re: The Oscar Race - Best Actress

Benning was very good, but the film received extremely mixed reviews and didn't play for very long. I'm sure she will get herself a Golden Globe nomination, but highly doubt an Oscar nod is in her cards this year.

Imelda Staunton, on the other hand has a very good chance of taking it home for VERA DRAKE.

I've yet to see MILLION DOLLAR BABY, but from what I hear you might be right. If the race does come down to the two of them and after you take into account Swank won just 5 years ago and Staunton is considered one of the great actresses of our time, it will go to Staunton.

You also have to take into account that academy voters don't know her and alot of people ( not me) didn't care for the film. When I saw Vera Drake was at a academy screening. You can usually tell by audience reception. And the reception was mixed.

But if she IS nominated, than you know everyone will come out as saying they loved it from the second they saw it.

...I am just excited because it appears as though we are going to have a varied list of contenders this year...nothing is sweeping. Always makes for an exciting race.

The only category where in my opinion there is no race is in best actor. it belongs to Jamie Fox.

re: The Oscar Race - Best Actress

Best Actor is one of the hottest races this year, Jamie Foxx gave a breathtaking performance, but take a look at the other great actors of this year, Jude and Clive for Closer, Carrey for Sunshine, Liam for Kinsey, Depp for Neverland, Leo for Aviator(although he has yet to impress me), Sandler for Spanglish (again, yet to impress me), Murry for Life, and more...lol and please keep in mind some of these movies have not opened yet, so I have not been able to see them, obviously, so alot might just be hype.

re: The Oscar Race - Best Actress

I'm intrigued by all Dame and others are reporting here about Swank. This movie hasn't been much discussed here (I'm in the buz, peripherally, and didn't even get the NY year-end screening invites to this one I usually get). Sounds like West Coast buzz, which is a better indicator for the Oscars. I hadn't realized this piece was sufficiently strong to inspire a nomination, but I'm delighted to learn that Swank has found another role. Brava.

Did anyone see that nasty piece in last Sunday's NY Times, from a female casting director? It basically said Swank needs to play a bimbo action heroine, in skimpy clothes, and real soon, or she'll disappear into the ether. (Forget the feminist issues, I have two words for that strategy: Halle Berry in CATWOMAN.) There was a great letter today which refusted its nasty POV. I was rooting for the Swank MIRACLE WORKER (had tix) which closed before b'way. I think she was unforgetable in BOYS.

re: The Oscar Race - Best Actress

A lot of people this year are locked for nominations: Foxx, Bening, Staunton, Owen, Blanchett, etc.

I think that the following people deserve nominations, but probably won't get them:

Julie Delpy, Before Sunset
Kevin Bacon, The Woodsman
Billy Crudup, Stage Beauty
Uma Thurman, Kill Bill: Vol. 2
Laura Dern, We Don't Live Here Anymore
Tom Cruise, Collateral
Kirsten Dunst, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Jeff Bridges, The Door in the Floor
Nicole Kidman, Birth
Colin Farrell, A Home at the End of the World
Willem Dafoe, The Life Aquatic
Irma P. Hall, The Ladykillers
Sigourney Weaver, Imaginary Heroes
Liev Schreiber, The Manchurian Candidate
David Carradine, Kill Bill: Vol. 2

re: The Oscar Race - Best Actress

If I were betting on the Best Actress Oscar nominations:

Annette Bening in BEING JULIA
Catalina Sandino Moreno in MARIA FULL OF GRACE
Imelda Staunton in VERA DRAKE
Hilary Swank in MILLION DOLLAR BABY
Kate Winslet in ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND

upsets: Laura Dern in WE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE, Julia Roberts in CLOSER, Julie Delpy in BEFORE SUNSET, Audrey Tautou in A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT

It will be interesting to see how the race takes shape now that the golden globes have been announced. Just so weird that they separate it into Drama and Musical or comedy.

re: The Oscar Race - Best Actress

Just remember that there is ALWAYS one wild card performer that sneaks into the Oscars who wasn't nominated for that pesky Golden Globe. Kidman might just sneak her way in for BIRTH along with Staunton and Swank.

Hey, I do too!

But I'm one of the few who really loved that film. I can understand why so many people didn't like it, though. It's a bit too "artsy" for the mainstream.
