At the National Thespian Festival last year, a school from Wisconsin (thinking it was Bradford High School or something like that) performed Sweeney and was BRILLIANT. I honestly cannot say enough about how amazing that production was. The principals were all brilliant, the ensemble (which was around 40 or 50 people I think) was all absolutely amazing... the production itself was incredibly directed and didn't follow the conventional Sweeney production values. Something that I would have expected to see in a top regional theater/possibly in NYC. AMAZING.

Of course, I know it would be terrible, but I would pay good money to see a high school do LaChiusa, especially Marie Christine, though I'd feel horrible for the person playing Marie; they'd probably ruin their voice forever by trying to belt out "Tell Me" like Idina Menzel.

I just hate it when high schools - especially those that aren't very good - try to put on really big shows. Even my high school, which has an incredible theatre department, would never ever attempt something that ridiculous because we have a sane director who's not going to try to pull off any of the above. Thank God.

A school in my area, Bradford High School (Wisconsin), just did Aida, and did an amazing job. All the actors were wonderful and the singing was great. I believe they were asked by Disney to do it.

our school did les miserables back in '03 and it was amazing. it reassured me why i do theatre. i agree with most of the shows that people put (especially things like wicked and hairspray), but there are some surprises out there with what schools can do

Johnny-My school did Beauty and the Beast this past year and it was fine. It turned out really well we sold out 5 of the 6 performances. A school by mine did Les Mis a few years ago and I loved it. It made me fall in love with the musical. Here's my list:
1.Rent
2.Wicked
3.Aida
4.Sweeney Todd
5.The Lion King

Almost any really mainstream broadway. I dont think High Schools could do them justice, especially the ones with lots of special effects and sketchy themes

1. Wicked -NEVER EVER the vocal performance is FAR too demanding
2. Rent- the character development is too demanding
3. Spamalot- kids at that age cannot pull off the humor
4. Phantom of the Opera- only if the talent is actually there christine must be able to hit an E above the staff-extremely difficult and the phantom hits 3 octaves.
5. Full Monty-come on!!? wayy to innapropriate!! ha,ha

my school has done all of these i believe in it's 37 year theatre department history, and my school has an outstanding theatre department, one of the best in my state.. so i imagine they were fantastic.. just wondering.

also, ChrisLK, why not light in the piazza? as long as there was someone who could pull of the italian, i don't see a problem really? there are quite a few high notes; however, there are many many incredibly gifted singers at my school, who can hit ridiculous high and low notes. i guess it just depends on the people.

i would NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER want to see a school do any current popular musical, it'd be too overdone, and judged too much.. i think you get what i'm saying..

Oh God. I shudder to think....high schoolers trying to build puppets...
Or worse, doing it without puppets.

At least it will never happen because of a few...aspects...that may not be quite appropriate.

and I don't like Les Miz in high schools. It's really hard to do it justice. You can't blame them

My High School could probably actually pull off most of these musicals (then again, it is the "Fame School").

For Phantom, most schools with a decent vocal music and theater department could pull it off if a school edition were to be produced. The sets are actually a lot simpler than they look, and some of the set pieces, like the Masquerade staircase, are totally unnecessary.

I want to make it clear that I like these shows unless otherwise noted by *.

1. Rent- someone would destroy it, either director, actor, or school board.
2. Lion King- Most of those actors are professional dancers, and only 5% of my school can dance.
3. West Side Story- cliche, hard on orchestra, so you better have a D*** good orchestra and conductor.
4. High School Musical- too cliche* (not huge fan of just Zac, it's a Summerland thing)
5. Phantom- I mean, come on, it's hard to pull of that show as it is, musically, and a school cuts it for budget or whatever? Death to fave scenes! MUSIC OF THE NIGHT!

I'm going to stick up for Les Mis, I saw it at a local high school, and it was really good.

Beauty and the Beast is one I would want to do, but not cast, because everyone and there kid sister is going to audition for Belle, and they've probably only seen the movie which is different from the stage production! My school is doing it next year though, so SCORE! I'm one of the few girls not auditioning for Belle, I'm auditioning for the Wardrobe! (hence my username) YEA! That whole Prima Donna, random high note thing is right up my alley. Speaking of which does anyonehave a performer/prima donna monologue? If so see the thread I set up.
