so did i. it's all good emcee!
Yes, I was very surprised to look and see that 1000 was long gone.
I posted on the RENT hate thread and am curious what you all will think...
Also got a smile out of everyone begging Adam to wear a loincloth on the Tarzan thread.
I don't even want to look at that thread. I just don't feel like reading the idiocy that I know is going to be on that thread... coming from both sides.
It's not as bad as you might expect, I think. Nia contributed some thoughtful remarks, and so far no one's gotten particularly nasty, aside from a couple of comments.
Maybe I'll check it out. I feel like I'm too late to the game to have my comments matter or be read, and I'm too tired to think it through enough... all I'd give is sentimentality. I will read it, though... after I nap.
I read the first page of that thread (I didn't even know it existed until you mentioned it), and got upset and couldn't read anymore. It's so upsetting when "hate" and "RENT" go together.
It's not everyone's cup of tea, and I'm fine with that, but in general terms, I hate when people are so quick to shoot down a show that they know if VERY important to a lot of people.
I agree with you completely!! I mean, why do you have to start a thread bashing a show that means the world to people? That's why those "I hate Wicked" or "I hate Bklyn" threads made me sick... if it gets people interested in theatre, or helps them find something within themselves, then more power to them!! And just because this one particular person had a bad experience at RENT, and doesn't particularly care for it, he/she shouldn't go around bashing it, after only seeing it ONCE, with a not-so-great cast.
Sorry it upset you so much, but the way I look at it, anything really popular is going to attract its share of people who "hate" it, partly because their expectations get raised so high. When it turns out to be something they don't like, they can get really resentful. And of course, no piece of theater is going to be liked by everybody.
Anyway, I mentioned it because I figured I gotten in so late in the game that there might not be any replies.
I hate Brooklyn, and I don't really have an issue expressing my dislike for it, but I don't exactly go around starting threads for the sole purpose of congregating other people who hate it. I just feel like if you hate something, hate it respecftully, and understand that some people like it. For example, there's a poster on this board, who, EVERY time someone posts ANYTHING whatsoever about Rent, he has to jump in and be like "I hate Rent. It didn't do anything for me." What's the point?

Here here, BroadwayDiva!
While I certainly respect any well-thought-out opinion, even if it's negative towards a show I adore (read: RENT) it saddens me to see all of the "I hate ______!" and "______ sucks!" threads around here.
Where is the love?

I definetly agree, Emcee.
Chloe, thanks. I'm not sure if what I said made any sense or not, I'm really rather frazzeled.
It's totally okay if you hate a show, just don't clog the boards with a million threads dedicated to hating the show, or make pointless posts bashing the show, like a lot of people on the board have been doing lately.
I think I know who you're talking about, Emcee, and I totally agree that this person has no point in posting about RENT if it's just to completely shoot down the show. That's just not cool.
Certainly it made sense, Nia.
I agree about the negativity too. The internet seems to have brought out some bad stuff in people that way. Opinions they'd be too polite to express in front of others they know, they feel free to say on a message board.

*spreads positive vibes*
Chloe, while that's true, the net can also bring out a better side of some people because they can read a post before submitting it and rethink what they're saying. Unfourtunately, a lot of people don't do that.
Exactly, Diva. I feel like maybe he was just trying to get the RENTheads riled up.... which is probably what happened.
*enjoys positivity*
Oh, don't get me wrong, I LOVE the internet. But it does have that one drawback.
Sometimes I feel like I spend half my time erasing what I wrote and starting over. I guess that's why I'm behind a lot of the time.
It can also bring out the worst side of people, because when someone isn't there face-to-face, you don't feel the need to censor what you say as much. While I don't think my personality changes, I think I express things in writing in a way that I never would in person.

I make more sense in type, I think. I suck at speaking coherently.
Emcee, are you sure that's a bad thing?
Same here, Emcee. And same here, Nia!
(responding one post back) I think the RENTheads did pretty well for themselves. It was the haters who came off badly at times. It's probably more complicated than that, but that's my general feeling. Margo wrote a very long, well-written post about how he (?) and his friends couldn't get into it because it wasn't a true reflection of the East Village they knew, or its music, and that was what I responded to.
I don't think it's bad, necessarily. I'm saying that I don't like it particularly about myself, but I feel like when you're having a productive debate, at least, it's important to be honest. Sometimes I just dislike my honesty, especially when I get into board fights, related to things that are very important to me.
... think about Raul.
Chloe - Margo is a male, yes. He's so eloquent, and has given great thoughts on RENT before. It's understandable, I think, but I don't think I've ever seen him make a disparraging remark, which is very admirable.

Margo is a wonderfully respectful and well-informed poster. I had a similar PM conversation with him about Rent quite a while back and while he didn't care for it at all; he always explained himself and never stomped on the show.
Emcee, some of your board fights get bad because you're arguing with morons. Ignore the stupid people, they are not worth the effort.

Yes, but some of those people have been anything but stupid.
I think I know what you're referring to about Raúl, but I didn't see that whole thing. I try to avoid fights, because they seem to devolve into name-calling at the drop of a hat, but maybe I'm just a sissy.
