The huge Nathan's on the corner of 43 rd & broadway. It was the site of Tofenetti's restaurant. For awhile, the Nathans there was great for very good fast food at great prices

The prostitutes?
Just kidding.
But, I do understand the loss of city institutions. We lost Como Inn years ago and now Marshall Fields and Berghoff in one year!!!
There was a porno theatre next to the Barrymore on West 47th Street called the Orleans. It was purple, green, pink and every other color you could imagine, and was made to look like a French Quarter whorehouse, and I vaguely remember it had plaster hookers on the balconies. I was never in it, but my god, it was fun to look at.
The Orleans was one of the theaters carved out of the Old Mark Strand on Broadway & 47 th
The main theater was remodeled to death & showed Cinerama for awhile. They than transformed it into a twin with the Orleans being born around the corner. Shades of Bourbon St Beat
It was porno I believe . I remember feeling the theater was so out of place but than again the old Times Square had a little of everything. As much as I love Times Square now, I kind of miss the old days around the Square & Forty Deuce
All Shook Up
(I know that's not what you mean though)
Times square is timeless so if it is ASU you miss, so be it
There was also the Castro Showroom with that big window. The Olive Garden now stands in its place

The Morosco theater. Saw "Moon for the Misbegotten" there, with Jason and Colleen.
The Picadilly Hotel, got rooms there for $22/night as late as the '80's.

The atmosphere. The pulse and a bit of the sleaze.
Surf shops? Bubba Gump Shrimp? The mallification/Disneyfication/sterilization is sort of sad.
I miss the 'grit' that was Times Square. Now it just looks like a mall. Sad really.
The crazy thing about the Astor was they refurbished it & than tore it down.
I miss the picture palaces for sure. Than there were there was Nedick's, the Automats & The Brass Rail to name but a few
The one thing I'm glad still exists there are the lights, the lights, the lights! and the neon signs-I do a lot of photographying there. To me, that's what Times Square is-neon signs.
Oh I miss the Fascination Games place, the small novely shops. I miss the grit the grime and the seedy side of it. THAT is what Times Square is (was) known for.
I loved the porn theatres and the "rough" looking characters that would hang out there.A very colorful experience. NOW I feel like I am in an EPCOT version of New York as seen through cleaned up Bladerunner glasses.
The Gaiety
Ah yes the Fascination parlors. Spent many an hour of misspent youth there & in the Playlands that dotted the area
You could spend $ 10 to win something worth a quarter but the thing was you won something. That somehow negated what you spent to win it. I remember a ceramic table lighter with all 4 sides being playing cards on it
The porno theaters!
Just kidding. Kinda. The first time I ever came to New York was with my parents when I was 13 or so. We stayed at the Best Western Presidential, and right beside it was a porno theater with a big marquis for the movie "Horny Captain Butts." Every time we walked back to the hotel, we couldn't help seeing that. My dad and I still laugh about that to this day.
Gaeity.
(sigh)
Tad's Steaks
Papaya King
Ripley' Believe It or Not Museum
Woolworth's ( it was housed in the old Earl Carroll Theater (above its false ceilings)
Jack Dempsey's
Latin Quarter
The Block Long Billboard over the Astor & Victoria Theaters
The theatres torn down to build the Marriott
Who would miss the Gaiety?
It's only been like a year anyway...
