It's not just for clearing your sinuses, ya know!
It's also a place where men sometimes have 'encounters' with each other.
And what's most fascinating about it is the number of wedding rings that seem to populate these dens of iniquity.
Did you ladies out there know about this?
I wonder if anyone here has ever partaken.

Posted: 6/7/05 at 3:37pmNow now. I'm not trying to ruin all the fun. It's just interesting. Someone remarked about the concept of the 'down low' in the African American community...but I don't think many people realize the amount of white men on the 'down low' at the gym. It's a study worthy of Margaret Mead.

I'm sure someone's compiling the case study right now.

I can vouch for the 51st Street NYSC and the 50th Street Equinox.
I like when they use the hand with the ring to do their business, and the light glints on the metal band like a neon sign saying---not sure what...

Posted: 6/7/05 at 3:44pmAlright when I find a husband, he's going to be chained to me at all possible times seeing as the last thing I need is to lose him to a steam room.

Posted: 6/7/05 at 3:45pmI find this activity with gold bands happens more at mid-town locations. When I go to the ones downtown, same activity without the glimmer of gold. Can anyone say bridge and tunnel "down low".

The gays are getting married nowadayz in places as far-ranging as Canadian provinces, some European places, and of course, Republican Governor Mitt Romney Presents: The Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
What that means, for steam room queens, is that wedding bands aren't as much fun any more.

I was about 13, in the sauna at the gym on a cruise once when this 30 something employee of the cruise line started jacking it right in front of me. I remember being shocked and amazed, and I didn't know what to do. I spent the rest of the cruise dodging this dude. He was the frigging Chief Purser, so he was everywhere. Do you think he wanted me (as a kid) to join in? That's just awful, illegal I think - international waters? - and very creepy.
Great, this thread has brought back a repressed memory, and I'm now afraid of any kind of humidity or dry heat.

Posted: 6/7/05 at 3:56pmAn old saying is, "Women need a reason to have sex, men need a place." Nowhere in that statement is the issue of 'with whom' addressed. Which brings to mind another statement - "Close your eyes and call me Shirley."

That's so funny, when I was trapped on a cruise three years ago (which I agreed to against my better judgment) I spent the only GOOD time I had in the sauna and steam room and harassing the cheif security officer who was HUGE and Welsh but insisted on wearing a Speedo in the steam and sauna.
Frickin tease.

Well...Namo...that's very true. My boyfriend and I wear rings and we haven't even had any sort of ceremony yet.
But you as well as I know that many of us can still tell the difference between the straight and gay ring-wearers.
Ah the memories!
50th St. Equinox, huh?

Posted: 6/7/05 at 4:05pmI was afraid to go into the men's steam room when we went on a trip with the choir, so I went with the girls. Much less scary, until our director walked in. Eesh.

Yikes, Pattifan, it was not she!
I USED to be able to tell the difference between the ringwearers, Robbie, but not any more.
I've lost my touch.
And Joey, I wouldn't EVER go on an Atlantis cruise.

Posted: 6/7/05 at 4:14pmI haven't read the book...is the point that for straight guys it's not really cheating if it's not with a woman? Or is the implication that these guys are repressing their true inclinations?
