re: Thoughts on PRECIOUS?

Oscar nominations galore for this film.

It's possible that some of Mariah's scenes/moments were cut and could end up on the dvd. It's possible. Her scene at the end when she's listening to the abuse that Precious got as a 3 year old baby, was breathtaking...so real, so painful, so deep. And, she didn't utter 1 word.

When her Mom came back to tell her that her Dad died...and what he died from, the entire theatre gasped. Her teacher telling her that she loved her....she knocked it out of the ball park in that scene - they both did! Seeing her Mom for the first time after she had the 2nd baby.....heartbreaking..shocking....disgusting...

An emotional roller coaster all the way through.

It doesn't open here in Denver until Friday. On my way to get my tickets for the 1st showing on Friday afternoon. Staying away from this thread until I see it as there already seem to be spoilers!

re: Thoughts on PRECIOUS?

I cannot WAIT to see this movie. Im always so behind on the movie circuit, so I missed a lot of the hype. I didnt even know about the movie until the stars were on Ellen the week it came out (I was in Georgia that week, but episodes of Ellen seem to be a bit off here in CT). And I definitely want to read the book.

A friend of mine saw it the other night and said it was simply stunning. I think her exact words were "a heart wrenching tale of triumph." I'm hoping to see it this weekend

re: Thoughts on PRECIOUS?

I just got back from the theater about an hour ago.

It is devastating. I suggest seeing it before you hear too much about it. I cried off and on for t he last 45 minutes of the movie. And at the end, I got up to leave and a massive wave of emotions hit me and I was in tears for the 4 block walk home and when I got to my apartment, I just let it go and broke down and cried for a good 5 minutes.

Solid performances all the way around. And everything you are hearing about Mo'Nique is true...plus some. He final scene will rip your heart to shreds. And it is so very well done.

Take lots of tissues. I have to say that the tears I cried at the end were tears of mixed emotions. A very good film that lives up to its hype.

re: Thoughts on PRECIOUS?

I couldn't disagree with uncageg more. I've had time to think about the movie. Okay script, shoddy camera work, bad story. In the beginning, I felt sorry for Precious, but at the end, after every bad thing in the world could go wrong, I felt it was too much and implausible.

I also thought it was very one note. It started out as a nine and ended at a ten. The funny parts were funny, but too formulaic. I thought, "Okay, here's another dramatic scene, there's going to be a funny part".

I felt that I had already seen the movie by watching the trailer. The ENTIRE movie is in the trailer. There are only two scenes I can think of that are not in the trailer. There was no character development. No resolution.

The acting was okay all around. I wasn't entirely thrilled with Mo'Nique's performance. She played an angry black woman. It was stereotypical. Gabby's performance was okay for a newcomer. She didn't do enough. I thought the best scene was when she hit the Latina after calling her fat.

I wish they showed more the dad, or at least explained more. Was he in prison? I don't think the script ever said. Then, at the end, you find out he's HIV positive and dead. I think that's when I lost it, as far as believing the story.

I didn't find it that emotional. The only emotion portrayed in this movie is anger. Everyone is angry at everyone else.
A couple next to us bawled the entire time. I cried more in WHIP IT.

I'm sure I'll be bashed for my thoughts, but whatever. I'm entitled to them. I thought this was a hyped up Lifetime movie. I thought it would've been more powerful had it not been so obvious. There was no subtly in the performances or the story.

I doubt I'll ever see again.

Yes, you are welcome to your opinion of the film. Even if the majority feels the exact 180 that you do.

I just got in from seeing this movie tonight. Wow, what a film. I read the book so I was familiar with the story going in. Very emotional and powerful with solid performances. I hope this film is remembered come Oscar time.

"It is devastating."

My wife and I just returned home from seeing Precious, and uncageg sums it all up. What I want to know is this: who looked at that script and said, "I'm thinking Mo'Nique, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, Sherri Sheperd, and an unknown for the title role"?

I can't find words to do justice to Mo'Nique's performance. I thought it was amazing throughout, then I was totally blown away by her final scene.

Biff, to each his own. Not sure which trailer you saw and what movie you saw. The ENTIRE movie is not in the trailer. And actually, they are being smart not to include certain things in the trailer.

"Very one note". Biff, So I am sure you lived in that situation so you know. (And yes, I know) And you really didn't pay attention to the story behind the dad or you would not be asking these questions. It was all laid out. Maybe you were at the concession stand getting that unhealthy popcorn!!!

madbrian, that last scene hit me like a freight train when I was leaving the theater. It just snuck up on me and I was a mess.

Monique was incredible in the last scene. I was also really bothered by the scene when the social worker comes to the house and she puts the wig and lipstick on. Monique gave an amazing performance.

re: Thoughts on PRECIOUS?

I watched the trailer before writing this post. Every important scene is in the trailer. The only scene that isn't in the trailer is the one where Lenny gives Precious money. That's it. Oh, and scenes with her oldest daughter.

I probably was out getting my unhealthy popcorn and soda. Besides my free tickets, I also get free concessions. Just the perks of working at the theatre!

"Biff, So I am sure you lived in that situation so you know. "

Nope, and no one else did either. Remember, this is based on the novel. Not a true story.

Every important scene is not in the trailer. (Unless t here is a new or other trailer) And I am aware that this movie is based on a novel but the novel depicts true life events. Yes, there are people who have lived this. Just because it comes from a novel, doesn't mean that these things didn't happen. Maybe not this particular story but things like this happened and still do.

They happen. And not just to black girls in the city. Boys and girls of all demographics are subjected to these kinds of horrors.

I go to the theatre/theater to learn-not just to validate what I already know.

I haven't seen the film yet but can't wait to since I read the book when it first came out and enjoyed it in the end. I say "in the end" because I was taken aback at how it was written. You'll see and understand if you pick up the book.

re: Thoughts on PRECIOUS?

I wish I had been as impressed by the movie as everyone else is. I went into the theatre excited by the previews, but I thought it was a good debut movie for Lee Daniels, but overall I found it to be okay.
I thought it had an interesting storyline, but by the time the mother throws a TV set on Precious and her newborn child, I was taken away from the movie.
The acting works very well, but I think the limits of the script limit some of the actors. For example, I thought Monique was wonderful, she had the character down, didn't seem like she was "acting" and was very good in the last scene. However, the character is so one note throughout the whole movie and we are expected to "get" her monstrosity with that one last scene. Too little, too late, IMO.
Sidibe was charismatic, raw, interesting, and heart-wrenching in the scene where she goes off on the teacher. Good first movie. I'm interested to see what kind of roles she'll be getting in the future.
I don't really get the Mariah Carey raves. She's not bad, but she's alright. Definitely not worthy of an Oscar nomination by any means though she'll no doubt be nominated for a SAG Ensemble Award. If anything this movie has is a strong ensemble of actors.
Was anyone else surprised by the lesbian references and innuendos throughout? I felt like we were teased with it but it was never really explored or addressed in a much interesting way. I kinda wish the script had delved a little more into Precious' views of her teacher as a lesbian woman, and what she thought of other women holding her hand, or what she thought of her butch classmate. I found it to be a missed opportunity.
I'm glad this film has touched people the way it has. I was certainly moved at some points, and I will say that the movie does a great job at making the audience feel incredibly uncomfortable by what it confronts you with. Still, at the end, I felt the script and storytelling were somewhat sloppy for a film that has been so hyped up. I know I'm in the minority, and people whose opinions I really respect love it, but this is just my opinion.

re: Thoughts on PRECIOUS?

Precious absolutely comments on the lesbianism of her teacher. She talk about how her mother says that homosexuals are bad, but these women treated her so well. It was simple and pointed.

This is Daniels second film as director. I haven't seen his first film yet. I very much want to as I thoroughly loved his direction of the film.

re: Thoughts on PRECIOUS?

Precious wasn't the best film ever made...or the most subtle. But it was moving and spoke of a largely hidden topic in a way that has touched a lot of people, including me. I'm reacting to it as a film that provided one person's experience (I know, it's from a novel)...but it was still Precious's story and the actors made it come alive.

I know too many people who have experienced childhood molestation (like me, by a babysitter...) and others who have lived in violent homes and been molested by family members.

It's a two hour (or less) film, and can't be all things to all people. But as vehicle that has created a powerful and wide-spread identification and emotional response, it stands on it's own.

re: Thoughts on PRECIOUS?

This is not Lee Daniels first film. This is the fifth film he has produced.

1. Monster's Ball (Halle Berry won the Oscar)
2. The Woodsman
3. Shadowboxer
4. Tennessee
5. Precious

As stated before, this is his second film as a director.

1. Shadowboxer
2. Precious
