Tipping is out of hand (haha, pun intended!)

I was in the Chelsea Market today, eating some sushi out in the corridor, and I was watching the Italian prepared food counter. All you do is point to what you want, the sever wraps it in tin foil, and you're done. And there's the ubiquitous tip jar.

I'm not cheap when it comes to tipping, but I think this is taking it too far. Has anyone seen a tip jar in a more unworthy place?

There's an Automat on St Mark's Place. You put the money in, you open the door, you pull it out, and on the right there's a guy who hands out napkins, well not hands out, more like points to a pile of napkins, and the tip jar.

I'm all far tipping people and hate people who are cheap, but I agree that some of these examples are ridiculous.
"[Gore] was widely perceived as arrogant. If you know something, you're not smart. You're a smarty-pants. It's annoying. People get annoyed with your knowledge. It goes back to high school, to not doing your homework ... 'There's something I should know, I don't know why I should know it but someone knows it and I don't. So I'm going to have to make fun of him now.'" -Sarah Vowell, The Partly-Cloudy Patriot

"There's an Automat on St Mark's Place."

It should be "Automat" in quotes. I wouldn't want anyone to think that place on St. Mark's was what the real, old time Automats were like.

If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Tipping is for exemplary service. If it's not exemplary, or worse yet, no service has been provided; don't tip. Cheapness has nothing to do with it.

I agree, SonofMammaMiaSam. Tip when you feel it's necessary.

I've seen that "automat" on St. Marks. What's that about?

SOMMS-Do you mean to say an exemplary job of wrapping an already made sandwich is worthy of a tip? I mean, pretty soon every single transaction we do in life will call for a tip. What's next-a tip jar at the bank teller's station? I say YES, that's next! re: Tipping is out of hand (haha, pun intended!)

Somebody trying to revive the cheap eats idea in Manhattan. Unfortunately, their food is not good. I've had a couple of items there that were not fully cooked (i.e. hot on the outside, freezer-cold on the inside).

It's not exactly cheap, either. When it first opened, we went by to see if we could get lunch there. But putting a lunch together out of their offerings would be about as much or more than going to a deli.

They do seemed to have carved a niche market out of drunk East Village partiers looking for a quick bite at 3 a.m., though.

And it's a tourist attraction. I've always felt bad that the automats in NYC had to close. They were interesting for tourists to see.

Forget tourist, Goth, the Automat had great food.

Add to that, you could sit all day with a cup of coffee, read War & Peace & no one bothered you. There used to be a huge one diagonally across from Radio City.

It certainly is!

I remember when I first moved to New York I'd go to the Automat when I was broke because you could get hot water for a nickel, then put in free ketchup & crackers and make your own Tomato Soup.

Wait, maybe that was an old episode of That Girl.

"Wait, maybe that was an old episode of That Girl."

Yes, that was an old episode of That Girl. And that was back in the day when you could:

find an affordable apartment

afford to see a Broadway show or Second Act one without too much trouble

Macy's, Gimbels, Alexanders, Barneys were all affordable

ice cream had real cream, Coke was still made from sugar rather than corn syrup, and nobody was interested in posting calories or telling you that you were going to die from eating fried foods

nobody was trying to regulate your life by forcing you to buckle your seat belt or use 30 watt light bulbs or recyle

I am surprised PRS took so long to play you know what.

It came out of left field but than again it always does
