He has every right to 'defend' tradiditional marriage within his church. However, from a civil marriage perspective, his point of view is irrelevant.

Because every Catholic is a pedophile, right?

I'm Catholic and support gay marriage. I'm also not a pedophile. My priest never molested me and none of my family that, until my generation, went to Catholic school were molested, either. It's disgusting to me that some members of the clergy are pedophiles, but that does not mean every member of the church supports them, their actions, or the church's horrid cover-up of the abuse. The actions of some do not dictate the actions of all.

And churches protesting gay marriage in America is ignorant. The federal government is not going to force any church to recognize same sex marriage if it goes against their beliefs. What stake do they have in stopping this? Do they think banning gay marriage will make all gay people go away?

Strange enough, if you actually research the topic, the Catholic Church believes that people are born gay or straight. They do not believe it is a lifestyle choice or influenced by the media/family situation/teachers/that nice gay couple down the street. How they twist that to mean that only straight people can be married and any homosexual act is a horrible sin is beyond my ability to fanwank into common sense.

No one is suggesting that every Catholic is a pedophile, but it's a fact that THIS pope orchestrated a cover up of the ones who are. MANY people were hurt by the molestation of Catholic priests and THIS pope wanted it covered up and those people hushed. This dude should be more concerned about the pedophilia within his own organization than the fact that two committed adults want to have a union of some sort. He should put out the forest fires in his own back yard before worrying about my barbecue.

Pretty pretty please don't you ever ever feel like you're less than f**ckin' perfect!

Of course not! The Catholic church has just built up a long-standing stereotype with a lengthy history of not only cover-ups, but the promotion of pedophilia that goes all the way up to the Vatican. So the hypocrisy of this pope making any judgments on sexual deviancy is not likely to go unnoticed. He probably strolled over to Nollendorfplatz for a beer after his speech in Berlin, anyway. He looks like a leather daddy with a particularly mean streak.

"The actions of some do not dictate the actions of all."

Yeah but the actions of this one bigoted nazi son of a bitch pretty much does dictate how people will think.

Exactly! I've always been against civil marriages. Everyone should have civil ceremonies, carrying the exact same rights, regardless of who is engaging in the union, with marriage being left to the various religions.

This is exactly why I decided not to be Catholic. After 9 years in Catholic school, I have had my fair share of exposure to this type of nonsense. What amazed me most is that my teachers could never defend themselves. It was right just because the Pope or Bible said so. I had to take a vocations class the second semester of my senior year taught by a priest who was an ignorant biggot. That was the final straw for me.

I think I may have said this before but every time I see a picture of this current Pope I get the shivers. I almost expect to hear him offer me some fava beans and a nice chianti.

Like JerseyGirl said - he needs to worry more about what's going on in his own organization before he worries about the rest of the world. He's a hypocrite plain and simple. He's suggesting that it's okay for a man of power to molest a young boy but it's not okay for two consenting men (or women) to marry. Sure, he'll never say that but it's there.

The Catholic Church does not recognize civil marriage, or any religious marriage from any other faith. From their perspective, if you're not married in church by a priest, you're not married. So, he should shut the eff up and focus on getting his own house in order.

The whole idea of the Catholic church being "universal" makes me laugh. If it's "universal" why are so many people ostracized and looked down upon?

My own mother thinks my younger brother and I are damned and going to Hell. Not because we're serial killers, thieves or anything of the like. But because we don't go to church. It doesn't matter how you live your life and what you do. It's whether you go to church or not.

My father comes from a family of 5 siblings, all raised in Catholic school and his parents were what I call "Turbo Catholics". They attended mass every day and twice on Sundays. As a result, my father and all his siblings left the Catholic church as adults (one of his brothers is now an Episcopal priest) and all my cousins, aunts and uncles have been quite liberal (except my brother for some odd reason, he's a Tea Party Baptist). Even my grandmother, still the Turbo Catholic, has altered much of her conservative views, including her attitudes on gays and gay marriage.
