Mr. de Blasio isn’t going to say it, but somebody has to: With these acts of passive-aggressive contempt and self-pity, many New York police officers, led by their union, are squandering the department’s credibility, defacing its reputation, shredding its hard-earned respect. They have taken the most grave and solemn of civic moments — a funeral of a fallen colleague — and hijacked it for their own petty look-at-us gesture. In doing so, they also turned their backs on Mr. Ramos’s widow and her two young sons, and others in that grief-struck family.

Firing rank-and-file cops, who blindly follow the orders of their Union (typically true of any industry with a Unionized structure), will solve nothing at all. The Unions will just continue their rhetoric and instructions, regardless of the cops. de Blasio and Bratton are doing the right thing by reaching out to the Unions and trying to mend this broken relationship.

Patrick Lynch and the other union heads should be held responsible, as well. They're doing a poor, poor job of representing their workers.

As the executive of the city, he is to enforce the law, and what better way than to stand beside law enforcement?

A law enforcement that he clearly doesn't trust to treat his biracial son (and those who look vaguely similar) properly?

"racially charged". You wingnuts just keep that one in your backpocket ever-at-the-ready, eh? While I hardly think de Blassio or, for instance, President Obama are perfect leaders, one of the best things they've both done is talk openly and honestly about race. If you don't think that is exactly the kind of conversation that parents of black and biracial boys feel obligated to have with their kids, you're living in a dream world. Or, you know, I'll use one of the favored terms from our side, white privilege.

I can't speak to police benevolent associations, but in my own work experience? Yes, union leadership can absolutely spout viewpoints that rank and file workers don't agree with. Unions are institutions, and like any institution, if you're not careful they can end up just representing their own institutional interests.

Please explain the logic of this to me, Kade.

The police have demanded that people stopped by them show respect, don't talk back, don't object, don't resist. In other words to watch it and...

"be very careful with an encounter with the police"

And that's exactly what de Blasio told his son was the way to behave.

So please explain to me how de Blasio's advice to his son was in any way contrary to what the police are demanding from those they stop.
