I blame Brett Ratner for this. I wonder if they even bothered asking Billy Crystal who just last month expressed interest in returning as host.

I don't think he would be bad for the same reasons Jordan gives. However, I would be more open to this if Billy Crystal had already turned it down. Billy showed an interest and Brett is producing the Oscars. Its clearly obvious he is friends with Eddie and doing this for him. Plus having Eddie host would help promote his film TOWER HEIST which comes out in November. I doubt he is breaking any rules but Ratner having one of the stars of his film hosting the Oscars sounds a little shady to me.Like I said,I wonder if Billy at this point is even being considered. I mean, what if he says yes? I can also think of other people who I'd rather see host. Ellen Degeneres. Kathy Griffin. Whoopi Goldberg.Neil Patrick Harris.

After hearing Billy bring up the subject I am assuming he is interested.

Actually, I'd love to see David Letterman do it again. Hell, I'd rather see NPH than Eddie. How about Ricky Gervais?(or maybe we should keep him doing the Golden Globes)Bottom line is, Eddie Murphy is not a horrible choice but I would consider a few others before putting him on the short list. Other people I've read who have been considered is Tina Fey,Jerry Seinfeld, and perhaps the most unusual,Larry David.

I just hope if word gets out people will push for Billy Crystal to do it even more. Billy really is,in my opinion, the perfect host.

Why would the Razzie Awards Worst Actor of the Decade host a ceremony that celebrates the best in cinema?

And then, there's my other idea. Have the ensemble of Saturday Night Live co-host (or alternatively a "best-of" cast of SNL). SNL famously parodies the entertainment industry. I think it would be a great way to provide entertainment throughout the evening by having SNL parody the nominated (and not-nominated) films of 2011 throughout the evening.

Jack Nicholson missed the show when The Hurt Locker won. The telecast really (I mean really) tried to make George Clooney the 'Jack' of the night constantly cutting right over to him. Not really the smartest idea when he is there for a film that got shut out for the night.

I loathe when they transpose the host right in the middle of the Oscars. CapnHook, I really wouldn't say SNL masters with parody under Seth Meyers as head writer. Hosting fake talk shows, yeah sure, but parody is just not their bread and butter. I cannot imagine even under Brett Ratner that The Lonely Island or something like that would be welcomed at the Oscars.

I really liked the first time Jon Stewart hosted. It actually felt like he had his own writers working and had enough self-awareness to snark on the telecast (like the montage for all the montages that night line) when necessary. The second time was far less memorable but I would welcome him again. The Conan I would want at the Oscars would be even more inappropriately for the Oscars. Jon provides better balance. The only long-time host I wouldn't mind is Steve Martin (as long as he keeps the banjo aside).

I will throw out a name for the sake of it. Robert Downey Jr. Funny, self-deprecating, a past nominee, and will get people watching. Plus he can carry a tune so a musical number is not out of the question.

Sometimes when I walk down the street I step into crap. I suppose I could just say "Screw it!" and make it a point to step into every pile of crap I see until I'm completely covered in crap.

However, my initial reaction is to grab a stick and scrape the crap off my shoe. If I succeed, I will eventually forget that my shoe had crap on it and my shoe will be back to it's good old self.

That's why.

It's nice to see that after being away for a few years I come back and CapnHook's justification of things still makes less sense to me than Advanced Calculus.

This is a discussion forum. The key word being discussion. Obviously we have no power to change anything with the way the Academy Awards telecast is going to be produced, to make that point is unnecessary. Just as you shared your ideas about hosts and SNL I shared mine and why I don't think the SNL plan would be good or feasible in any way.

Just because something is has been declining doesn't mean that my opinions on what I'd like to see happen have to be formed based on the rules of the decline.

I agree with you that Brett Ratner/Eddie Murphy etc doesn't indicate that they are in anyway interested in taking the Academy Awards back to the class and spectacle that it once way.

I also think Ratner will likely do something similar to what you suggested except it's likely to be far worse. I'm picturing parodies of the Best Picture nominees with Jackie Chan doing a kung fu move and then mispronouncing something in English leading the forced guffaws of the thousands in attendance.

Who knows? Maybe it'll be enough to make Tom Sherak find a stick and start scraping from the bottom of Oscar's shiny gold shoe.

Did not intend to shoot down your opinion. Upon initial reading, I took your comments as insinuating I wanted the Oscars to go into the MTV direction.

My SNL suggestion is only based on the reasoning that the producers are headed towards that route. (Which, I think can be more successful than a half-attempt at MTV and a half-attempt at class. Middle of the road hasn't worked yet.)
