Not sure how I feel about this
Times Square Redesign Plan Unveiled
I honestly don't care what they do, as long as it doesn't make it worse. I personally thought the blue was weird, and they have to close it to paint it sometimes anyway.
This sounds terrible. The crowding will only get worse, especially as people have to squeeze into smaller spaces to dodge construction.
But if they have to do it, I hope they at least mark off designated crosswalks so I don't have to walk through 85 tourists who are taking pictures in the only logical place to cross the street while I'm on my way to work.

I may be in the minority but I miss a bit of the sleaze.

How will they integrate the water slides if they're going "darker and grittier"?
While we're at it can we get rid of the Forever 21 jumbotron? I really hate having to push my way through a crowd of tourists waving at themselves on the screen whenever I go by the Marquis.
"Hey Martha LOOKY THERE! It is us! You look great in your floral print ski pants! Oh look she is taking a picture of us!"
Forget the jumbotron. Can we just eliminate Forever 21? And H&M while we're at it? Ick.
As for Times Square, it looks like an improvement on what is currently there, so I'm all for it. The crowds aren't going anywhere, so I'm all for relieving the congestion from the sidewalks of years past.
How about we rope off that center section of Times Square at the left side of the TKTS booth, if you are looking north, to the edge of the sidewalk at 7th ave. That way, anyone can still use the TKTS booth, if they please, but the tourists will not be on that side anymore getting in the way. And the beauty to the 7th ave. side is the traffic.
Forty Deuce we miss you.

It must be terrible to be the place that encompasses Times Square, the most visited spot on the planet - 39 million a year, at last count. How awful to be a place so enticing, and have to deal with it on a year-round basis. And, of course, to have to find something to do with the millions and millions of dollars that those unwashed hoardes dump into your civic pockets.
The real tragedy, though, is that everyone is forced - probably at gunpoint! - to have to travel through those 2 1/2 square city blocks that really smother every square inch of Midtown.

I imagine this redesign will make Andrea Peyser of the NY Post furious.
This means that I approve of the new design. I am happy when she is unhappy. This means that I am happy a lot.
Is this really needed? Sure, I mean it may look cool and whatnot in the long run. But, can't the money that is being spent on this project be used to fund other more important things? Like the public schools perhaps?
In a city where there are more pressing issues other than Times Square, it bothers me that the mayor is hiking up tolls banning smoking ( something that isn't really being enforced anyways, but still) and doing other things to earn him some more pocket money. However, can't he just use the excess money to help out those areas that need it rather than throwing it away at areas that do not?
The return on investment from the spending power of 39 million people a year outways any cost outlay.
And as someone who lives near the Theatre District and who is there quite often, it's so much easier to navigate now that I have the option of getting of the sidewalk. The number of bitches I almost cut during the sidewalk years is unimaginable. Now...it's just like a fun game of Frogger.
Even before all this, I usually ended up walking in the street, anyway. I could only visit during summer or Christmas holidays when the pedestrian congestion was at its worst. It was either risk my life with the cars in the street or spend life in prison from a homicidal spree. I don't amble. Ever.
I don't know why people are so against this. Pedestrian zones in Europe have had tremendous success. I love the new Trafalgar Square in London.
If Q is correct, and Times Square is the most visited place on the planet, of course it's worth the cost of renovation/beautification.
