I'm voting tomorrow. I'm still a little undecided between Liberal and NDP. I'm currently living in an NDP town, but I'm leaning more towards Liberal.
Does Steven Harper creep anyone else out? Especially in that Liberal commercial where he slowly appears on the screen.

Posted: 1/16/06 at 6:10pmOh, he's definitely creepy (he seems to lack a soul behind those eyes). But I gotta concede, the Liberal commercials are pretty tasteless, and tactless too. It's not a good idea to smear the opponent with such low blows, when your own party's accountability is being question. You should go for a classier route; this just makes the other guy look better.

Posted: 1/16/06 at 6:22pmYeah I'm more a fan of postive campaigning instead of negative. It's unfortunate that the majority of the advertising is negative.

Posted: 1/16/06 at 6:24pmOn CTV National yesterday, they said some Liberal members even went on record to say Martin's commercials were tasteless. I'm still on the fence about Liberal or NDP. Will likely vote NDP since I think Conservatives are the clear majority in my riding anyway, so I'd rather my lost vote didn't contribute to Martin's race.

Posted: 1/18/06 at 3:45pmI usually vote NDP, who have NO chance of being elected in my Neighbourhood but cos I believe it was impt that a candidate be run here and that helped give them the required % of votes to qualify for funding. NOW I am so T'd off with them for pushing their own agenda and thus playing right into the Alliance (AKA Conservatives) I voted Liberal @ the advance poll and IF we still have elections after Harper gets thru w the country. I intend to vote Green for my Social conscience.

But I don't know if the Green Party would serve your social conscious, Sabrelady. With the exception of their environmental policies, the Green Party leans right (they support a two-tier health-care system, for instance). They have more in common with the Conservatives than with the Liberals or NDP; indeed, their party leader Jim Harris used to be an active Conservative.
In other news, I've perfected my tongue-in-cheek tribute to Layton and Chow on my blog: http://ramblingcorner.blogspot.com/2006/01/jack-layton-and-olivia-chow-canadas.html

Posted: 1/18/06 at 6:22pmBlue Wiz- u are correct but @ least they have NO chance of ever putting their ideas into practice whereas the NDP- FOR THE FIRST TIME had a real influence in the policies of the day . Compromise is the essence of a minority government and an essential Canadian trait. Things were working but he NDP hd to be the bigshots and proved to me once again that they do not know how to function in the real world of politics.

I cannot vote yet, however I have taken interest in this election.
Our local candidates came to our school and it was very interesting to hear them speak and learn their platforms.
I was most impressed with the NDP's platforms and Layton in general. I will vote NDP in the student election because I feel like If the Conservatives are going to win, I would want to give my vote to the party that is the closest to my beliefs.
Even regardless of the gay marriage issue, the Conservative party in power, especially a majority, is scaring me. They can justify giving grants to the trades and have no intention of giving, and are against, grants for university. Yet they still want more doctors, although the opposite will happen if the government does nothing to combat skyrocketing tuition prices. Their solution for poverty is reducing GST to 5%. This will do nothing for the poor, and in my mind is just a ploy to buy the votes of upper class Canada. Plus, Stephen Harper scares me, haha.
Those are my 2 cents. Too bad my opinion means nothing.

I've already voted since I was going to be out of my riding (west vancouver/sunshine coast) on the 23rd. It was my first time voting, I turned 18 in July.
What surprises me is that amount of teenagers not voting... I've had to kick some of my friends into going to the polls, you'd thinkg we'd learn from our neighbours to the south that every vote matters, nothing is useless... espically since it looks like Harper will win this one, atleast try for a minority government...
I'm actually living in Ottawa now, about a 8 min walk to the parliment buildings so its really exiciting/interesting, especailly since I'm a political science student here at the University of Ottawa

I only hope now that people will really vizualize what the Alliance ( I refuse to use the Conservative name- I swear that was the reason they absorbed the Cons so they could change their name & image by marriage as it were) rule would mean for this country & there will me another minority.
Question: If there is a monority which party do u think they will form a coalition with? My own guess is actually for the Bloc.

My riding back home is Stephen Harper's and VERY convervative so there is no surprise there, and my riding here in Toronto (Eglington-Lawrence) revoted their Liberal MP, Volpe.

My old riding, Richmond, re-elected a Liberal, Raymond Chan. My new riding, Richmond East-Delta, elected a Tory.
At least Olivia Chow finally won and now she'll be heading to Ottawa with Layton!
Watching Harper's speech right now. Those eyes...empty, sociopathic. When he looks down, they just looks like hollow slits.

Liberals were voted in my riding of Davenport.
Great Jack Layton site, that. I saved the gay cowboy picture and made it my MSN avatar. :)

The scary thing is while Bush is an idiot, I think Harper may be very smart and shrewd.

people are calling harper the "canadian bush"
Its so ironic that canadians have critisized (sp) bush for so much and they still manage to vote for their own doofus.
#45re: Thoughts on upcoming Canadian election?
Posted: 1/24/06 at 2:49amI agree that Harper is very smart and that is the scariest thing. Today was a very sad day for Canada.

Liberals got voted into my hometown riding Bramalea-Malton-Gore.
Conservatives got voted in Peterborough, where I go to school.
#47re: Thoughts on upcoming Canadian election?
Posted: 1/24/06 at 8:22pmJust you wait -- in 18 months, the Conservatives will fall and we'll have another election. Canadians ALWAYS swing back to the Liberals.
#48re: Thoughts on upcoming Canadian election?
Posted: 1/24/06 at 8:24pmI concur. The analysts were saying, "No Canadian's going to want to go back to the polls in a year and a half and go through another $30m election." and I was thinking, what lazy Canadian is she referring to?? I'm there come July 2008!

Posted: 1/24/06 at 8:29pmIt's true we HAVE swung back to the liberals, but this time i think we'll make it this time with out them. All I can say is my riding surprised me, we turned out to be Liberals, but I really thought we'd be a Conservative riding. It was an interesting election non the less.
