5) Ginnifer Goodwin in Walk the Line (I'm not sure if that's how you spell her last name, but her few scenes in Walk the Line as Johnny Cash's first wife were heart-rending and moving as she brought a life of pain to a small role and doing so, added even more depth and dimension to not only her character but the characters around her)
4) Clifton Collins Jr in Capote (He is simply excellent the whole way. He doesn't miss a beat and like Goodwin, his performance not only adds depth to his character but every single other character as well as the plot itself. He is first-rate, delivering one of the year's best supporting performances)
3) Catherine Keener in The 40 Year-Old Virgin (While it was utterly one billion percent obvious that she wasn't going to get a nod, I was still sad she didn't. She was simply relevatory in Capote and IMO deserved the Oscar for that performance but her comedic turn in T40YOV was hysterical, oddly touching, and really well-done. She was excellent.)
2) Anne Hathaway in Brokeback Mountain (Ten times better than Michelle Williams, IMO, is Anne Hathaway who plays Jack's wife. She is excellent showing how long a way she has come from The Princess Diaries to this breakout performance. She's phenomenal in every sense of the word.)
1) It's too close to call for me so my top 1 will be a tie between Sandra Bullock and Thandie Newton both for their performances in this year's Best Picture, Crash (Newton is simply excellent and if I had to chose, she'd probably be my #1 pick. She is breathtaking, emotional, powerfully strong-willed, and utterly astonishing in her role. Sandra Bullock has come a long way from her Miss Congeniality movies as she proves that she has very finely tuned acting chops in Crash. She is excellent in the scene with Brendan Fraser in which she is yelling at him to change the lock. Bullock is brilliant. Both performances are award-worthy.)
