I just thought that while Weisz is undeniably beautiful and charismatic, and played her part well, the part itself doesn't pose much of a challenge - she's there more as a plot device and didn't change or have an emotional arc like, say, Ralph. (Or Michelle, if we're going by people in her category.) She started off as a headstrong, subtly sexy woman, and that's the way she stayed. Michelle, on the hand, put so much depth into what could've been a really one-dimensional character.

I agree, Tiff. Williams's performance is the definition of Best Supporting Actress. She gave depth to a small part, and made eveery glance and line ring true. She understood the character so well, and it shows. I can't even imagine how she managed to do her homework for "the" scene.

Thanks - I was going to go look it up.

It seems the only way you can get a nomination for a comedy performance is if Woody Alen directs it (Mira Sorvino in Mighty Aphrodite, Dianne Weist in Bullets Over Broadway).

I disagree, Tiff. The real challenge of that role was that that character was willing to go to any lengths to get what she wanted. She was manipulative, sweet, charming, devilish, and persistent all by turns. The character had so many layers--it was really more like acting within acting, which is always incredibly difficult. Weisz pulled it off with expert aplomb.

Rachel Weisz in THE CONSTANT GARDNER was extraordinary. The most deserved Oscar of the evening, IMO.

Pierce Brosnan - The Matador (a wonderful little film with some not so little performances)

Peter Sarsgaard seems to be to the most overlooked actor for the year...he was fantastic in both his major leading role (Dying Gaul) and so captivating in his supporting role in Jarhead.

I'll second Peter Sarsgaard in THE DYING GAUL. For those of you who haven't seen it, THE DYING GAUL was written by Craig Lucas who wrote THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA. Peter Sarsgaard shone.

Sandra Bullock shouldn't be allowed to step in front of a camera again in her life. She has played the same role in every drama she's been in. Bland and dull.

And I agree with the poster who said that Bullock is brilliant. I also felt that Weitz was fantastic in The Constant Gardener, though I can't judge whether or not she was deserving of her win because I haven't seen all the nominated performances.

I watched UPSIDE OF ANGER (after the Oscar buzz had started making it's way aroung), and the endire film, I just kept thinking, "DID I watch the same movie as these people?"

I thought Joan Allen was fine. Nothing above a simply good performance. I just don't see the alleged "brilliance."

William Hurt should not have been nominated. No way. He easily could have been replaced by any of the following:

Donald Sutherland PRIDE AND PREJUDICE
Peter Sarsgaard, JARHEAD
Terrence Howard, CRASH
Don Cheadle, CRASH
Jeff Danniels, THE SQUID AND THE WHALE
Steve Martin or Jason Schwartzman, SHOPGIRL

The mixed reviews did it in almost immediately, I think. Shame. I think the cinematography, sound, editing, and some of the performances were award-worthy.

I respect your opinion, but I don't understand that. I think her performance was incredibly real, sexy, and very funny. Her broad, but never over-the-top, scenes were just as effective as her small, poignant moments (the scene with Emily in the hospital). Her reaction to her daughter being in bed a much older man is among the funniest things I've ever seen. A very tricky role, and I don't think she took one wrong step throughout.
