From what I've heard, it's de rigeur at New York Sports Club. And apparently, married men are taking it more "into the open." I met a guy on Friday at a bar who after about 3 hrs revealed he was married with KIDS. No thanks.
The steam room tomfoolery was caught forever on celluloid in "Tales of the City."

Oh, that's not the only celluloid that caught the tomfoolery.
BT... I remember what used to be the Bally's on M Street between 17 & 18th, I believe. Might've been L... the showers were the place to be at 9 am. Not that I was ever there...
I know, Namo. I didn't really think you'd go on an Atlantis cruise. You're much more the RSVP type.
Robbie--yes the 50th Street Equinox. I'll meet you there--we can scare the supposedly straight guys.
iflit,
I'm thinking that the guys aren't 'gay'...meaning, though they have some attraction to other men, they would never self-identify as a gay man and all the baggage that comes along with it. I think they may be perfectly happy in their relationships with women, but like the extra little bit on the side.
I don't know...I say as long as you're not bringing anything home, ie v.d., what's the harm?
Oddly enough, for the guys you just mentioned, it probably IS potentially less destructive to their marriage than if they were having an affair with SusieQ at the office, whose main goal would be to get him to leave the wife for her.
Ain't it the truth!
For the love of GOD, I never want to speak to anyone I ever hooked up with in a steam room ever, ever again.
Except, of course, for my boyfriend.
DayDreamer - I can update you on where not to be now
Too bad I don't live in DC anymore. Seattle gyms are nothing like that. NOT THAT I WOULD KNOW.
Wow, you guys are scaring me. Iflit, is that how you would feel if it were your husband doing some man in the steam room? I think you'd have a slightly different feeling. I know I would...

No, that's not how I would feel on a personal level. I'm monogamous by nature and wouldn't be please with any "on the side". I'm not advocating, but I *do* think that for straight men who cheat on their wives, the point I made is valid in terms of the potential impact on the marriage.
I can't imagine how this kind of thing starts. God knows what I experienced could end up in some serious handcuffs. Indecent exposure to say the least. To each their own though, I say.
But what about the whole disease factor? I understand what you are saying in terms of males and females, and having a husband be with another woman be more difficult, but what about all the sexually transmitted diseases that go hand-in-hand with this sort of sexual freedom type behavior?
I would find that more startling.
'I can't imagine how this kind of thing starts.'
Oh...I know how it starts! I can't imagine how this kind of thing stops!
Wait, I thought y'all are talking about handys. I think someone would need to try pretty hard to get VD from a handy. Or is there more happening in the cavernous steam?
I'm spending too much time analysing this thread.
I find the assumption that heterosexual cheating is less risky than DL cheating (from a STD perspective) to be faulty and worrisome.
I didn't know we were talking about handys (?), I thought we were talking about all of the above...I suppose you can't get an STDs from handys, but its the other stuff that concerns me.
I'm not saying that any kind of cheating is more safe. You will find into STDs no matter where or when you cheat. However, in a steam room, I think there will be less of a chance for the guy to be prepared with the proper protection. Some guy cheating with his secretary will probably be wearing a condom, but some guy sleeping with whoever comes by, will probably not have on. That is how disease is spread. Please don't take what I am saying out of context. Any unsafe sexual practice can result in STDs.

Littlefish, do enlighten us with your knowledge about what goes hand-in-hand with this type of behavior, and please include the sources of your knowledge. Thanking you in advance.
iflit, I think the point LF is trying to make is that it's much more likely that men who are making a habit of hooking up in steam rooms are more likely to bring home an STD to their wife than a guy who's sleeping only with Suzi from the office. And if she's trying to get him all to herself, she's less likely to be sleeping around herself.

And Rath, you base this on what, exactly? Gut feelings? It just seems that what you write would be true?
The question I have:
Do straight metrosexuals really exist anymore?
I don't think they do.

Corine, as a rule of thumb, all the men you like are having sex with other men.
