I hate that the cameras were focusing more on the "favorites" than the person that actually won the gold. Way to be biased, NBC.
Yay for Japan though.

Posted: 2/24/06 at 12:04amOh come on. Do you think Russia and Japan focused on the other 2 skaters...?
re: The Official Torino Winter Olympics Thread#235
Posted: 2/24/06 at 12:19amUm, it wasn't just Sasha I was referring to; Irina got a lot of screentime as well considering she's a bronze metalist from another country.

Um, I find myself corrected I guess. Then what was the point of your comment?
Edit: And I didn't mean that to be rude.
re: The Official Torino Winter Olympics Thread#237
Posted: 2/24/06 at 1:33amMy point was that NBC always has an agenda with their coverage, especially with the little story segments in between the events and everything. Weeks before Olympics start, they pick out the athletes with the good stories and do heavy coverage of them. Emily Hughes got way more attention than Katie Meisser, who had a much better ranking/outlook going in, just because the whole sisters thing makes for a better story. Don't get me started on all the death/divorce/illness/injury sob stories they shove into the middle of the events. Nothing makes me hate American television more than the Olympic coverage.

I wathced the women figure skating yesterday and I was pleased with the result. Finally won someone who deserved it...didn't fall it was just perfect..
oh, and one more thing I especially liked the performance of the little Hughes sister (sorry I forgot her firstname). It was a pure joy to watch her skating...that face all the time...she just loved being there and give a wonderful performance to the audience and to the judges. She was great.

I'm just disappointed that the OGM winning performance included 5 triples and no 3/3s.
Nobody got 6 triples.
Other than that, it was a great night overall. I just with the medal performances were a lot better. Let's just say Kwan had to work a lot harder for her silver medal in Nagano (maybe even bronze medal in SLC) than Cohen did here.
re: The Official Torino Winter Olympics Thread#240
Posted: 2/24/06 at 7:45amVIETgrl, I was thinking the same thing, considering Michelle fell only once, but ended up with the bronze medal in SLC.
re: The Official Torino Winter Olympics Thread#241
Posted: 2/24/06 at 10:13amIt was a comparatively ho hum evening of skating. Not much excitement, I thought.
re: The Official Torino Winter Olympics Thread#242
Posted: 2/24/06 at 10:27amJane2, do you feel that way because of the quality (or lack thereof) of the programs, or that the event wasn't televise "live" so to speak? As a viewer, sometimes I feel the tension of watching things as they unfold, but don't get so involved knowing that the event as already taken place.

Posted: 2/24/06 at 10:32amHi Dottie, no, live vs. taped doesn't factor in. Of course I was totally into watching last night and glad I got home in time to see the top skaters. I don't think the programs themselves were as spectacular as I had hoped. Sasha's tenacity was the most remarkable thing that happened for me. Even the new young skater from Georgia fell short of her short (lol) last night!

Posted: 2/24/06 at 10:50amO.K. I know that I am a geek and a nerd, but I am really getting into the curling. Just the strategy behind the game just intrigues me.
re: The Official Torino Winter Olympics Thread#245
Posted: 2/24/06 at 10:50amSo...let's just say Michelle was able to perform. Because of the no 3-3 combos in the programs and the lack of emotional spark by the Arakawa, does anyone else feel that Michelle just might have been able to grab the gold?
re: The Official Torino Winter Olympics Thread#246
Posted: 2/24/06 at 10:51amIt just goes to show how difficult the long program is. Plus, I think the "ho hum" has to do a lot with the music they select to skate to.
re: The Official Torino Winter Olympics Thread#247
Posted: 2/24/06 at 10:58amUgh...THAT MUSIC!!!! Awful...save Arakawa and Cohen's.
re: The Official Torino Winter Olympics Thread#248
Posted: 2/24/06 at 11:08amDottie-I'm not trying to convert anyone else into thinking it was ho hum. It's just my opinion-I'm sure most of the skating fans won't agree with me, but that's ok.

I can't wait for tonight's exhibition! It's always my favorite part--skaters are pressure free and can do whatever they want. When I was little I watched my tape of the Lillihammer exhibition over and over and OVER again. Anyone else remember how THRILLING it was to see Surya Bonaly land that backflip on one foot? Or Oksana Baiul's utterly graceful swan. Or Phillipe Candelloro's Rocky routine.
I need to see if I still have that tape somewhere...
