I would, but... I'm kind of scared. :-P
Sweeney is the kind of show that you could see over and over and still find something new every time.

I can't get into Star Wars, but I've seen all the movies (pretty much because my friends thought it was required viewing). I have to admit I like old school Yoda as well.
Ha, I read the Sweeney libretto last night to figure out what the hell was going on.

Yes! Yoda with a hand up his butt is THE Yoda.
And yes to seeing Sweeney over and over and finding something new each time. ESPECIALLY this production. There is SO much going on!
The pills! The sway! The triangle! THE PILLS!
I can't wait to see it again this Saturday! And I have good seats! So...yay!

BroadwayChica, have I told you how incredibly lucky I think you are? Seeing Sweeney Todd multiple times!
Your description of the show ("many, many things...you can't notice with just one viewing") sounds interesting. I can only imagine what a detail-rich show this is, and your guys' reviews are helping my imagination a lot! Sometimes, reading your posts, I actually feel a little chill, a tiny shiver down my spine, a small hop in my stomach - the feelings that I always get when I see the curtain go up at a show. I'm guessing that those feelings would last throughout the duration of Sweeney Todd! So thanks, everyone who's seen it, for allowing me to experience bits of the show vicariously.
EDIT: Seeing it AGAIN this weekend??? WOW. Have a great time! (Then again, how could you not?)

Zyla, I don't know if you've seen this, but you can see a short clip of Manoel and Patti LuPone doing "Not While I'm Around" from Sweeney here: http://www.broadway.com/gen/Buzz_Story.aspx?ci=520333
...if you click on the "Watch Video" part.

I'm really excited.
I just won't tell my mother about it because, you know, she might accuse Mano of being an awful, snippy little bitch.

Ah, you're so sweet, Zyla!! And I really wish I could more accurately convey what this show means to me. I'm not someone who's used to seeing shows multiple times. To be perfectly honest, I can't even afford it! But Sweeney Todd has meant so much to me throughout the years, and I find that this new production is just...so overwhelming. It has reinvigorated my love for theater. So I find myself going again and again, to try to relieve that very chill, that thrill and energy of being in the audience, and KNOWING you're witnessing something truly special.
And yes, I'm seeing it again this weekend. My birthday was in March, so when my friends and family asked what I wanted as a gift, I jokingly said "Sweeney Todd tickets!" Some of them took it seriously; I got 3 Sweeney tickets as b-day gifts!
One of them is for this Saturday (4th row center!! AAAH!) I'm getting spoiled with the good seats. But being so close is definitely helpful in noticing all the little nuances in everyone's performances (particularly Mano's. I honestly don't think anyone else is AS devoted to his performance. They're all fantastic, but Mano really goes all out. It's one of the reasons I became such a supportive fan of his in the first place.)

Wait, I thought she wanted you to marry Mano?
Anyway, she doesn't understand. It's frustrating, but you're at the age where you don't really need her approval for things (except when it involves flying to a different city to see a show, heh). I know that it can still be nice to have, though.

She does, but she's clearly lost her mind. She'll find a reason to dislike him.
I hope we get good seats Friday.

I understand what you're saying about your mom (given your recent experience with Raul). But even she would never be able to accuse Mano of being snippy and/or bitchy. He's anything but. (In person, I mean. Online it's a whole other story. lol)

Sweetsiren, thanks for the link! I just watched the clip and...WOW. He has a beautiful voice and his acting is great! I think he conveys the emotions of the song so well, and I noticed all kinds of tiny nuances, little shifts in posture or facial expression, that added quite a lot. And Patti LuPone just sitting there, knitting, being so blase while love and devotion is being poured out at her feet!
Well, happy belated birthday, BroadwayChica!
Em, I'm sorry about your disagreements with your mom. I think sweetsiren made some nice points.

Posted: 3/20/06 at 8:33pmWell, she doesn't know I've been communicating with Mano online at all, so that's okay. She just has a problem with everyone and she won't leave the Raul thing alone. I mean, she's effectively ruined whatever came out of that night, and now I just want to shut her out and make her stop, because I know a general statement of meaninglessness about my life is on its way!
#2763The Land of Mano, where the violins roam freely
Posted: 3/20/06 at 8:34pmTry not to take what she says personally. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this.

Posted: 3/20/06 at 8:39pmThe last thing I want my own mother to call me is a wide-eyed, stupid, clouded over, drooling, hormonal fangirl who doesn't know what she's doing.

I've had my own crazy mom experiences. Even Mano related. She managed to ruin one of the greatest experiences of my life with her cynicism. She also treats me like a crazy hormonal fangirl (which I'm SO not), and just didn't believe me when I told her about the whole thing. Like everyone else, I say, try not to let it get to you. But I know how it goes.

When my mom's annoyed with me, she sees this as her "fault." When she thinks I've got pipe dreams and should study something else, she sees this as her "fault." When she sees me (for short periods of time) and can let her cynicism go for long enough to see how real this is, she sees it as a triumph; breeding such deep passion in her child.
I said this with regards to what she said about Anthony, which in my book, is obviously even more severe than anything she can say about something less personal, but she's too cynical to surrender herself to anything that's not entirely in her schema of "real world" and "logical" and "practical." She doesn't believe in excuses, or sentimentality, and sometimes, I think even in the beauty of having vivid, meaninful, treasured memories. The trip to Ohio was one of the few "big" experiences that she's been around for lately -- in almost a year -- if you count some things, in several years if you count others. But her cynicism and judgementality, after a while, stop being funny, because they're taking away from the good that I kept from that night.
My mother has watched me grow up chasing after actors. She thought going to the Aida stage door would be "good" for me; I was thirteen and afraid of everybody. And now she's got on her hands an independent child who skips classes to go see the guy she met that night perform because it makes her that f*cking happy. She's looking at someone who flies over 500 miles to see a knock-your-socks off performance, but she sees a giggling child who must have only done it because the performer is drop-dead gorgeous. She can't recognized that I've changed; she thinks it's still all about who's nice on the eyes.
It's so hard. I know I'll come home on Friday and be told to stop acting like an idiot.
I apparently jack every thread. Still!

At some point she's going to have to acknowledge that you are an independent adult, capable of making your own decisions. I'm sorry that hasn't happened yet.
