I didn't mean for you all to take it so seriously. I just was wondering if someone could give me some ideas. But its fine. But to prove that I have read the book. I would say..
Prejudice - racism is key in the book.
Childhood - Jem and Scout growing up together and understanding life.
Love - The way Atticus is towards his children.
Revenge - Mr. Ewells "revenge" on Atticus from the trial.
are some of the key topics.

"I didn't mean for you all to take it so seriously."
See, kids, you shouldn't have given her such great ideas!!
Okay!
So, what are songs that you know and love that are about those themes you mentioned?

To get serious - if only for a brief moment....
I am VERY familiar with "To Kill A Mockingbird" - the book, the movie, the play. Yet I find myself unable to answer this question because I am terribly UNfamiliar with very many songs. I know the themes I would want to cover but I wouldn't know how to get there. Is there a search engine request that would let you query lyrics by theme?

There's always - "Jem is truly outrageous! Truly, truly, truly outrageous..."
Seriously though, tl45, you can do this! Pick a song from each theme you've outlined here.

I think perhaps you're just afraid to take a stab at it (seriously).
It's kind of a fun assignment, actually.
There is no one song that will encompass the book, so you have to look at aspects of it that are reflected in songs. I'm sure the teacher will want to know WHY you made your choices, and that's how he/she can tell if you're comprehending what you're reading.
I'll give you one that came instantly to mind.
"Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?"
It doesn't nearly cover everything to do with this story. But that song jumped into my head, because of the Great Depression. It takes me back to the late '20s and '30s and puts me in that "struggling" time. So I would justify my choice by saying that it's an era song, chosen to capture the hard times these characters were living in.

Posted: 8/13/07 at 5:43pmI would easily be able to do this if I was familar with different kinds of music and songs. I only listen to the radio and half the time I have no clue what I am listening to. I am not asking anyone to do it for me. But I understand, It was stupid to ask anyway.

Posted: 8/13/07 at 6:11pmI read the book in 10th grade for school and we had to create AIM profiles for 10 of the characters (amoung other projects) I quoted The Dark I Know Well for Mayella's profile and Doin What Comes Naturly for Bob Ewells... I don't know how much that helps though.

Ummm, I hope you do realize that the last several song suggestions are both very real and very appropriate. (directed to the original questioner of course)
"Supper Time" gives me shivers just thinking about it.
Great suggestions.
Fantastic book, easily one of my favorites as well.

An American masterpiece, no doubt. I hate myself for not being interested when I read the first chapter. Once I got beyond it, I was hooked, and loved every moment. It's so wonderful to see others loving this book (at school, everyone enjoys hating the required books).
Laura...you weren't stupid for asking, you've gotten some great help on here! If you wanted, you could also listen to the radio for a few hours and write down songs you feel inspired to use for your report...it's worth a try if you'd like to go down that path.
