That's not a snub; they're not eligible, by the rules.

I hate how hollywood didn't even acknowledge the movie.

The songs have to be written for the movie.

Did you really expect it though? I was honestly surprised it got as much press as it did when it was released...

LOL I live in a very jewish town.. and my friend goes to her mom "I'm going to marry a black man" and her mom goes "as long as he's jewish". They're very concerned about that.
ROFL.
It just amuses and bothers me so much that my parents would totally flip out if I dated a guy who wasn't Jewish, since we're really not religious at all. I also get the feeling that they would be less flipped-out about my brother going out with a girl who wasn't Jewish, and that double standard majorly bugs me.

I'm Catholic, I don't think my parents really care who I marry. We've never really discussed it. They're very open minded about things like that. They did make me have my confirmation so that I could be married in a church though.

I guess I never realized it was a huge deal...I'm a Christian, but my parents would never flip if I dated someone who wasn't Baptist or anything....

I'm not sure how to phrase this, but I think some of the reasoning behind why Jewish parents are so stereotypically hung up on their children marry Jews has to do with the history of persecution; you know, need to preserve and have Jewish children.

Yeah, I know. I just think it's strange in a way. You can always convert.

I think Em pretty much hit the nail on the head. And that's precisely what makes my parents' issues about it so funny. I don't know if this is true for other religions, but a child is considered Jewish as long as the mother is. So if I were to marry a non-Jewish guy, our theoretical offspring would still be Jewish*, whereas if my brother married a non-Jewish woman, their kids would be whatever she was. But my parents seem more concerned with me than with him.
* I don't plan on having children, making the what-religion-would-they-be issue even more of a moot point. Yet my parents can't bring themselves to not care.

*sigh* You all are gonna have to tell me how the Oscars go, because I refuse to sit and listen to one more comment from my father about gay cowboys.

Right, Em. And the number of Jews is diminishing everday because of intermarriage and death, so many Jews are really against it. Even though people say they'll have a Jewish home, unless it's totally Jewish, it often seems to end up a different way.

I can understand why my parents are hung up on it. If I had to decide today, I don't think I'll have children. And I honestly don't think that will change, even though everyone always tells you it will. I can still see my parents wanting me to marry a token "nice Jewish boy" even if I REALLY wasn't going to have children, just... because, but it is sort of funny in that it's become a total stereotype.

I guess I could kind of understand that...I just didn't think it was nearly as prominent and such a big deal today

But I mean, I don't understand why it matters. It's just a religion. I'm not trying to be disrespectful or anything.

I think I'll try to jump into this conversation, even though I'm not Jewish. To people who take their religion very seriously it is important to them that their family stay that religion. It's the same reason that if a non-Catholic marries a Catholic they have to convert or they can't be married in the church.
