*This is just a rant at the moment, because I LOATHE my school's theatre program*
At my highschool, were stuck with having one of the WORST theater directors in the world...and to top it all off...she chose as this year's musical to be...you guessed it...High School Musical! Not to MENTION the woman decided to do 'It's a Wonderful Life' as our play for this year (which made me really excited) but then out of the blue turned into a radio show. Thats right, a radio show. So all the actors did was stand in front of a microphone and say there lines. No movements or anything. She completely ruined it. Just...grrrrrrrrrr~I hate my school's theatre program and the director. Evil woman, end of story.

Posted: 12/26/06 at 10:30amOh man- you guys are killing me! We're doing Sunday in the Park right now! And I'm Dot! Don't worry, though. I swear it will be good, really. We have a crazy amazing department even though we're just a non-performing arts public school.

One of our directors told me flat out we will probably never be doing Les Miserables.
So my friend (male) and I who were discussing future shows choices got sarcastic and started walking away talking to each other, somewhat loudly:
What's next? Never doing RHPS!? Phantom of the Opera!? Spring Awakening!? And what about La Cage, it's a masterpiece!
I agree! Plus the dresses are to die for...
Oh don't get me started!
But couldn't we get in some kind of trouble for that, with it's, theme and all?
Maybe, but of wait! We're in Am-er-ic-a.
Oh, right! sweet.
Haha, I don't think she heard any of it, but it was fun nonetheless.

I agree with the few people who have said it does depend on what your theater department is capable.
My junior year of highschool we did SWEENEY and it was INCREDIBLE. Just happened to be the right fit for the talent we had. It got rave reviews around the area.
or course we did Scarlet pimpernel following it which is also a pretty mature show.
so needless to say she had to pick a kid friendly show after, i got stuck with SEUSSICAL my senior year. blah.

People please don't kill me, but MTI is publishing a High School version of Rent.
I know because I was in their second reading of it in New York, we learned the show in seven weekends and then performed it in a small theater for family and the producers of the Broadway show. It's pretty good. Contact is cut and the language and there's less language but overall it told the same story and had the same message. Our cast was amazing and even though it was just a sit-down reading it was almost creepy how good it was. It may not be the last version of it (they cut a bit of light my candle so mimi doesn't specify her age, since it's all played by teens anyway).
My HS is doing Cabaret this year. We have gone through all of its reincarnations, pulled them apart, and came up with something a bit like the '87 revival on the '98 stage.

I also agree with all believing High School Musical is bad for a high school, or anyone who didn't produce the movie. Thank goodness my teacher hates the idea!
*brina-doll* i am sorry about 'it's a wonderful life'. how boring for the audience and the actors, besides there would be no room for techies.
i still think high school should not do Rent, and i will stand by that until i die

Posted: 12/28/06 at 5:07pmI agree with what some people have been saying about how it depends on the school. There are some shows that I know in my heart should not be preformed in HS, but I always end up thinking "oh what the hell" because I think of what the students could learn and I wish I could do (Even though I know that not everyone in my schools theater program is like me). I mean my school always wants to do really un-HS shows, but we're really under funded and the school bord hates us so we get to do stuff like "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" (Which I love, but sometimes I wish we could be alowd to think a little bit more outside the box). So I really have some issue with restrictions on what HS's can do, because as someone who is planing to keep doing this, and has never really had the chance to do darker material in school I wish more "kids" my age could have that oppritunity in schools.

Posted: 12/29/06 at 6:15pmhas anybody thought about if these shows could be done in community theatre and still be good, because, i love many of these shows but only did community theatre once before. the reason i ask is because of what withoutlovewithoutU said. we as students need to do more than what high school can offer, especially if we want to do this professionally. so any thoughts?

1. The Full Monty (although CCM is performing it, and I'm considering driving the 45 minutes to go see it. I'm in love with the show!)
2. Oh, Calcutta! (both of these for nudity)
3. Reefer Madness (Could you imagine this one?)
4. See What I Wanna See (Let's face it, subject matter is too adult)
5. Avenue Q (Even though they may be cute puppets, you wouldn't have a show after you edit all the content)
Someone mentioned that shows that are currently on Broadway shouldn't be done... In most cases, the rights aren't released so they can't be done. And I've seen amazing versions of some of the shows mentioned done by high schools. Personally, I think any show can be done justice by a cast of high school students. However, some shows shouldn't be touched by high schools because of subject matter. Sure, we might not want to see Wicked being "butchered", but it is a great show for high schools because of a great subject, relatively no editting, and also marketability. If a school has the talent to pull off shows that are "difficult", why should they stoop to a level below that of the students and not show off their students talents?

A Chorus Line and 42nd Street because of the number of people who need to sing and dance at the same time and be great at both.
Sweeney Todd and Avenue Q because of Adult Content.
And See what I wanna See because its just plain awkward...

SPRING AWAKENING
...actually, that'd be interesting to see at a high school; for all of the wrong reasons, though. Not that it would ever happen.

Hmm...I was IN A Chorus Line. During high school, nonetheless.
It was actually quite wonderful.
And I'm a very critical person, whether or not I'm in the show.

Posted: 1/6/07 at 9:03pmOur school has done Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, Assassins, and we were asked by MTI to do the Premier of Aida: Student Edition, and performed in the National Thespian Festival 2006 and we also performed Sweeney at that festival it was well liked, these are difficult shows and i find it ironic that you say that these shows should stay out of High School. Everyone should be given an oppurtunity to do shows with meaning and depth.

There are certain shows I feel should never be done in a high school but with talent and money, nearly anything can be done. I am very, very against The Wild Party (either versions) being done in a school, and Grease as well. Grease isn't very good to begin with and most schools do the movie-version which drives me up a wall. The 'Jr.' version shows are mostly for Middle Schools. Want to hear something funny? They have one for Godspell. An excellant show, but in a middle school?
However, our high school did The Pirates of Penzance last year and it was fantastic. We definately had the talent and the funding (though we never get too much) and produced a wonderful show. We didn't pre-cast the two leads as that's just wrong, but the director most definately had them in mind when he chose the show. As long as the director knows what talent they have, nearly any show selection is appropriate.
Although Sweeney Todd or Follies or Baby in a school is just... wrong.

okaaaay.
1. High School Musical (it must die.....)
2. Grease (why does everyone like it? I don't know. It's not very good)
3. The Apple Tree (this show takes a certain something to come off right. Amateurs aren't it)
4. Meet me in St. Louis (though in my opinion NO ONE should ever touch that musical. It sucks)
5. Jekyll and Hyde (unless you have the talent pool. Otherwise, forget it. The roles are too demanding)
Now here's what I'd LIKE to do at my high school...
1. Jekyll and Hyde (I know, I know. Sad part is we don't have the talent pool)
2. Sweeny Todd (Ditto. No talent. And the administration would murder us if we got blood on their new stage, which is already thrashed anyways due to the talentless regional symphony dragging their gunk in and out every couple of weeks)
3. Gypsy
4. Little Shop of Horrors (Although we did that a couple years ago. I just wasn't old enough to audition)
5. Pippin
