Pretty much - but I work downtown, I am sure between the two of us, we can get into plenty of trouble. And, if you stay on the westside a bit longer, you miss much of the traffic!
That would be great! What times are freeway traffic the worst?
Well, it depends on the FW. There is usually traffic all the time, but the worst congestion is usually from about 7:00am-10 am and 3:30-7:30pm. Some freeways are worse if there is a large population that commutes from there. I know the 10 going Westbound is a bear in the morning, and going Eastbound at night as well (I have the reverse commute).
I really avoid anything but the 10 at rush hour when I can, and have always had a reverse commute. Not much help, I know.
So basically most of the morning and most of the afternoon and early evening are the best times to avoid the freeway.
I should see what type of rent to expect in Santa Monica. Is it quite "livable"?
Unless you can find a rent controlled apartment, SM is pretty expensive. It also is pretty congested these days. The places that are affordable are not always that great to be in.
I have a one-bedroom condo that I could rent out for about $1400 a month (it is large for 1 one bedroom). A similar place in a good part of SM would be signifcantly more expensive.
It does have a lot of great restaurants, and is a very liberal city (sometimes called the People's Republic of SM). People pay to live so close to the water.
I have a co-worker who lives there (in a house bought years ago) and can ask her if you want me to.

$1400 a month?? And that's outside of Santa Monica? How old is the apartment? What amenities? JESUS!!
I was quoting what my place would go for I think. I own it, and it has a lot of improvements. Where I live is considered a pretty good city to live in, with its own police and fire. But, not as expensive as SM, Brentwood, Westwood, BH, or some of the other beach cities.
You can find a smaller place for less money, or sometimes, a guest house in the back of a house.

Thanks for the link. Taking a peek over there now.
Tiff, I checked with my co-worker, she did not know of any specific site to go to.
Sorry.
Tiff in the United States on a semi permanent basis.. Oh SH*T!! that's frightening..
Lucky for you, little lady, there are no plans to be in the US this year, unless something pans out with Icon Productions! The bank account is telling me that I can't afford anymore jet-setting hedonism and for me to stay in one place for chrissakes!
My best friend's father is terminal in a Hong Kong hospital now though and she's flying out there in a few weeks (she's not too broken up - long story short, they had a bad relationship and he hasn't written his will) - we're trying to work it out that she can trade in her business class ticket (paid for by daddy) for two economy tickets, and I'll get my ass out there! Not looking too likely though.

Tiff - Santa Monica to Fullerton (or vice-versa) would be a bear. I would think your best bet would be up in the San Fernando Valley, and come over the 405 to Santa Monica. The 405 can be pretty bad, as well (major route from LA to the Valley - DAME HATES it!) but your distance would be a LOT less, and there are some cheaper rents available up there.
Just checked this thread today-yay, Tiff's coming! how about moving to NY instead?

Eep! Is the commute really that bad? The major selling point would be that if I was to get an unpaid internship, I'd have to stay with relatives in Brea to afford it. Is San Fernando Valley..."the Valley"? Is the commute any better from Fullerton to LA (Melrose)?
Jane2, I'd LOVE to be in NY! I was there in October to look for jobs but nothing panned out.
Go ahead Tiff, just give up!
And DG-when will we see you here?
*cowers from Jane* Definitely not giving up - if I don't get into law school and nothing progressive happens in film this spring/summer, I'll be heading out to NY again in the fall to bang down some doors and beg for a menial job. The biggest issue is to find a place that's willing to get me a work visa. I had one potential prospect in October and things were nearly settled, and then he said he'd pay me under the table and I declined. I'd rather not be banned from the States for the rest of my life, thank you very much!

Jane - I'll be there the first week of April - and the big 'to do' is being scheduled for the evening of Sunday, April 2nd - mark your calendar
Tiff - the places you're talking about are big enough to show up on a map. Google LA using the map function, and then you can zoom out gradually to find the relative location of these places. That would help to give you an overall fee. For general reference, Fullerton if east and a little south of LA, and the Valley is north and west. Santa Monica is almost due west on the coast.
I marked it DG-and I haven't forgotten that maybe you'll want to stroll the BBG with me? Give it some thought, I'd love to do it if you have time.
Tiff-I'm only teasing-to show you affection-I realize that NY's the hardest place to get settled in comfortably!

Jane - I'm really hoping to do that - do you have weekday mornings available? And if we're very lucky, we might get Addy to join us
Yes, weekday mornings are my most free times always!
*beams at Jane2's affection* Secretly, I'm such a puppy dog.
What's BBG??
Brooklyn Botannic Gardens
!! I've heard that even though I'm not much of a gardens person, those are must-sees!
Will Hedda still be at BAM in April?
