For the NY college kids (re: everyone):
Does your school give tours on Saturdays? If not, can I bat my eyes and make them let me talk to the English department people anyway?
Yes to the tours (anywhere you go), but you probably wouldn't be able to talk to the professors on a weekend.
I think they do - but I'm not sure if they give tours straight through from April. There might be a period of time when they don't give them.
In reference to Em's post down:
The site isn't very clear:
http://www.barnard.edu/admiss/visiting/tours.html#tour
I'm pretty sure NYU only does campus tours and information sessions Monday through Friday.
Okay, so not anywhere. heh.
Fantabulous, are you sure they don't give tours over the summer? I... could swear I took one.
By the way, nia, I found something out that might be of interest to you, since you're looking for schools with writing departments; if you go here and you want to major in something that Columbia has, but Barnard doesn't, there's a paperwork process, but you can major in a Columbia department.

Yeah, I was afraid of the no-summer tour thing. Well, SH*T.
Thanks anyway.

Thanks, Emcee. Do you have any links to Columbia or Barnard's undergrad writing websites? I can't find anything except Columbia's awesome grad school.
When you say summer, when in the summer are you talking about? I think it's more likely for campuses to be kind of dead in June/July, but tours are definitely given in August. You should just called the admissions offices of the schools you're thinking of, since they can obviously give you the correct information.
I've been looking, but I think it's hidden. If I do find the page I'm looking for, though, I'll send it to you, okay? A friend of mine is in the writing program, and she's graduating, but I've been meaning to ask her to give me some more information on it, as well. If you'd like, I can tell you what she has to say.
I looked up information about tours; it's Monday-Friday. It doesn't say they do give tours over the summer, nor does it say they don't. You should call.

I'll be in NYC for other reasons June 8-11 and I thought I'd try to squeeze in a tour, Fantabulous. Not exactly the dead of summer, but school will be out by then.
I'd appreciate any info that your friend has, especially anything regarding the length of the program/number of fiction classes offered. Kenyon College is reknowned for its English department, yet it only offers two courses in fiction. Huh?
I sent you something.
There are people around during the summer, so I'd assume they give tours. Like I said, I'm 95% sure I took one in the summer.

If there will be people around in the summer, maybe I could somehow get the admissions people to get a tour out of one of them for me? Because of this June trip, I really can't afford to go back and tour later in the year.
I'm looking at the writing course stuff. And drooling. I could maybe get into Barnard, right...
Probably.
Yes.
I sent you more.

What makes you think you couldn't get into the other NY schools? I'm sure you probably could, really.
Nia, you should probably just call admissions. They're very nice. Trust me, I've had many phone conversations with them.

I'm pretty unlucky, SD. I might be qualified, but so are a thousand other applicants and there just isn't room for all of us. And if someone has to get the short end of the stick, it's going to be me every time.
I knew a kid who had a 5.0, was our State Student Officer for theatre, took all AP clases, was a great essay writer, very mature, lots of volunteer work and other extras... but he was rejected from all but one of the colleges he applied to, (He ended up at University of Southern California) including NYU. If he can't get in, there's no way in hell that I can.

Yeah, Fantab, I was going to say that as well. You'll probably need to reserve a spot on the tour via phone at some point anyway and find out specific tour times. The admissions department people are generally very helpful and sweet.
ETA: How did he do on the SAT? Anyway, admissions are just weird -- I mean, I got into NYU and this boy didn't, so there obviously is some luck involved, and your luck is bound to change sometime!

Should I have my mother call or can I do it? I'm not really sure who they'd rather speak to. Updated On: 5/7/06 at 12:52 PM
I know that people who walk around thinking "I'm going to get in EVERYWHERE!" are obviously very silly, because then they're devastated when they don't. But, having such a pessimistic attitude certainly won't be of any help to you either.
Nia, you should make the call.

They'd probably rather speak to you. If you're not a phone person, though, I'm sure they wouldn't mind speaking to your mother, either.
heh, Fantab, exactly. Those are the people who f*ck up their interviews by being cocky, which, when they don't get in, is probably why.
I don't think it matters all that much who calls.
