"I didn't realize you weren't permitted to not think that Burstyn's performance wasn't the Second Coming".
And who's stopping you from not thinking that? I simply asked you a question. I think you have a chip on your shoulder. 'nite, PJ

There is no chip. Some posters, they know who they are, like to pretend their opinion is invaluable and superior to all others.
Don't we all think that about our own opinions?
Rubbing alcohol, for you, Jerby?
We are all allowed to "fight" for our opinions--as long as we respect each other, which had been the case in this thread until lil Miss Petulant (feeling wounded enough) had to stop the flow of a common debate.
"If you can't hunt with the big dogs, get on the porch with the pups."
It's I am the EARTH MOTHER, not Mother Earth, you big silly. But anyway, nice Pussy.
So Jerby, did you see Closer?
Poppy--depends on which revision. We are both correct.
Darn that Albee!
But, Earth Mother is most common, so I shall defer to you--proof that my opinions are not always perceived by self as superior. Invaluable--always.
And driving this train back to the topic, Huffman would make an AMAZING Martha!
If I'm Mother Earth, thanks so much!
Sorry, Jane:
I thought all 4 actors were great in Closer. I think Natalie and Clive have the showier roles, hence awards and nominations glory.
Natalie is destined to be considered a great actress, I think. And, Clive--that sexy man is a very good actor.
Thanks. It's true, the conversation HAS migrated from Transamerica so please carry on. I do have a tendency to become interested in tangential themes on threads, sorry.
Anytime we can have an intelligent discussion about acting, the threadjack is welcome!
AND--Taylor's Martha is definitely in the Top 10 greatest performances on screen.
OK, you said the magic words! I was thinking about what you said last night about what acting is-how it's not on the surface, etc. Very interesting. I like to think that I'm not using surface effects as my criteria in judging performances. It sounds cliche, but if the character is "believable", with or without surface help, then that's all I need. I'm going to use Scarlett as an example. In Lost in Translation (one of my all time favorites) I believed her character, and I loved her in the film.I was totally transported into their world. I also liked her in Ghost World. But in Match Point, I didn't think she nailed that person. All during the film I was questioning her character, and it brought me out of the film. If that happens, I think the actor isn't totally within the role.
Just to threadjack back to the film of Closer, I have to say that I really think Julia Roberts was the standout of the main four roles. I think it's a bad adaptation (Marber only has himself to blame) and I have never thought Clive Owen could act and neither Portman nor Law really dazzled me. Having seen the play numerous times, I was nervous how Roberts would handle the centerpiece argument with Owen that ends with the line "like you, only sweeter" having seen other, more established actresses take on that scene and fail (yes, Natasha Richardson, I'm talking about you). So I was surprised and pleased when she absolutely tore it up. Good for her.
I thought she was astonishing in Match Point.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
she starts out seeming like she is going to be the bad guy, and then you see that she is the victim--only a layered performance could create that possibility
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER
And, did you see her on SNL--she has range. She is also 21? That makes it even more impressive--she has a lot of depth for someone that young.
I agree Julia was very good in the role and was the standout. I hadn't known beforehand that this was originally a play, and all the while I watched it, I thought how "playlike" this script is.
She was 15 in Ghost World. FIFTEEN! Anyway, I really don't think her not nailing the character in Match Point was her fault (though ultimately I think she did and her incendiary performance was all that kept me in my seat), I honestly think Woody Allen didn't have a clue how to write or direct her character.
Like with all the arts, opinions are subjective. There are no facts, just the differences in how we perceive the work. That's why we can have discussions on art. I'm also always willing to participate. Now how about Thora Birch?
FINALLY saw this movie and ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! definitely my favorite film from last year. and huffman's is easily my favorite film performance from last year. i'll be watching this film MANY more times in the future
I agree. Huffman should have won. Putting this performance against Reese in WTL? She schools her. No contest in my opinion.
And Fionnula Flanigan should have been given at least a Best Supporting Actress nomination. She is BRILLIANT.
