Tipping is out of hand (haha, pun intended!) — Page 2

I've never understood why it's expected to tip food delivery people really well. It's not as though they're making a waiter/waitress's salary where they depend on tips -- they're paid normal wages, so there's pretty much no way I'm tipping 15-20%. I'll tip a couple of dollars to help cover gas money, but not much more than that.

I'm not sure that's the case here in the city. I have a feeling a lot of those delivery guys are working for tips. They're most likely illegal aliens. I always feel grateful to them because rain, shine, snow, freezing, hot, late, early, they're always outside biking or walking to you. And most of the time in my neighborhood, they have to walk up several flights.
I always overtip them.

That's fair, definitely. I guess it's a little different in suburban/small town settings, where everyone can drive right up and I know they are being paid by their employers. I'm normally a solid 20% tipper for adequate service, but the idea of tipping a delivery person $4 for a $20 order bothers me under most circumstances.

I always tip delivery people very well. I once had a very nice sushi delivery man say "you tip too much," but I laughed him off. I've waited tables, I know people can be douchebags and that there are a lot of crappy tippers, and I figure if I can afford to pay for food to be delivered (including a delivery fee that I'm pretty sure the driver doesn't see much of) then I can afford to tip on the high side.
And I love you, too, Mr. Roxy.

A tip about tipping in Thailand. If you want to give you waiter/waitress a tip you MUST hand it to them directly. When they give you back your change in the leather folder if you just leave it in there that money will go to the bar. So ALWAYS take the money out of the folder and hand it directly to the person you want to have it.

Tipping doesn't exist in Australia at all. Except maybe the oddball tourist who doesn't know better.
Saying that... having lived in the states I did enjoy tipping and good lord, every service person I ever had did earn their tip and I was more then happy to ablige them with a nice one. Here in Oz serving staff completely disapear into some wormhole or rift in space and time once the food had been delivered (and this goes from your normal family resturants to your swanky places - it is all the same).
Without the need to work for tips (in fact the serving industry I have to say is rather decently paid as well, often $17-20 an hour), well without the need to work for tips as soon as the food is ordered they don't bother. Heck I have to say there is often a long wait between seating and drinks as well I have found, not that you don't get a good one or two mind you.
So while people complain about tips, it does have alot of advantages I must say.
Though I agree, a tip jar at an automat is bizarre as say the carwash I once went to!

My delivery people have to climb 6 flights of stairs, so I feel especially obligated to tip well. I felt really bad for the guy who had to carry my window unit up there. And the movers.

Same here my delivery guys have to go up four flights of stairs. I look at them out the peephole, and they always have to stop and catch their breath on the way up the last flight. I usually get a 13 dollar pizza and I give the guy a 20 dollar bill.
But I just had my landlord's handymen fix a shelf in my closet. Should I have given them a tip for that? I gave them glasses of cold water.

I don't tip my apartment maintenance crew, but that's because they suck.
The last time I had to have a (very essential) repair done, they assured me they would be there by 9 so I could get to work. He did get there by 9, but then left to go get a tool -- even though they already knew exactly what kind of work I needed done -- so I had to wait until he got back, which was well after 12.

I picked up dinner at Subway last night and saw a tip jar on the counter there.

Well, they had to go to all that trouble slapping that lunchmeat onto the roll!

The Dunkin' Donuts around the corner has a tip jar and it always depresses me. The people behind the counter seem to always be there, whether I'm there at 7am, 1am, 7pm, 11pm....its always the same two people, and they always look like they are about to drop dead from exhaustion. And the tip jar? Its a big Dunkin' Donuts mug full of nickels and pennies.
The worst is when the line is long, and its yuppie after yuppie dropping their 7 cents, 13 cents, etc in change after their coffee into the tip jar.
