Ripley's Game with Malkovich was really good.I've read all the Ripley novels of Highsmith. Pretty disturbing but fun.
It makes me sad that only Law got a nom for the cast, and the film didn't get one at all. I didn't really like what came out that year.
I don't get why The Insider was so nominated. It was exceptionally boring and just not very good. I would have happily seen Matt Damon nominated over Russell Crowe.
Actually, pop, had Cider House and Green Mile surrendered their BP spots to Mr. Ripley and Eyes Wide Shut, I would have been perfectly happy.
Well I loved Green Mile (much MUCH more than Shawshank) and I loathed Eyes Wide Shut so I can't agree with you on that switch .

Crowe deserved the Oscar for INSIDER a lot more than he did for the God aful GLADIATOR.
That said, Matt Damon should have been nominated for Ripley. It's his best work so far.

Jon, I agree with everything you said. Russell Crowe was also my choice for Best Actor in 1999.
But......but......Russell Crowe can't act.
lol He's not a favorite of mine, but I do think he has given several excellent performances.
I love how Rusell Crowe is apparently happy only when he's acting..yet he doesn't seem to act very well most of the time..just my opinion.
Back to Ripley...I really don't think it was that necessary for him to kill poor Peter. Not to mention, there is no way in hell that he could get off that ship.
DRS-
Out of curiosity, what movies have you seen him in?
Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, and Master and Commander...he really hasn't been in that many big movies, I think he's overrated.
With the exception of A Beautiful Mind, I think those are his weakest performances. Don't even get me started on Virtuosity!
Pfft. Hiding behind your username, Broadway86?
...I have no idea wtf I'm talking about.
So yeah, this movie is definitely one of my favourites, everything was just so well done, score, sets, acting, loved it.
Well let me pull the thread back on track
I really don't think it was that necessary for him to kill poor Peter. Not to mention, there is no way in hell that he could get off that ship.
When Peter sees Tom with Meredith, it's all over for Tom. The jig is up. In his mind, the only way out is to kill Peter. He can't allow Peter and Meredith to meet, one conversation and it's all over. He can't kill Meredith as she's with her family. He can't confess everything. He doesn't see that he has any other choice. The conversation he has with Peter where he is frantically trying to think of other options but there are none for him is one of Damon's finest acting moments to date.
