Racism is literally built into the foundation of this country, you know that, right? In the sense that, like, two-thirds of the branches of our government are housed in buildings built with slave labor.
The racism that defined so much of America didn't go away with the Emancipation Proclamation. It didn't go away with the Civil Rights movement. And it didn't go away when Obama was elected.
These scars just don't go away after they defined centuries of life in America, after they were codified in laws, after they guided population movement and settlement.
If you think you can say "I don't see race, if you try to make me see race then YOU'RE the racist," and that is somehow enlightened "gotcha" philosophy, then you're just delusional.

Let me ask you something, did you ever hear of the stop and frisk policy. The one that could, in theory have been applied to anyone regardless of background? The one where, even though that was the case a judge dismissed it as racial prejudice because they weren't using it for any ethnic background, only black and other minorities.

The issue isn't profiling, although that certainly is an issue in police community relations.
The issue is whether the cops want anyone they question or stop to exercise due care with them.
And they do.
And all de Blasio was telling his son was to do exactly that.
Now, yes, de Blasio's son is a young man of color, he is also the son of the Mayor of New York, and both of those are reasons why anyone might especially want to tell him to exercise care with the police (not that there aren't reasons for telling anyone no matter who they are to do so), but what the hell does that have to do with the kinds of generalized conclusions you are attributing to de Blasio about all police officers? Nothing.
All it takes is one terrible encounter with the cops in which the person stopped doesn't exercise care with that cop, for things to go horribly wrong. It is not a generalized negative reflection on all cops. it's about exercising caution.
The police publicly want anyone, whether profiled or not, whether being stopped for something they have actually done or even something they are mistakenly or even wrongly suspected of doing, whether being stopped on reasonable cause or unreasonable cause, to exercise care in their encounters with the cops and not elevate the situation to something that could be dangerous for both the cops and the detained individual.
They've said that over and over again. They are demanding that people not resist like Eric Garner or like Eric Garner, who may or may not have been profiled, strongly object to the way they are treated. Doing so can lead to terrible things, for Garner his death. (the real issue in the Garner case is not profiling - although that is an issue which should not be trivialized - but whether there was unlawful force leading to Mr. Garner's death).
So, please, again explain to me the inconsistency between the kind of cooperative response they are asking for from people they are stopping and de Blasio telling his son - or anyone telling their loved ones - to exercise care when dealing with the police.

Interesting that the NY Times Op. Ed. mentions the mayor's comments regarding his "respect and admiration for the New York Police Department", but does not mention his previous inflammatory statements.
