Thanks, pushdabutton, I'll check it out. I've always meant to but never gotten around to it, I have to make a point to see it.

I am just a bit perplexed by the trailer they are showing on tv for this movie. You have Mary J. Blige singing "Just Fine" and the movie comes off as some feel good movie. Lots of bits from Precious' "fantasy dreams". It doesn't show anything dramatic that happens in the movie. The only hint you get that this movie is not all "fun" is at the very end when you hear Mo'Nique scream the name Precious and it echos. It is a really misleading trailer, in my opinion.

I think that commercial is trying to show people that the film isn't all gloom, which it isn't. Apparently, none of the trailers can please you. You hate the film, yet are obsessed with the film.
Maybe you liked the film more than you realize?

Um, I loved the film. I never said I hated it. Nor am I obsessed with it. I have no clue where you are getting all that from. I plan to see it again with a friend.
I am sure the commercial may be trying to show it is all gloom but for anyone not familiar with the story, that trailer is quite misleading. And there are a lot of people not familar with the book or the movie. Now, the talk shows have been showing the more dramatic moments.

Really well made film, but I'm afraid I came a little late to the party for it. The performances, strong as they are, didn't quite live up to the hype. I could understand maybe 1/2 of Gabourey's dialogue, and I'm not sure Mo'nique's performance could ever live up to the expectations that have now been set for it.
I was most impressed with Lee Daniels work with the ensemble. I personally think the film is going to peak early in terms of Oscar wins - but its obviously worth seeing.

MB, I thought the same at first. Actually even while I was watching the movie. I ran to the 1st showing so I could see it before I heard too much about it. What I came out with, as far as the performances, is that they did live up to the hype, but in a quietly devastating way. That was the only way I was able to explain the performances to people after I saw it. I think everyone is expecting the performances to be "in your face" devastating and I know some people are not seeing it because of that. I pursuaded two people who are thinking that to see the film before they hear any more about it.

I think the performances are excellent ungag. The problem for me is that they have been written about and praised to a degree that is unrealistic. Mo'nique's performance is excellent. She'll probably win the Oscar. But I found myself disappointment nonetheless because I think after the hoopla, I was expecting Sarah Bernhardt and Eleanor Duse combined. I think on reflection I actually have some issues with the writing of her material (the last scene especially).
I think Gabourey's performance is more 'quietly devastating' as you write, but her character is largely reactionary.
The film has not stayed with as I hoped it would.

I guess to each his own. I think the performances deserved the praise they got. They were realistic, in my opinion, and not over the top. That's what I found so good about them. I found her, Mo'Nique's, last scene to be incredible. It was pretty "low key" and hit me in the gut. She had to finally talk about what was pent up inside of her character for probably a lot of years and showed how hard it was for the character to confess it with some sort of dignity and to let some of her shame be shown. (If that makes sense!) While not the exact same situation the realism, for me from experience, was there and I was glad that her last scene was not over the top. JMO
The film stayed with me for a few days and I think we will see those nominations. My prediction is that Mo'Nique may get the Globe but not the Oscar. I don't know why, but I keep thinking that. She does deserve an Oscar though. I have seen some of her film performances and this one just came out of nowhere!

I don't think she deserves anything. Her performance, and character, are very one note. She's always angry. Angry, jealous, betrayed aren't very hard emotions to play. There's no subtlety to her performance. Her last scene is her best, but it's not groundbreaking.
I'm hoping Audrey Tautou wins the Oscar for COCO AVANT CHANEL.

To each his own. A lot of my thoughts on her performance are based on being around women like this character and she nailed it.
