QM - should I bother asking how many times you saw it in London? Or is it a secret just like your AIDA escapades?
I was really very close! I had a friend who was doing a PhD in Belgium and so I was spending my summer there visiting him, and I had my train tickets to London and everything, but the visa issue was such a headache so I cancelled the trip. I'm still kicking myself about that! Did the London Mimi play the role differently, or are you just speaking generally about her voice vs. Daphne's?

Here's a bit of RENT Halloween humor, if you guys are up for it...
If you've never read a humorfic before, believe me when I say this is a genre, there are other ones out there, and I mean no disrespect to RENT in writing this.
The Haunting of Avenue B
Amasis, Mimi was played by Krysten Cummings (who's a real nut case in real life). I thought she looked better, acted better and sang better than Daphne. To me, she was the ultimate Mimi package and up to now, I have yet to see a better one.
Krysten was tiny, just like Daphne, but she had an extremely vulnerable and very sad side to her. Daphne was more 'in your face'.
Let's just say, I saw it a few times
QM
NTG, Mimi saying *that's hot* reminds me an awful lot of certain drama club kids...
am I right
"You have a talent for saying memorable things at stage doors, you know that? ::ducks::"
Oh, this must be told. Every other embarrasing story has been told! If you tell your's, I will tell my story of when I first met Adam!
it's not Adam related
I don't wanna thread jack
Thread Jacks welcome!

I'm interested...
QM- Thank you. You never fail to make this thread more interesting, I owe you the same compliment.
Hmmm... well, last November my drama club got some kind of special deal to go see this tour of this show I had never heard of. I thought, 'for fifteen bucks, who cares? Even if it is the rear mezz, I'll go' So I did, having no idea what it was. I went with a friend and the OBCR was playing in the car on the way to the theatre. All I really remember was Light My Candle. So I went, I saw, I absorbed. I think I said about five words that entire evening following the show... I was just processing it all. The characters were a lot like people I knew; same personalities, and it just really hit home for me. It felt like it wasn't just about a bunch of people in a musical, it was about me and people I cared about. Rent did something different for me... and I had to learn more about it. I got the OBCR and Adam's voice jumped out at me immediately.
Wow, long. Sorry!
QM- about London Rent, how was it recieved? I vaguely remember hearing that people just wrote it off as a stupid American thing.
Oh, I think we would enjoy both. If not, its your choice!
Ok, but I warn you it's VERY embarassing on my part:
Jeff Marx after Q (I choose this one cuz it has SOME redeeming quality)
2nd Q trip
As I was walking out into the lobby I see this guy and he looks kind of familiar. I do the rude thing and stare at him trying to figure it out and when he looks at me I realize:
"Omigosh! Did you write the show?!"
He replies “Yes I did.”
“Could you sign my program?! [Gasp] You’re Jeff Marx!”
I swear I said it just like that, just like a groupie
And then my mom, who was behind me, said how this was our second time seeing the show and then I mentioned to him that her new favorite song was Racist and then Mr. Marx asks me “So what’s your favorite song?”
At that moment all the titles pop into my head simultaneously (Purpose, Porn, Fine Line, SF, It Sux 2b me, etc) and I’m ummming like a moron so I said just to say something
"You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want When You’re Making Love"
In one breath. I’m shocked. He’s shocked. And my mother’s life probably flashed before her eyes.
So I try to backtrack and cover up this slip by saying something like
“Well it’s got a good beat and a catchy tune, it’s just hard to watch, blahblahblah…” (btw: Loud is NOT my favorite song at all!!!)
Then I mildly recover and tell him honestly that my favorite song is Fantasies Come True because it’s sooo sweet and
he said “Yeah I like that one too”
and then I opened my fat mouth and said
“Well you wrote it”
Lord, will I ever learn to shut up!!! But then he wrote in my Playbill: “To H_____, Fantasies Come True! Love, Jeff Marx : )” Smiley Face and all.
So there you have it. My one chance to show an Avenue Q creator how much I adore the show, I practically skrew up my chances by talking like an idiot, and he forgives my foolish ways and writes me a sweet inspirational quote from the show.
And adds a smiley face
editted because I can't post my name

Oh, wow... that's awesome that you got your playbill signed by the writer... but being embarassed sucks. If it's any consolation, you'll probably never see him again and he won't remember your face anyway. It's ok.
yeah,
but lord forbid he remembers me if I audition for Kate Monster
and that's nothing compared to the embarrassment of the other story...
but that's for another time
thanx sommy
Great story. Don't worry about it! 1.) He won't remember your face. 2.) you got an awesome message written to you on your playbill by the writer!
What a great story!!
Insomniak, Rent was probably one of most anticipated shows ever in London. I remember seeing other shows in London and a lot of other performers telling me to watch out for Rent and how much they wanted to be in it... so I was ready for Rent to arrive.
So I went to see it without having listened to the OBCR and didn't get it!!! I was like 'that's it?' *long story why I though that but don't want to bore you too much*. I remember how annoying I found Anthony Rapp and our original Maureen (who was actually fired three weeks into the run), but Thank God, I returned to give it another go and started getting into it. I didn't even get Adam first time around!!!
Rent didn't do well in London at all, British audiences never got it, although all British performers thought it was a gift sent from Heaven. It took me a few shows to really start warming up to it too.
QM
How long did it run?

Thanks. That's kind of what I heard, except Adam thought that none of the British actors 'got' it.
I actually did not like Rent until I heard Goodbye, Love. It seemed pretentious and self-righteous until that point... then the characters realized it and they got off their soapboxes. Then, looking back on it all, I could appreciate it more.
Why did Maureen get fired?
Maureen got fired because she was that bad! She was totally miscast and was just 'wrong', the producers realized that in the end.
Rent ran for just about one year (with very poor figures) and is occasionally touring the UK (with very bad productions and casts that make you want to stab your eyes out!)
EDIT TO ADD: Touring (Thanks TGIF)
QM (who likes putting things in brackets!)
I'll assume that was a typo and you mean "is occasionally TOURING the UK"?
Thats such a shame because it is such an amazing show.
Hi guys! Wow you don't post for a few days and you've got a lot of catching up to do. I just wanted to say Happy Birthday Adam, and I finally ordered Civillan today. I can't wait!
I didn't exactly fall in love with RENT the first time I saw it either. I had a lot of problems with the book, especially. And even though I could see where they were going with that ending, I just didn't like it. But I loved the music, and I thought the energy in the theatre was just breathtaking. The best part was the vocal performance of the cast: Adam, Jesse, and Gwen especially stood out for me.
Sorry to go WAY off topic here, but I need some advice for all you AIDA experts (sort of on topic, I guess b/c Adam was in AIDA):
I'm singing "My Strongest Suit" on Wednesday for a talent show/audition thing, but I have no idea how to choreograph it. What was the choreography like in the show?
Just wanted to let you know that there's now another Adam show at Joe's Pub, on November 27 at 7pm. And from what I've heard, there's no age limit for shows before 11pm.
