I guess a Renthead beat you to it, Lexi. It would be nice to own that Newsweek.
I'm glad he'll be doing the show with Larry and am still hoping for a new song.
So was this basically a crafts fair you went to? I find that stuff very appealing also, and understandably expensive since it usually takes a lot of time. A few years ago a bought a little piece of pottery of a baby turtle emerging from its egg. It's very lifelike and beautiful.

I totally would've done the same thing, Lexi.
Anyway, in all fairness, I don't see how the crazy Wicked fangirls/fanboys (a surprising amount of the latter) could be much worse than the crazy Rent fans, not to mention that there's a lot of crossover.

Thanks ponine. :) It's cool to see an old-but-new-to-me face around here.
Yes, Chloe, it was. It's neat that we both enjoy crafts fairs! They had booths spanning six blocks with pottery, woodwork, paintings, handmade clothing, handmade purses, jewelry -- stuff like that. I have no idea what the technical term for it is, but there's a kind of art where a painting looks eerily similar to a photograph but is indeed a painting. There was a painting in that style of a village in Italy that I absolutely loved, but it was $200. Like you said, the price is completely understandable considering the time that goes into these masterpieces, but my financial situation considered, I'm kind of forced to admire from afar for now.
There was also a lot of typical fair food. I'm not into greasy food at all, but I'm so tempted to just pig out on gyros and kebabs and the like for one night, even though I don't eat red meat or poultry.

It's great to see you back, ponine!
I wonder how much of the usual Elphaba worship Adam could manage to appropriate. It doesn't sound like the part or show are structured to make that very easy, but somehow I think he could do it.

You're right, Ash, but imagine all the Rent and Wicked fans combined! That's like... Idina territory. You're definitely correct in that there's a lot of crossover, though.
Although, now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not even sure that the actors playing Fiyero even garner that much attention from the fans. There's obviously not a lack of interest entirely, but let's face it, the show is all about the two witches.

At least there would be 47 million audios of him.

ponine, I really love your avatar.
Anyway, that's totally true about Fiyeros never garnering a huge amount of attention. It's pretty impossible to draw attention from Elphaba and Glinda, especially with such a thankless part. Hee, Idina territory. I didn't even think of that!
Heh... I fear that I'm going to be the obsessive collector when it comes to Company next season. If it becomes out of hand, cut me off.

Posted: 7/13/06 at 11:09pmI feel like Norbert in Wicked got him quite a few fans. But maybe that's just me. I'd just like to see Adam live onstage. Period.

I'm just going to continue to pray that he never sets foot on the Gershwin stage. Unless, of course, it's housing a Chess revival... hah, in my dreams.
I always feel like I need to explain my dislike of Wicked; I feel that everyone probably thinks I'm a hypocrite for disliking a show with crazy fans but liking a performer who has pretty crazy fans himself. I've tried so many times to like the music, but I just... don't. It seems overly "cutesy" to me, which maybe is some of its charm for certain people, but I always end up just turning it off. I like what is probably its "darkest" song, No Good Deed, but I just have never developed a liking for the music. I keep telling myself that I'll see it when I get to NY, but I'll probably want to spend my money on other shows.
ETA: Elphie, that might be true, but I think a lot of that might have had to do with Norbert being in the OBC. You don't see David or Sebastian really gaining too many fans because of the show.

Posted: 7/13/06 at 11:14pmI've just been reading about the latest Disney show, a musical by Andrew Lippa based on a book by Jules Feiffer called The Man on the Ceiling. I know nothing about it except that the main character is a boy, but I wonder if there would be a part for Adam there. He has a really good relationship with Disney, after all.

Ah, good point, Elphie... I hadn't thought of that, but I suppose he wasn't quite the fan commodity he is now before playing Fiyero. It doesn't seem like he's inextricably associated with that role the way that Idina and Kristin are with theirs, though.
That's understandable, Lexi. I've always been obsessed with The Wizard of Oz (I think orangeskittles is probably with me on this one), which is a bit cutesy as it is. So I can appreciate Wicked in the satirical (the book at least) sense. I really wish they'd gone darker with the stage adaptation, but based on the fan response, they obviously knew what they were doing.
Hmm, that sounds interesting, Chloe. I haven't gotten around to reading that main board thread yet.

1)Great to be back everyone.
2)Thank you siren! Yay for piazza love! I like yours as well!
3)I also wish that they went a bit darked with Wicked. There are so many aspects of the novel that I wish they incorporated into the musical. I guess it's all about the "family factor" now.

Oh, I love The Wizard of Oz, though. A lot of that might have to do with Judy Garland, though. I think she was lovely.
I can't be the only one who tried to play Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in time with The Wizard of Oz, too!
I actually saw The Light in the Piazza, the book, in the used bookstore I mentioned today. I was about to buy it, but realized I have a million other things on my reading list. They were asking a lot for an old and worn paperback, too.
I checked out The Phantom of the Opera from the library... to watch or not to watch?

Watch it. Patrick Wilson (Raoul) is worth watching it for. He's brilliant. Emmy Rossum and Gerald Butler didn't impress me though. It's a decent movie to say the least.

Have you seen it before, Lexi? If not, I'll reserve my thoughts.
I've been so into Piazza lately... it took me forever to get into the score, but now that I have, it's so gorgeous. I'd like to read the novel or see the movie, but I too have so many things I want to read before the end of the summer.

Posted: 7/13/06 at 11:42pmPiazza is addicting. I think that it's that type of musical that is hard to dislike, although it is possible. I was going to get the book when I went, but it was too expensive.

No, I haven't. I think I saw bits and pieces at a friend's house, but never really got into it. I know a few of the songs, but I've never seen it on Broadway, so I don't have too much to compare it to. I know that the movie isn't supposed to be wonderful, but it's something to do.
Piazza isn't really catchy, that's for sure. I downloaded the recording with the intent of getting into it, but I haven't imported it into my iTunes yet. Someday...

I never really got Piazza until I heard Celia Keenan-Bolger as Clara. I think she and Katie Clarke have an acting take on the character that feels more... right. I'm so glad that it was broacast on PBS, though.
I know that, like, 90% of theater people either always hated or are now sick of the stage version of Phantom, but it's one of the first musicals I fell in love with. I feel like the movie sort of amplified a lot of things not to like about it. Gerard Butler is honestly cringe-worthy, but I agree that you should watch it anyway. Patrick is good!

Meow meow, Patrick!
Er, sorry. I honestly don't know the first thing about the guy, but boy is he a cutie. :)
I know what you mean about something that isn't generally held in high regard anymore being one of the first shows you loved, though. I think Jesus Christ Superstar is among the first shows that I really adored, and even though I'm not completely and totally enamored with it as I once was, I still have a huge soft spot for it, even if most people feel it's pure cheese.

I actually like a lot of Andrew Lloyd Webber. I love Phantom of the Opera and Evita, and I can't think of any shows of his offhand that I really dislike. Although I'm not familiar with some of them.
Patrick is so cute, but Raoul is perhaps the only character on Broadway that's even less interesting than Fiyero.

Posted: 7/14/06 at 12:03amI honestly love the Phantom movie. Everything I felt when I saw it live I felt again when I saw it on the big screen. There were a bit of things I felt slightly out of place, but no real problems with it. And I'm sorry, but Gerald Butler in eyeliner is pretty sexy.

Every time I see "Raoul," I think of "rhymes-with-towel."
I love the Evita movie soundtrack. How sad is that? Yes, I actually enjoy Madonna singing Rainbow High. I'm pretty sure this discredits my taste entirely.

Yeah, but note the spelling difference.
I love Antonio Banderas's Che. Madonna would've been good if she could sing the score without the key changes. She totally can't compare to Patti LuPone or Elaine Paige, though.
I'm glad that you liked the movie, Sarah. I think that some of my dislike stems from denial about the more chintzy/melodramatic aspects of the show itself. I honestly can barely listen to Gerard sing that part, though, and I don't think that the Phantom should be conventionally attractive. I feel like you're supposed to be drawn to him against your will by his passion and the seductive quality of his voice, and Gerard just didn't do that for me. I really didn't like some of the pacing/tempo changes that they did, either, but I'm sure everyone is sick to death of people criticizing that movie, so I'll stop.
