with Phantom.

aww, thanks. I'll try to post more of them. Thing is like, when I saw Bernarda Alba, it was about to close, so I didn't post a review, because frankly, who would care?

Yup, Jennifer Ehle will indeed be playing Lady Macbeth to Liev Schrieber's Macbeth. The run starts June 13th. Can't wait. :)

That's a fair point, Em.
I really love Jennifer Ehle and would love to see her do Shakespeare, but Macbeth isn't one of my favorites. I'm sure she'll be great, though.

I don't think I've ever seen Macbeth live before, it might be better performed than read. Liev Schreiber is great too. He was in a little movie called A Walk on the Moon, which I really recommend. It had Diane Lane as a frustrated housewife married to Liev. She ends up having an affair with Viggo Mortensen's character. I really like it.
