Let's compile a list of Actresses you believe to be still in contention for a Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Then we will shrink the list down to five.

Wow, that's a tough one. I would say Kate Winslet in FN (more likely for the GG than the Oscar) - but I think the role is too thankless. Hmm...

Natalie Portman was brilliant in Closer, but I don't know if that's a Best or Supporting

Why not Kate Winslet in Eternal Sunshine, then? Though in my ideal world, I'd nominate her and Carrey as a unit. I hadn't seen a couple with so much real chemistry in ages.

Yeah, likely they'll market her more in Eternal Sunshine, or else the votes will be split. (I hope not, because she's such a great actress.)

I think Natalie will be nominated for Best Supporting. Unless they also market her for Garden State, and that vote gets split too.

Did Audrey Tatou get good reviews for A Very Long Engagement? I just finished the book, and there is tons of potential in that role.

notonly will she not win; I seriously doubt she will be nominated. thought she was fine in the picture. But very easy performance for her andnothing special. Itell you; i think Hilary Swank will walk away with it again. She is brilliant in Million Dollar baby.

What a shame there's no "Best Ensemble" award...what with KILL BILL 2, BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, HARRY POTTER 2, CLOSER...it would be quite a competitive slot.

It doesn't seem like there are too many amazing performances by females this year; we can only come up with 5 possible nominees??? I'll add Renee Zellweger to the list (for BJ2), even though I don't think she'll be able to pull off a win. I'm rooting for Kate Winslet.

She was nominated for the first one, why not this one? And who else is there? I'm not saying she'll win or that she'll even be nominated, I was just throwing it out there as a possibility.

Dame, have you seen Vera Drake. It is comprable to Swanks Boys Don't Cry performance. Never a false move. Perfection in every frame. I think she will be the dark horse this year.

I think Bening will win. It makes perfect sense.

-Married to near-legendary film actor
-Already won the NBR award (the first award of many, I predict)
-Acclaimed across the board, even if the film wasn't
-Some say she was snubbed when Hilary beat her (I don't, but some do). I don't believe the Academy would let that happen again.
-Flamboyant, showy, and juicy role. Pure Oscar-bait.

You are right. i have seen vera Drake and thought she was brilliant. I still say hilary has more of a edge to wining. More so because she has a big studio backing her and so now you get into politics. ( not that I want to take anything away from her brilliant performance by the fact that warners will go full throttle in promoting her. She deserves it.)

Yes Hilary has a big studi backing her. But I loved her performance. And as brilliant as Vera Drake was; i fel Hilarys performance is more of a achievement. loved them both.
