Well, of course I don't know how it used to be, since my first New York trip was on 2003, but add me to those who will miss the Gaiety next time I'm there re: Things You Miss From The Old Times Square

Between the Astor & Victoria Theaters ( now the Mariott Marquis) there used to be Colony Records cousin Gaiety Records

Now it is a little flea market

The big building next to it is the Wurlitzer Building. That whole block will be rebuilt in a few years

The big building on the corner is the old Hotel Knickerbocker - now an office building. If you go down to the subway underneath, near where you get the shuttle , you will see a door with the word Knickerbocker over it. While it was still a hotel, you could enter the lobby via the subway by means of that door. The door & word Knickerbocker are still there today
