The Official Torino Winter Olympics Thread

Jane2, I definitely see where you're coming from. For some reason though, it still seemed a lot better (even with the falls) than the men's programs (with the exceptions of Sawyer, Savoie and Lysacek).
It's funny, when I look at any particular skater, I imagine the type of music I'd like them to be skating to.

OH yeah, the music has so much to do with it, and of course the choreography and how much emotion is there. Arakawa won, it seems, because she didn't fall. I didn't find her skating to be all that graceful or remarkable in any way. Irina has been better and more exciting in the past. We know what happened with Sasha, it's unfortunate but not that shocking. All in all, a bland evening, that's what I thought.
I actually enjoyed the men's evening more.

Posted: 2/24/06 at 11:38amAlthough Arakawa skated cleanly, there was not one number performed that swept the audience away with sheer emotion and enthusiasm that would make them want to give a standing ovation by the end of the performance. Those performances are very rare, and how this Olympics was just needed for one of those to take place.

Alas, that tape along with my PBS Torville and Dean special are lost forever. Someone taped over both of them years ago.

I thought the whole Ricky Martin thing was TERRIBLE. I kept saying, "I don't get this!" And my husband kept telling me, "It's just time to party. You're not supposed to get it."

Posted: 2/26/06 at 11:53pmRicky Martin was terrible, but that didn't really matter. Sam Sullivan is my mayor (in Vancouver) and it was really cool to see him *wave* the flag at the ceremonies. I can't wait until 2010 it will be awesome

Sam Sullivan is an amazing person. The piece they did on him was so touching. He has a wonderful sense of humor, too. What an inspiration!

It was.
I enjoyed his interview with Al Roker on the Today Show on Friday. Such an inspiration.

He did two songs. I only heard the first one. I kept the mute on during the second one.
It was bizarre. These women were dancing along with him and they were wearing really trashy outfits with big holes in their stockings. The song had nothing to do with anything and he sounded horrible.
Did anyone see the very opening piece at 7 PM about Vernon Baker? My god, I was in tears for most of it. It made me so proud to be an American because of HIM and the other Black soldiers who fought in WWII in segregated troops. It also made me ashamed to be an American, knowing how African-Americans have been treated by the whites in this country.
I want to write Mr. Baker a letter. I am awed by him, his lack of bitterness and hatred, his joie de vivre and his beautiful spirit. He is the quintessential "hero" in my book.

What did Sam Sullivan say? I missed it.
I'm watching a re-airing of the Vancouver 2010 preview at the Olympics right now. I promise you guys, Canada really is more than Avril, snowshoes and prairies. Really.

Sam said the most amazing thing. "Some people look at what happened to me as a tragedy. I look at it as a career move." While he meant it in jest, they went on to show how he has developed assistive devices to help the disabled live more functional lives. When they said they could have someone stand beside him and wave the flag for him, he rejected the idea and said he would figure out a way to do it. "In the big picture, this is not that big of a deal. I've had to overcome much larger obstacles."
Lastly, he joked about how it might not be such a great idea to send to Torino Canada's "worst skiier" for the Olympics. I must admit, it made me cry. I just get so touched when I see people like him lead such happy and successful lives. It gives me hope that my daughter, who is disabled, will overcome much adversity and do something important in the world.
