From my experience, unless you grew up watching The Goonies you're gonna watch it now and wonder what all the fuss is about.
After watching it again last night I thought Sean Astin was the annoying one, not Feldman. Feldman talked a lot but at least some of his stories were funny. It still makes me shed a tear to think they scrapped that awesome pirate ship.

Posted: 3/18/11 at 9:50amIf you've never seen it, it will probably have little to no impact on you now. From my experience unless you were between the ages of 6-13 in 1985 the movie will be lost on you. It is interesting to note though, that movies like this for kids just aren't made anymore. Movies for that age group are so dumbed down now it's hard to imagine there was a time when something like THE GOONIES, THE MONSTER SQUAD (1987), EXPLORERS (1986), I'd even add STAND BY ME (1986) etc were made for young kids.

Hell to the yeah with that sentiment Jordan Catalano. Those movies (and a number more) have a huge place in many happy hours of my childhood as well.
Heck, even dreck like THE GARBAGE PAIL KIDS from that era craps over the movies kids get today. Not that I am espousing that movie, but it really does show how bad todays movies for the pre-teen market has gone (properly went south after they started calling it 'tween' - don't even get me started there!)

God, there are SO many movies that you can add to that list. SPACE CAMP is another one of my favorites that was aimed doe that demographic. Try getting that one made today without one of Will Smiths kids in it who looks at the camera every 10 minutes and says "That's crazy!"
These films didn't play down to the level of preteens and teens and THAT is why they still hold up today. You don't watch them and see them as "kids" movies like you will with every single movie for that age made in the past 15-20 years.
Side note: Brolin told me that they're still trying to get the cast back for a sequel. I find that...odd. lol

Lukaplakia!
Loved that movie, too, Eris. Not as much as GOONIES, but it still has a place in my heart. Corey was great and Winona was just precious.
I also loved HOW I GOT INTO COLLEGE and BETTER OFF DEAD.

Any one know why Astin splits in the middle of the commentary?
Was he pissed that Feldman wouldn't let him finish his Cyndi Lauper story?

He comes back at the end doesn't he? I didn't get to finish it last night so I don't know if I'm remembering that correctly. I got the sense that the rest of the cast may not have had the most fond memories of him back on the set.

The Sean Astin-Cyndi Lauper story on the commentary was just him be apologetic over the whole group's behavior for the 'The Goonies R Good Enough' music video.
The video where Sean basically completes the Cyndi Lauper story around the 2:13 mark (and apparently a lot of people still ask him about that):

"Any one know why Astin splits in the middle of the commentary?"
If it's the same one as the DVD from some years back it was because they started filming the commentary late and he had to leave to go introduce Joe Pantoliano at some event at a local theatre. He apparently did give an explanation but it was edited out of the final cut of the commentary, so it looks like he just peaced out with no explanation.

Jordan, that's amazing! And there have been sequel rumors for decades. Wasn't there talk of a musical adaptation at one point? What happened to that?
Also, can you add Return to Oz to the awesome 1985 films list? It's my personal favorite, right before Goonies :3
