I read on a website that 10% of what Stephanie Meyer earns from the twilight series goes to the mormon church. Didn't they support prop 8. Hmm if this is true, I don't think I will be buyin anything twilight anymore.

This just occurred to you now?
It's just more fuel to the fire of hate and contempt I have for this series and its author. Meyer makes Steve King look like Joyce and Shakespeare combined. Her homophobia is so transparent... can't wait til R-Pat comes out after the movies are all in the can and her head explodes like John Cassevetes in DePalma's THE FURY. Now THAT would be some scary sh*t!
P
This is why the Mormons are totally cool with Vampires and werewolves. If J.K. Rowling gave a portion of her earnings to the Catholic church the Pope would be praising the bravery of Harry Potter.
Stephanie Myers supports hate.
Don't get me wrong. I hate Twilight, and I think the writer is incredibly untalented, and just boring... but must we take everything so seriously? So what if she gives money to the church of the faith she supports... that does not mean she supports every belief they have. Y'all need to cool down and just hate the series for its awful writing and bad acting, rather than the donations given to the writer of the novels.
I agree with zoraksferal. Now, I am not saying that banning same sex marriage is a good thing or anything like that. However, I can't tell you the number of times that I have seen a priest on TV talking about how the hardcore Christians are wrong for thinking that homosexuality is an abomination etc only to have someone debating the other side till they are blue in the face.
While I am an atheist, I do believe that someone can be part of a religion without believing in all of what it has to say. So, I think that it is jumping the gun a bit much to say that because Mayer is a Mormon she is a homophobe.
Meyer, not Mayer or Meyers, IS a homophone. That's not an opinion, it's a fact. She's also a hetero-phobe as far as non-Mormons are concerned... do you even know what the books are about?
P
Umm... sexy, yet non threatening vampires, and an unnecessary love triangle with a sexy, yet equally unthreatening werewolf?
No I do know what the books are about ( I do, I honest to god wish I didn't.) But, I can't tell you the number of times I have heard people who are either homosexual or in favor of homosexual rights get all up in arms (and rightly so, mind you) that people think that just because they are part of a particular religious group that it automatically equates them with following all their teachings down to a T.
With that said, it is a ridiculous comment to say that just because she is a Mormon and that the Mormon Church has taken a stance on the issue of homosexual rights. That she, being part of that church automatically believes that which they believe.
Yeah, I don't see where you are going with the "Do you even know what the books are about?" thing. Nothing in it is homophobic or heterophobic.
This is a little random, but I was looking at a picture of her, and she has those Andrew Lloyd Webber eyebrows.
How could someone who writes such blatantly gay vampires be a homophobe?
Bottom line is, if she gives portions of her proceeds to her religion which supports banning gays from marrying, it IS A PROBLEM! Anyone who can not see that is just dumb.
"So what if she gives money to the church of the faith she supports... that does not mean she supports every belief they have"
Um, then why give money to a group you disagree with? Are you serious? If she says she is not homophobic than why is she giving her money to the Mormons who have made it clear they hate gay people? People give money to Democrats and Republicans because they agree with a political ideology. SO, I am left to assume Stephanie Myer MUST not be cool with gay people.I mean, what else can I believe? It's like saying I gave money to Bush,McCain, and Reagan but don't you dare call me a Republican! Actions speak louder than words and her donations to this hate group, er I mean the Mormons speaks volumes as far as I am concerned.

Vampires just ick me out. I spend my life worried about the transmission of blood and its consequences. I don't need to watch a bunch of Mormon vampires for that.
The Catholic church thinks it's okay to be gay as long as you aren't having any kind of sex. Anne Rice found God again and donates HUGE portions of her income to the church yet her work was some of the most homoerotic mainstream fiction out there. Now she only writes about the life of Christ. She is also a big supporter of gay rights, particularly marriage equality.
I don't know anything about Stephanie Meyer beyond the fact that she writes ridiculous books that are way too easy to read. She may be a huge homophobe. I haven't a clue. I am just saying that people DO donate huge sums of money to churches with whom they may not agree on everything. The bible says one should tithe 10% of your income back to the church. She's Mormon. Should she donate to the Unitarian church?
Meyer, not Mayer or Meyers, IS a homophone.
I wish SO MUCH that you did that on purpose. Alas, I cannot believe that you did.
This is excellent news b/c I so needed another reason to hate Twilight.
JerseyGirl2, I agree with you. I also know a couple of people who are Catholic who don't agree with the church's views on homosexuality yet still believe in supporting the church and do so whenever they can. They look at it with the realization that the good outweighs the bad.
I won't give her a single penny and any time I hear someone say "I want to read Twilight" I suggest they go pick up the House of Night series by PC & Kristin Cast. Better written and you money isn't going to end up in the hands of the Mormon church.
But JG2, the point isn't whether or not she's a homophobe. Her personal beliefs might be interesting, but the real issue is that by buying Twilight-related merchandise that she benefits from financially, people are essentially donating part of that money directly to the Mormon church and helping them continue to work against gay rights all across the country.
Doesn't Anne Rice have a gay son? If she donates money to her church, that's fine. I'm not saying all churches are anti gay. Maybe her church supports homosexuality? In my opinion, I think Gene Robinson is more of a Christian than that Pope the Catholics have. So, it really depends on the church. The Mormons and the Catholics are two anti gay organizations that happen to be religions. They really are not that different than Westboro Baptist Church. Only difference is they are a tad more settle.
Anne is very very Catholic.
And of course, I get the point, Scott. I am just saying that there are lots of people who donate to churches who believe weird things. Look at the number of celebs who are Scientologists where being gay means you are a lesser being. They give MASSIVE amounts of money to that church. Sure, they aren't actively fighting our rights, but they are actively trying to "cure" people. (Bernadette Peters will not comment on the rumor that she is a Scientologist.) Do we boycott everything they participate in?

So by this logic people shouldn't hire Mormon's because some of the money they pay them will go to the Mormon church? I see what the original poster is saying, but I think when you look at the bigger picture it makes them look like a ridiculous bigot.
Face it some of your money might eventually end up going to the Mormon church, or any other church, or any other organization. I'm sure if the Mormon church came out and said that Mormon's shouldn't patronize any business that is owned by or has hired a homosexual because some fraction of a fraction of the money might go and support the next gay marriage fight, then you would be in and uproar burning them in effigy. Even though they are just following the logic presented here.

And it's better to disallow them the rights of every other American citizen through coercion and hate-speak? Really? Really??
